Abstract

We have carried out concurrent optical frequency measurements of the $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{1}$ ($F=\frac{3}{2}$) and $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{0}$ transitions in $^{171}$Yb, and in so doing have determined the frequency separation between the $^{3}P_{0}$ ($F=\frac{1}{2}$) and $^{3}P_{1}$ ($F=\frac{3}{2}$) levels with an uncertainty in the ppb range. The knowledge of this frequency interval will aid experiments relying on the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}$ line in $^{171}$Yb and $^{173}$Yb without access to highly accurate frequency standards.

Lifetime and oscillator-strength studies involving the (6s6p )3 P1 -(6s7s )1 S0 transition of atomic Yb

Yu Bai, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

The oscillator strength of the (6s6p${)\mathrm{}}^{3}$${P}_{1}$-(6s7s${)\mathrm{}}^{1}$${S}_{0}$ transition and the lifetime of the (6s7s${)\mathrm{}}^{1}$${S}_{0}$ state in $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$ have been measured to be (8.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$ and 45.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0 nsec, respectively. The former value was obtained by use of coherent optical techniques (optical nutation and ac Stark splitting), while the latter was obtained by monitoring cascade fluorescence following pulsed excitation.

Hyperfine constants and line separations for the S01−P13 intercombination line in neutral ytterbium with sub-Doppler resolution

Peggy E. Atkinson, J. Schelfhout, John J. McFerran

Optical frequency measurements of the intercombination line $(6{s}^{2})\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{-}(6s6p)\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}^{3}P_{1}$ in the isotopes of ytterbium are carried out with the use of sub-Doppler fluorescence spectroscopy on an atomic beam. A dispersive signal is generated to which a master laser is locked, while frequency counting of an auxiliary beat signal is performed via a frequency comb referenced to a hydrogen maser. The relative separations between the lines are used to evaluate the $^{3}P_{1}$-level magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole constants for the fermionic isotopes. The center of gravity for the $^{3}P_{1}$ levels in $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}$ and $^{173}\mathrm{Yb}$ are also evaluated, where we find significant disagreement with previously reported values. These hyperfine constants provide a valuable testbed for atomic many-body computations in ytterbium.

Observation of the $4f^{14}6s^{2}~^1S_0- 4f^{13}5d6s^{2}(J=2)$ clock transition at 431 nm in $^{171}$Yb

Akio Kawasaki, Takumi Kobayashi, Akiko Nishiyama +2 more

We report on the observation of the $4f^{14}6s^{2}~^1S_0- 4f^{13}5d6s^{2}(J=2)$ transition at 431 nm in $^{171}$Yb by depleting atoms in a magneto-optical trap formed by the $6s^{2}~^1S_0-6s6p~^3P_1$ intercombination transition. The absolute frequency of the transition to the $F=3/2$ state is determined to be $695~171~054~858.1(8.2)$~kHz against physical realization of Coordinated Universal Time maintained by the National Metrology Institute of Japan with a frequency comb. The $g$ factor of the transition to the $F=3/2$ state and the A hyperfine constant are measured to be $g_J=1.54(13)$ and 1123.354(13)~MHz, respectively. More precise spectroscopy of this transition can lead to searches for time variation of the fine structure constant and searches for new physics with isotope shift measurements.

Laser cooling of Y173b for isotope separation and precision hyperfine spectroscopy

Dipankar Das, Vasant Natarajan A

The hyperfine transitions in the 399 nm ${^{1}S}_{0}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}{^{1}P}_{1}$ line in $^{173}\text{Y}\text{b}$ overlap with the transition in $^{172}\text{Y}\text{b}$. We use transverse laser cooling on this line to selectively deflect $^{173}\text{Y}\text{b}$ atoms from a thermal beam containing both isotopes. We then use an acousto-optic modulator to span the frequency difference between the hyperfine transitions, and hence measure hyperfine structure in the ${^{1}P}_{1}$ state. Our precise values for the hyperfine constants, ${A}_{173}=57.693\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.006\text{ }\text{MHz}$ and ${B}_{173}=609.028\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.056\text{ }\text{MHz}$, improve previous values significantly.
