Abstract

Quantum interference and exchange statistical effects can affect the momentum distribution functions making them non-Maxwellian.Such effects may be important in studies of kinetic properties of matter at low temperatures and under extreme conditions. In this work we have generalized the path integral representation for Wigner function to strongly coupled three-dimensional quantum system of particles with Boltzmann and Fermi statistics. In suggested approach the explicit expression for Wigner function was obtained in harmonic approximation and Monte Carlo method allowing numerical calculation of Wigner function, distribution functions and average quantum values has been developed. As alternative more accurate single-momentum approach and related Monte Carlo method have been developed to calculation of the distribution functions of degenerate system of interacting fermions. It allows partially overcoming the well-known sign problem for degenerate Fermi systems.

Solution of the 'sign problem' in pair approximation

Alexander S. Larkin, Vladimir S. Filinov, Vladimir E. Fortov

The main difficulty for path integral Monte Carlo studies of Fermi systems results from the requirement of antisymmetrization of the density matrix and is known in literature as the 'sign problem'. To overcome this issue the new numerical version of the %{\large {\tiny {\Huge }}} Wigner approach to quantum mechanics for treatment thermodynamic properties of degenerate systems of fermions has been developed. The new path integral representation of quantum Wigner function in the phase space has been obtained for canonical ensemble. Explicit analytical expression of the Wigner function accounting for Fermi statistical effects by effective pair pseudopotential has been proposed. Derived pseudopotential depends on coordinates, momenta and degeneracy parameter of fermions and takes into account Pauli blocking of fermions in phase space. The new quantum Monte-Carlo method for calculations of average values of arbitrary quantum operators has been proposed. To test the developed approach calculations of the momentum distribution function of the degenerate ideal system of Fermi particles has been carried out in a good agreement with analytical Fermi distributions. Generalization of this approach for studies influence of interparticle interaction on momentum distribution functions of strongly coupled Fermi system is in progress.

Momentum distribution functions of strongly correlated systems of particles: Wigner approach and path integrals

Alexander S. Larkin, Vladimir S. Filinov, В. Е. Фортов

The new numerical version of the Wigner approach to quantum mechanics for treatment thermodynamic properties of the strongly interacting systems of particles has been developed for extreme conditions, when there are no small physical parameters and analytical approximations used in different kind of perturbation theories can not be applied. The new path integral representation of the quantum Wigner function in the phase space has been developed for canonical ensemble. Explicit analytical expression of the Wigner function has been obtained in linear and harmonic approximations. The new quantum Monte-Carlo method for calculations of average values of arbitrary quantum operators has been proposed. Preliminary calculations of the momentum distribution function of the Coulomb systems of particles have been carried out. Comparison with classical Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution shows the significant influence of quantum effects on the high energy asymptotics ("tails') of the calculated momentum distribution functions, which resulted in appearance of sharp oscillations.

Path Integral Representation of the Wigner Function in Canonical Ensemble

Alexander S. Larkin, Vladimir S. Filinov, В. Е. Фортов

Abstract Quantum effects can affect the shape of the particle kinetic energy distribution function, as the interaction of a particle with its surroundings restricts the volume of configuration space, which, due to the uncertainty relation, results in an increase in the volume of the momentum space, i.e., in a rise in the fraction of particles with higher momenta. Allowing for quantum effects at calculations of the equilibrium rate constants of inelastic processes is important in consideration of such phenomena as the transition of combustion into detonation, flame propagation, vibrational relaxation, and even thermonuclear fusion at high pressure and low temperatures. Quantum effects are also important in treatment of transport properties of the strongly interacting systems of many particles. In this work the new path integral representation of the quantum Wigner function in the phase space has been developed for canonical ensemble. Explicit analytical expression of the Wigner function has been obtained in harmonic approximation. New quantum Monte‐Carlo method for ab initio calculations of the average values of quantum operators, Wigner function, momentum and position distributions and wave functions of the ground state has been developed and tested. Obtained results are in a very good agreement with available analytical results and results of usual path‐integral Monte‐Carlo method. The developed approach allows simulation of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of quantum systems and calculation average values of quantum operators, when the usual path integral Monte Carlo methods in configurational space failed. Peculiarities of the momentum distribution functions of strongly correlated charged fermions

Alexander S. Larkin, Vladimir S. Filinov, В. Е. Фортов

Abstract New numerical version of the Wigner approach to quantum thermodynamics of strongly coupled systems of particles has been developed for extreme conditions, when analytical approximations based on different kinds of perturbation theories cannot be applied. An explicit analytical expression of the Wigner function has been obtained in linear and harmonic approximations. Fermi statistical effects are accounted for by effective pair pseudopotential depending on coordinates, momenta and degeneracy parameter of particles and taking into account Pauli blocking of fermions. A new quantum Monte-Carlo method for calculations of average values of arbitrary quantum operators has been developed. Calculations of the momentum distribution functions and the pair correlation functions of degenerate ideal Fermi gas have been carried out for testing the developed approach. Comparison of the obtained momentum distribution functions of strongly correlated Coulomb systems with the Maxwell–Boltzmann and the Fermi distributions shows the significant influence of interparticle interaction both at small momenta and in high energy quantum ‘tails’.

Phase-space path-integral representation of the quantum density of states: Monte Carlo simulation of strongly correlated soft-sphere fermions

Vladimir S. Filinov, Pavel R. Levashov, Alexander S. Larkin

The Wigner formulation of quantum mechanics is used to derive a path-integral representation of the quantum density of states (DOS) of strongly correlated fermions in the canonical ensemble. A path-integral Monte Carlo approach for the simulation of DOS and other thermodynamic functions is suggested. The derived Wigner function in the phase space resembles the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution but allows for quantum effects. We consider a three-dimensional quantum system of strongly correlated soft-sphere fermions at different densities and temperatures. The calculated properties include the DOS, momentum distribution functions, spin-resolved radial distribution functions, potentials of mean force, and related energy levels obtained from the Bohr-Sommerfeld condition. We observe sharp peaks on DOS and momentum distribution curves, which are explained by the appearance of fermionic bound states.

Sign problems in path integral formulations of quantum mechanics and quantum statistics

Vladimir S. Filinov, Alexander S. Larkin

Nowadays the term 'sign problem' is used to identify two different problems. The ideas to overcome the first type of the 'sign problem' of strongly oscillating complex valued imtegrand in the Feynman path integrals comes from Picard-Lefschetz theory and a complex version of Morse theory. The main idea is to select Lefschetz thimbles as the cycle approaching the critical point at the path-integration, where the imaginary part of the complex action stays constant. Since the imaginary part of the action is constant on each thimble, the sign problem disappears and the integral can be calculated much more effectively. Here based on the Metropolis -- Hastings algorithm a new method of calculations of the integral of the strongly oscillating integrands has been prosed. Some simple test calculation and comparison with available analytical results have been carried out. The second type of the 'sign problem' arises at studies Fermi systems by path integral approach and is caused by the requirement of antisymmetrization of the real valued matrix elements of the density matrix. An explicit analytical expression for effective pair pseudopotential in phase space has been discussed in Wigner formulation of quantum mechanics. Obtained pseudopotential allow to account for Fermi statistical effects as realizes the Pauli blocking of fermions due to the repulsion between identical fermions, which prevents their occupation of same phase space cell. To test this approach, calculations of the momentum distribution function of the ideal system of Fermi particles have been presented over a wide range of momentum and degeneracy parameter.
