Abstract

This paper shows coherence control of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and switching of a weak probe field through a five-level atomic medium. On the propagation, the probe field with triple resonance (EIT) converts into double- and single- resonance (EIT) by adjusting relative phase of two strong microwave- and optical- field when they are coupled with the medium cyclically and vice versa. This system becomes independent of the wave-vector mismatch of the strong coupling fields and subsequently of the Doppler effect upon coupling the coherent fields co-linearly. Distinct in aim, we further show dephasing induced switching from the single- through the triple colored destructive interference into the ones of the constructive interference in the absorption spectrum to exhibit, in each case, the statistical behavior of a Lorentzian and vice versa.

Atom-assisted coherent control of multiple-color mechanically induced switching

Fazal Ghafoor, Muhammad Javed Akram, Muhammad Ayaz +2 more

Abstract We show multiple mechanically induced switching of a weak probe field through a system of cavity-optomechanics with a medium of N number of three levels (Λ-type) atoms exhibiting a strong coherent field coupling. Three distinct MIT windows develop for the probe field transmission using optomechanical coupling together with two other coupling parameters related to the two atomic transitions. Adjustment of the relative phase associated with the coupling parameters leads to multiple absorption-induced optical switching. The switching is obtained by closing one through three of the MIT windows for the probe field transmission tuning the relative phase and vice versa. Contrary to the multiple mechanical induced transparency, the optical switching phenomenon is explained regarding constructive quantum interference effect in the system.

Interplay between electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes effect in fivelevel atomic systems

Gul Tiaz, Fazal Ghafoor, R. G. Nazmitdinov +1 more

We analyse the evolution of a weak probe optical field propagation through a five-level atomic medium cyclically driven by two strong optical and microwave fields. It is shown that the competition between the electromagnetically induced transparency and the Autler-Townes effect can be controlled by altering the relative phase of the coupling fields in the presence of the atomic dephasing reservoir.

Multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in a five-level atomic system

The absorption properties in an inverted-tripod scheme atomic system driven by the coherent fields are investigated by means of the semiclassical theory. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the Rabi frequencies of the coherent fields, there appear triple, double, single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT).In the triple EIT,the location of transparent windows can be controlled by adjusting the detunings for the coherent fields, and changes continuously,i.e.there exist a series of continuous frequencies for the probe field propagating in an atomic medium without absorption in a certain range. Finally, the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states.

Phase-dependent atomic coherence and interference in multi-level atomic systems

Jiepeng Zhang, Yifu Zhu

Atomic coherence and interference manifested by electromagentically induced transparency (EIT) and coherent population trapping (CPT) plays an important role in the current studies of atom-photon interactions and has found numerous applications in optical physics. EIT is created in a three-level atomic system by a coupling field and results in destructive interference between two excitation paths of a weak probe laser interacting with the atomic medium. This leads to suppressed linear absorption and rapidly varying atomic dispersion for the probe laser near the atomic resonance, which provides the platform for a variety of applications such as nonlinear optics at low light levels, slow light manipulation, and quantum state engineering for photons and atoms. Here we extend the simple three-level EIT system to more complicated and versatile configurations in a multi-level atomic system coupled by multiple laser fields. We show that with multiple excitation paths provided by different laser fields, phase-dependent quantum interference is induced: either constructive or destructive interference can be realized by varying the relative phases among the laser fields. Two specific examples are discussed. One is a three-level system coupled by bichromatic coupling and probe fields, in which the phase dependent interference between the resonant two-photon Raman transitions can be initiated and controlled. Another is a four-level system coupled by two coupling fields and two probe fields, in which a double-EIT configuration is created by the phase-dependent interference between three-photon and one-photon excitation processes. We analyze the coherently coupled multi-level atomic system and discuss the control parameters for the onset of constructive or destructive quantum interference. We describe two experiments performed with cold Rb atoms that can be approximately treated as the coherently coupled three-level and four-level atomic systems respectively. The experimental results show the phase-dependent quantum coherence and interference in the multi-level Rb atomic system, and agree with the theoretical calculations based on the coherently coupled three-level or four-level model system.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in five-level configurations under Doppler broadening

Ai Nguyen Van, Quynh Anh Thi Nguyen, Quang Hai Ho +9 more

Abstract Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in five-level atomic systems is theoretically investigated for three representative configurations: M-, inverted-Y, and K-type systems driven by a weak probe field and three control laser fields. The different coupling schemes produce different quantum interference pathways and two-photon resonance conditions, leading to markedly different EIT spectra. The M-type configuration exhibits one, two, and three well-resolved transparency windows as successive control fields are introduced. In contrast, the inverted-Y configuration produces broader transparency windows because of the overlap of multiple interference channels, whereas the K-type configuration exhibits only a single EIT window when all control fields are resonant. Multiple transparency windows in the K-type system appear after introducing appropriate coupling-field detunings. Doppler broadening at room temperature significantly broadens the absorption spectrum and reduces the transparency depth, while preserving the number and positions of the EIT windows. These results demonstrate that the coupling scheme plays an important role in determining the formation and evolution of multi-window EIT spectra and identify the characteristics of the three five-level configurations for multi-channel quantum-optical applications, as well as for the experimental observation of EIT spectra in five-level configurations.

Atomic dephasing and coherence controlled tuning of the triple color scattering light using Autler–Townes triplet emission spectroscopy

Gul Tiaz, Ishaq Ahmad, Fazal Ghafoor

Abstract This study shows atomic dephasing and coherence controlled tuning of a triple color scattering light from a four-level atomic system into the ones of single and double color when the system is cyclically coupled with one microwave field and two optical fields. The scattering light with the symmetric double resonance in the latter case tunes into two distinct features of the asymmetric Fano-like resonance using relative phase of the coupling fields and vice versa. The asymmetric resonance, in each case, agrees excellently with the original formulation of Fano (1961 Phys. Rev . 124 1866). The coherence tuning of the resonances, caused by the constructive interference effect in the spectrum, is analyzed analytically. Distinct in the technique, we further show atomic dephasing-induced tuning of the symmetric double and asymmetric single Fano-like resonance into a Lorentzian like statistical behavior. Upon adjusting the relative amplitude of the coupling fields in favor of the resonance tuning, the triple color scattered light is controlled from a sharpened central single and broadened sides double line through central broadened single and sides sharpened double line.
