Remnants of the Fermi surface in the Wigner electron crystal phase of a strongly interacting one-dimensional system

Abstract

Abstract The work of Ovchinnikov and Zabrodin is used to study the non-analytic behaviour in the electronic momentum distribution in the Wigner crystalline phase. For a jellium, a comparison is made with our earlier three-dimensional study of the electronic pair function and the momentum distribution.

The momentum distribution function of a Luttinger liquid

P. J. Monisha, Soma Mukhopadhyay, Ashok Chatterjee

The momentum distribution function of a one-dimensional interacting many electron-phonon system is calculated analytically within the framework of the Luttinger model. We have shown that, even a small electron-electron interaction destroys the fermi surface and in the presence of the electron-phonon interaction the residual fermi surface vanishes completely and the function becomes a continuous function of the wave vector as we increase the coupling strength. It shows that in one dimension, the Fermi liquid theory breaks down completely, if we include the electron-phonon interactions along with the electron-electron interaction.

Peculiarities of the momentum distribution functions of strongly correlated charged fermions

Alexander S. Larkin, Vladimir S. Filinov, В. Е. Фортов

Abstract New numerical version of the Wigner approach to quantum thermodynamics of strongly coupled systems of particles has been developed for extreme conditions, when analytical approximations based on different kinds of perturbation theories cannot be applied. An explicit analytical expression of the Wigner function has been obtained in linear and harmonic approximations. Fermi statistical effects are accounted for by effective pair pseudopotential depending on coordinates, momenta and degeneracy parameter of particles and taking into account Pauli blocking of fermions. A new quantum Monte-Carlo method for calculations of average values of arbitrary quantum operators has been developed. Calculations of the momentum distribution functions and the pair correlation functions of degenerate ideal Fermi gas have been carried out for testing the developed approach. Comparison of the obtained momentum distribution functions of strongly correlated Coulomb systems with the Maxwell–Boltzmann and the Fermi distributions shows the significant influence of interparticle interaction both at small momenta and in high energy quantum ‘tails’.

Form of first-order density matrix for jellium near to the diagonal

Norman Henry March

Kimball's work (1975) on the momentum distribution of electrons is utilized to establish the form of the expansion of the first-order density matrix for jellium around the diagonal. There is non-analytic behaviour and the connection between the present result and the analytic form for non-interacting electrons in established.

Deformed Wigner crystal in a one-dimensional quantum dot

Yasha Gindikin, Vladimir A. Sablikov

The spatial Fourier spectrum of the electron density distribution in a finite one-dimensional system and the distribution function of electrons over single-particle states are studied in detail to show that there are two universal features in their behavior, which characterize the electron ordering and the deformation of Wigner crystal by boundaries. The distribution function has a $\ensuremath{\delta}$-like singularity at the Fermi momentum ${k}_{F}$. The Fourier spectrum of the density has a steplike form at the wave vector $2{k}_{F}$, with the harmonics being absent or vanishing above this threshold. These features are found by calculations using exact diagonalization method. They are shown to be caused by Wigner ordering of electrons, affected by the boundaries. However, the common Luttinger liquid model with open boundaries fails to capture these features because it overestimates the deformation of the Wigner crystal. An improvement of the Luttinger liquid model is proposed, which allows one to describe the above features correctly. It is based on the corrected form of the density operator conserving the particle number.

Phase Space Path Integral Representation for Wigner Function

Alexander S. Larkin, Vladimir S. Filinov

Quantum interference and exchange statistical effects can affect the momentum distribution functions making them non-Maxwellian.Such effects may be important in studies of kinetic properties of matter at low temperatures and under extreme conditions. In this work we have generalized the path integral representation for Wigner function to strongly coupled three-dimensional quantum system of particles with Boltzmann and Fermi statistics. In suggested approach the explicit expression for Wigner function was obtained in harmonic approximation and Monte Carlo method allowing numerical calculation of Wigner function, distribution functions and average quantum values has been developed. As alternative more accurate single-momentum approach and related Monte Carlo method have been developed to calculation of the distribution functions of degenerate system of interacting fermions. It allows partially overcoming the well-known sign problem for degenerate Fermi systems.
