Abstract

We demonstrate a physics package for chip-scale atomic clocks in which the supporting frame itself serves as a primitive magnetic shield (∼20x attenuation). It measures 4.9×4.9×4.5 mm3 with its frequency instability ∼ 10−10 at 1 s.

Magnetic shield integration for a chip-scale atomic clock

Hyun-Gue Hong, Jongcheol Park, Tae Hyun Kim +5 more

We introduce a miniaturized magnetic shield integrated into the physics package of a chip-scale atomic clock. The primary shield, which is formed by a stack of precision-machined high-permeability plates, compactly sits inside the package as it is designed to be the internal supporting frame. Further improved by a Kovar lid, the best frequency sensitivity to a longitudinal external field is 1.1(3) × 10 −11 / μ T, which is consistent with the measured shielding factor, while the transverse sensitivity is well below 10 −12 / μ T. The sealed unit on a chip carrier alone allows stable clock operation with a frequency instability of 4.8(2) × 10 −12 at 1000 s.

We demonstrate the critical subsystems of a compact atomic clock based on a microfabricated physics package. The clock components have a total volume below 10 cm3, a fractional frequency instability of 6 × 10−10/τ1/2, and consume 200 mW of power. The physics package is easily adapted to function as a magnetometer with sensitivity below 50 pT Hz−1/2 at 10 Hz.

A simple, compact, low-power physics package for a vapour-cell atomic clock is described. The device measures 6.6 × 1.6 × 1.3 cm and dissipates less than 30 mW of electrical power without thermal control. The instability is 1.3 × 10-10/√[τ/(s)] for integration times τ below 100 s. Applications for this device include distributed telecommunications systems, advanced global positioning system (GPS) receivers and laboratory instrumentation.
