Abstract

We analyse the evolution of a weak probe optical field propagation through a five-level atomic medium cyclically driven by two strong optical and microwave fields. It is shown that the competition between the electromagnetically induced transparency and the Autler-Townes effect can be controlled by altering the relative phase of the coupling fields in the presence of the atomic dephasing reservoir.

Multiple Color Electromagnetically Induced Switching Using a Five-Level Atomic Medium

Gul Tiaz, E. I. Shahaliev, Muhammad Asif Ashiq +1 more

This paper shows coherence control of multiple electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and switching of a weak probe field through a five-level atomic medium. On the propagation, the probe field with triple resonance (EIT) converts into double- and single- resonance (EIT) by adjusting relative phase of two strong microwave- and optical- field when they are coupled with the medium cyclically and vice versa. This system becomes independent of the wave-vector mismatch of the strong coupling fields and subsequently of the Doppler effect upon coupling the coherent fields co-linearly. Distinct in aim, we further show dephasing induced switching from the single- through the triple colored destructive interference into the ones of the constructive interference in the absorption spectrum to exhibit, in each case, the statistical behavior of a Lorentzian and vice versa.

Observation of Autler-Townes Effect in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Du Zhi-Jing, Shougang Zhang, Wu Chang-Jiang +3 more

We report an experimental observation of Autler-Townes doublet splitting in electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance. The splitting is introduced by a coherent microwave field, which perturbs a three-level A-type EIT system through an auxiliary level. The doublet splitting of EIT resonance is demonstrated in two cases, where the microwave field shares a common lower level with coupled or probe transition, respectively. The dependence of doublet splitting on microwave field intensity and detuning is measured. This may provide a feasible way of manipulating the atomic states with both laser and microwave field.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes splitting: Two similar but distinct phenomena in two categories of three-level atomic systems

Tony Abi-Salloum

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes (AT) splitting are two phenomena that could be featured in a variety of three-level atomic systems. The considered phenomena, EIT and AT, are similar ``looking'' in the sense that they are both characterized by a reduction in absorption of a weak field in the presence of a stronger field. In this paper, we explicitly set the threshold of separation between EIT and AT splitting in a unified study of four different three-level atomic systems. Two resonances are studied and compared in each case. A comparison of the magnitudes of the resonances reveals two coupling-field regimes and two categories of three-level system.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes effect in a generalized L-system: A five-level model

We calculate electric susceptibility of a laser-dressed atomic medium. The model adopted in this work refers to the experiment with cold 85 Rb atoms, where the states F′ = 1, 2, 3 of the hyperfine manifold 5P 3/2 (F′) are strongly coupled with the ground state 5S 1/2 (F = 2), and the coupling is probed by a weak probing field from the other ground-state component 5S 1/2 (F = 3).We present a five-level model in which the states F = 2, 3 and F′ = 1, 2, 3 are taken into account, while the noncoupled state F′ = 4 is neglected. The model is used as a starting point to reproduce spectral features observed in the absorption of probe light passing through a cold sample of 85 Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap.Basing on numerical solutions of this model, we have also studied in detail the impact on the probe spectra from the presence of the state F′ = 1 to which probing is forbidden by electric-dipole transition, but coupling is allowed [see, e.g., Proc. of SPIE 8770 (2013) 87700Q].

Phase Control of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Cyclic Three-Level System

Lijun Yang, Dong-qi Lu, Min Zhao

We present a theoretical study on the spectral linewidth of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a cyclic three-level atomic system coupled by double coupling fields and a microwave field. The absorption profiles are obtained by a weak probe field scanning corresponding transition. It is shown that for definite Rabi frequencies of interacting fields the spectral linewidth of transparency windows depends on the relative phase between two coupling fields. In particular, as the relative phase of the double coupling fields approaches to , the linewidth narrows distinctly. This proposes a way to controlling spectral width of EIT by changing the relative phase between two fields.
