Abstract

The oscillator strength of the (6s6p${)\mathrm{}}^{3}$${P}_{1}$-(6s7s${)\mathrm{}}^{1}$${S}_{0}$ transition and the lifetime of the (6s7s${)\mathrm{}}^{1}$${S}_{0}$ state in $^{174}\mathrm{Yb}$ have been measured to be (8.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}4}$ and 45.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0 nsec, respectively. The former value was obtained by use of coherent optical techniques (optical nutation and ac Stark splitting), while the latter was obtained by monitoring cascade fluorescence following pulsed excitation.

Measurement of the P13 lifetime in Sr

Mark D. Havey, L. C. Balling, J. J. Wright

The lifetime of the $^{3}P_{1}$ state of Sr has been measured by observing the intensity of the $5{s}^{2}^{1}S_{0}\ensuremath{\leftrightarrow}5s5p^{3}P_{1}$ fluorescence as a function of time, following the excitation of the $^{3}P_{1}$ state by a 1-\ensuremath{\mu}sec pulse from a flashlamppumped dye laser. The measured value of the $^{3}P_{1}$ lifetime is 21 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 1 \ensuremath{\mu}sec.

Stark-shift measurement of the (6s )2 1 S0 →(6s6p )1 P1 barium transition

Junlei Li, William Arie van Wijngaarden

The Stark shift of the (6s${)}^{2}$ $^{1}$${\mathit{S}}_{0}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(6s6p${)}^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ transition in barium was measured using a laser to excite an atomic beam as it traversed a uniform electric field and a field-free region. The laser frequency was scanned across the transition while fluorescence produced by the radiative decay of the excited state was detected. The frequency scan was calibrated using an acousto-optic modulator which frequency shifted the laser by a specified amount. The Stark-shift rate was found to be -28.532\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.060 kHz/(kV/cm${)}^{2}$. The hyperfine splitting of the $^{135,137}\mathrm{Ba}$ F=1/2 level relative to $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ of the (6s6p${)}^{1}$${\mathit{P}}_{1}$ state was determined to be -549.47\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.12 MHz, where the minus sign indicates that the $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}$ transition is at a lower frequency.

Oscillator strength measurements of the 5s6s S10→5snp P11 Rydberg transitions of strontium

Sami Ul Haq, Mazhar Ali Kalyar, M. Rafiq +3 more

We report the experimentally determined oscillator strengths for the $5s6s$ ${^{1}S}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5snp$ ${^{1}P}_{1}$ Rydberg transitions of strontium using two-step excitation in conjunction with a thermionic diode ion detector. The absolute photoionization cross section from the $5s6s$ ${^{1}S}_{0}$ excited state has been determined by adjusting the polarization vector of the ionizing laser beam parallel, perpendicular, and at the magic angle with respect to that of the exciting dye laser. The measured absolute value of the photoionization cross section $0.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2\text{ }\text{Mb}$ at the $5s$ threshold is used to extract the $f$ values of the $5s6s$ ${^{1}S}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}5snp$ ${^{1}P}_{1}$ $(26\ensuremath{\le}n\ensuremath{\le}73)$ Rydberg transitions. The oscillator strength in the discrete region merges smoothly to the oscillator strength density at the ionization threshold.

Lifetimes, Oscillator Strengths, and Coherence Narrowing of the (6p8s)P103 and (6p7s)P101 States of Pb208

Ahmed Baghdadi, Joshua B. Halpern, E. B. Saloman

The lifetimes, oscillator strengths, and coherence narrowing of the $(6p8s)^{3}P_{1}^{0}$ and $(6p7s)^{1}P_{1}^{0}$ states of ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{208}$ were measured in this work by zero-field level-crossing spectroscopy. For the $(6p8s)^{3}P_{1}^{0}$ state the lifetime $\ensuremath{\tau}=1.26(5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}8}$ sec and the absorption oscillator strength for the 2053-\AA{} transition to the ground state was 0.041(8). For the $(6p7s)^{1}P_{1}^{0}$ state, $\ensuremath{\tau}=4.8(3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$ sec, and the absorption oscillator strength for the 2022-\AA{} transition to the ground state was 0.020(12).

Lifetime, Coherence Narrowing, and Hyperfine Structure of the (6s26p7s) P1∘3 State in Lead

E. B. Saloman, W. Happer

The lifetime and hyperfine structure of the $(6{s}^{2}6p7s) ^{3}{P}_{1}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ excited state in lead have been investigated by the technique of level-crossing spectroscopy. The lifetime of the state was determined to be $\ensuremath{\tau}=5.75(20)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$ sec. The linewidth of the level-crossing signal was observed to saturate at a "coherence-narrowed" value in agreement with theoretical predictions. The magnitude of this narrowing corresponds to a 27(3)% branching ratio to the ground state. When the branching ratio and the lifetime are combined with the $f(3639 \mathrm{\AA{}}):f(4058 \mathrm{\AA{}})$ oscillator-strength ratio measured by Khokhlov, one may infer the absolute $f$ values: $f(2833 \mathrm{\AA{}})=0.169(17)$, $f(3639 \mathrm{\AA{}})=0.040(8)$, $f(4058 \mathrm{\AA{}})=0.155(31)$. The high-field level crossing in the hyperfine structure of the first $^{3}{P}_{1}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ state of ${\mathrm{Pb}}^{207}$ was found to occur at a magnetic field ${H}_{c}=4661.1(4)$ G, which corresponds to a magnetic-dipole-interaction constant $A=8.811(17)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{9}$ cps.

Clock and inter-combination line frequency separation ($^{3}P_{0} -\,^{3}P_{1}$) in $^{171}$Yb

L. Nenadovic, John J. McFerran

We have carried out concurrent optical frequency measurements of the $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{1}$ ($F=\frac{3}{2}$) and $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{0}$ transitions in $^{171}$Yb, and in so doing have determined the frequency separation between the $^{3}P_{0}$ ($F=\frac{1}{2}$) and $^{3}P_{1}$ ($F=\frac{3}{2}$) levels with an uncertainty in the ppb range. The knowledge of this frequency interval will aid experiments relying on the $^{1}S_{0}-\,^{3}P_{0}$ line in $^{171}$Yb and $^{173}$Yb without access to highly accurate frequency standards.
