Abstract

Abstract Analytical and numerical calculations of limiting characteristics of electromagnetic radiation detectors based on Josephson junctions are carried out. Josephson junctions are described by a simple resistively shunted model and their Josephson energy is considered to be comparable to the energy of thermal fluctuations. The operation modes of such junctions as a classical detector using ac rectification on a static nonlinear current–voltage characteristic are established. The results of numerical and analytical calculations are compared, and it is shown that the classical detection mode can be analyzed and optimized using the derived analytical expressions for the main limiting characteristics. The study demonstrates the possibility of achieving a limiting sensitivity up to 2 × 10–15 W/Hz1/2, a dynamic power range of 105–106, and a spectral range up to 1.4 THz, in a temperature range 50–77 K using new Josephson thin-film junctions consisting of high-temperature YBa2Cu3O7 – x superconductors with mutually tilted c axes.

Wideband detection of electromagnetic signals by high-Tc Josephson junctions with comparable Josephson and thermal energies

Valery V. Pavlovskiy, I. Gundareva, O. Yu. Volkov +1 more

Detection mechanisms in Josephson junctions with energies Ej comparable to thermal energies kT have been studied. The responses ΔV of YBa2Cu3O7−x bicrystal junctions to monochromatic radiation with frequencies f ranging from 94 GHz to 3.1 THz can be described in terms of classical rectification on a static nonlinear V–I curve at low frequencies and frequency modulation of the ac Josephson current at high frequencies, with an interplay between these mechanisms at intermediate frequencies. An electrical noise-equivalent power of (9 ± 3) × 10−15 W/Hz1/2, a responsivity of (3.4 ± 0.5) × 105 V/W, and a dynamic power range of 5 × 104 have been demonstrated for the square-law classical detection of 94 GHz radiation with the junctions at 50 K. The effect of background radiation on the V–I curves of YBa2Cu3O7−x bicrystal junctions was found to have an optical noise-equivalent temperature of ≤30 mK/Hz1/2. The main contribution to the effect comes from the interplay between the classical and Josephson detection mechanisms. The spectral and power dependencies of the responses ΔV of Josephson junctions have been numerically simulated within the resistively shunted junction model at various values of kT/Ej, and the results are in acceptable agreement with the experimental data.

Influence of YBaCuO Josephson Junction Parameters on the Characteristics of a Broadband Detector

Ekaterina A. Matrozova, Alexey E. Parafin, Dmitry V. Masterov +2 more

For Josephson bicrystal YBaCuO junctions 3-1.5 $\mu$m in size, the response to an external signal was measured. Receivers with similar $I_{c}R_{N}$ values at helium temperatures and different RNvalues were considered. The amplitudes of the Shapiro steps were measured for various external signal powers. The dependence of the output voltage noise on structure temperature was measured. It is shown that fluctuations of the critical current have the greatest influence on the output noise of the receiver. The volt-watt sensitivity and noise-equivalent power were evaluated for a 165 GHz external signal. Broadband classical detection of THz radiation by a YBaCuO Josephson junction (JJ) was studied based on resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson Junction model. Optimal temperature operating ranges for the use of each structure were shown.

Detection of THz radiation by YBa2Cu3O7-xJosephson bicrystal junctions with high characteristic voltages IcRnup to 8 mV has been studied. The high-resistance junctions have demonstrated a classical detection of radiation with frequencies up to terahertz range. It was shown by numerical simulations, that the values of noise equivalent power NEP-15W/Hz1/2can be reached at the frequencies up to 1.5 THz at junction temperature of 30 K.

Frequency conversion in Josephson junctions with comparable intrinsic and thermal energies

A. V. Snezhko, Yu. Ya. Divin

We have studied Josephson junctions with intrinsic energy ħIc/2e (Ic being the critical current) comparable to thermal energy kT and examined their potential for electromagnetic signal conversion. In this case, moderate thermal fluctuations are sufficient to destroy Josephson oscillations but do not entirely suppress the Josephson dynamics. We have numerically calculated the DC I–V curves, their derivatives dnV/dIn, and the DC and harmonic voltage responses Vn of such Josephson junctions to the AC currents Iωsinωt. We have found that Josephson junction with γ = 2ekT/ħIc ≥ 0.5 is a nonlinear resistance at frequencies ω below characteristic Josephson frequency ωc = 2eIcRn/ħ and all current biases I0. Frequency conversion in such junctions occurs due to the classical mechanism on the nonlinearity of the DC I–V characteristics at low signal frequencies. With increasing the signal frequencies to the characteristic Josephson frequency ωc = 2eIcRn/ħ and higher, the Josephson mechanism by frequency modulation of the Josephson current gradually replaces the classical one. The classical conversion mechanism demonstrates higher conversion efficiencies than the Josephson mechanism, although it operates within a narrower bandwidth. At zero DC bias i0 and in the range of γ-values from 0.1 to 2, we have found odd harmonics Vn emerging from low signal currents. Zero-bias values of the third harmonic V3 maximize at 0.18IcRn for JJs with γ = 0.5 and Iω = 2.5Ic. Based on these findings and high-Tc Josephson junctions, a family of low-noise square-law detectors, harmonic multipliers, and linear heterodyne receivers can be developed for emerging terahertz applications.

Dynamic properties of high-Tc superconducting nano-junctions made with a focused helium ion beam

F. Couëdo, P. Amari, C. Feuillet-Palma +5 more

Abstract The Josephson junction (JJ) is the corner stone of superconducting electronics and quantum information processing. While the technology for fabricating low T c JJ is mature and delivers quantum circuits able to reach the “quantum supremacy”, the fabrication of reproducible and low-noise high- T c JJ is still a challenge to be taken up. Here we report on noise properties at RF frequencies of recently introduced high- T c Josephson nano-junctions fabricated by mean of a Helium ion beam focused at sub-nanometer scale on a YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 thin film. We show that their current-voltage characteristics follow the standard Resistively-Shunted-Junction (RSJ) circuit model, and that their characteristic frequency f c = (2 e / h ) I c R n reaches ~300 GHz at low temperature. Using the “detector response” method, we evidence that the Josephson oscillation linewidth is only limited by the thermal noise in the RSJ model for temperature ranging from T ~ 20 K to 75 K. At lower temperature and for the highest He irradiation dose, the shot noise contribution must also be taken into account when approaching the tunneling regime. We conclude that these Josephson nano-junctions present the lowest noise level possible, which makes them very promising for future applications in the microwave and terahertz regimes.

Effect of Electromagnetic Radiation on Nonideal Josephson Junctions

Alexander N. Lykov, I. A. Lykov

Abstract The method of numerical solution of equations is used within the resistive model to study the behavior of deviations of the current‒voltage characteristics of nonideal Josephson junctions from similar characteristics of ideal (standard) junctions. Nonideal Josephson junctions are those in which the current‒phase relation contains additional Josephson harmonics. The dependences of the amplitudes of current steps (Shapiro steps) on the power of external electromagnetic radiation is calculated. The shape of these dependences is shown to deviate from the corresponding dependences for ideal Josephson junctions. In addition, the paper examines the features of the occurrence of additional current steps on the current‒voltage characteristics of Josephson junctions and shows a possibility of their absence in the case of the presence of additional harmonics in the current‒phase relation. The obtained results prove that by analyzing the step structure of the current‒voltage characteristics it is possible to obtain information about the properties of Josephson junctions and superconductors that form them.
