Coherent Impurity Transport in a Binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

We study the dynamics of a soliton-impurity system modeled in terms of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate. This is achieved by `switching off' one of the two self-interaction scattering lengths, giving a two component system where the second component is trapped entirely by the presence of the first component. It is shown that this system possesses rich dynamics, including the identification of unusual `weak' dimers that appear close to the zero inter-component scattering length. It is further found that this system supports quasi-stable trimers in regimes where the equivalent single-component gas does not, which is attributed to the presence of the impurity atoms which can dynamically tunnel between the solitons, and maintain the required phase differences that support the trimer state.

Two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in D -dimensional optical lattices

Jianjun Wang, Ai‐Xia Zhang, Kezhi Zhang +2 more

The impurity-induced self-trapping and stable moving soliton and breather of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) in deep $D$-dimensional optical lattices are discussed both analytically and numerically. Under the tight-binding approximation and within a time-dependent variational approach, analytical criteria for occurrences of a self-trapping, moving soliton and breather in the system are obtained. The analytical results are confirmed by direct numerical simulation. It is shown that the dynamics of the condensates can be modified significantly by a minor admixture of an impurity (the second component). The diffusion state of the single-component BEC will transit to the self-trapped state due to the minor admixture of an impurity, even if the two condensates are only with marginal spatial overlap. Furthermore, we find that, in certain conditions, a stable moving soliton can exist in high-dimensional lattices for the two-component BEC's, which is very different from the single-component BEC (where a moving soliton cannot be stabilized in high-dimensional lattices). On the other hand, the impurity can play a crucial role in causing important coherence-decoherence and localization-delocalization phase transitions.

Impurity localization, and collision properties of symbiotic dark-bright solitons in superfluid-impurity system

K Dileep, S. Murugesh

We investigate the dynamics of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in the impurity limit -- where one component is dilute enough to be treated like an impurity -- and confined to two dimensions. Using the mean-field coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we find that the binary mixture supports the formation of stable symbiotic dark-bright solitons when the inter- and intra-component interactions are repulsive. We further study the interaction between solitons and observe that the solitons undergo merging and repulsion depending on the relative phase between the bright component of the composite structure.

Dynamics of bright matter-wave solitons in inhomogeneous cigar-type Bose-Einstein condensate

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Lauro Tomio

We discuss the possible observation of a new type of standing nonlinear atomic matter wave in the condensate: the nonlinear impurity mode. It is investigated dynamical effects of a bright soliton in Bose-Einstein-condensed (BEC) systems with local space variations of the two-body atomic scattering length. A rich dynamics is observed in the interaction between the soliton and an inhomogeneity. Processes as trapping, reflection and transmission of the bright matter soliton due to the impurity are studied considering an analytical time-dependent variational approach and also by full numerical simulation. A condition is obtained for the collapse of the bright solitary wave in the quasi-one-dimensional BEC with attractive local inhomogeneity.

Soliton Molecules in the Impurity Component of Self-Trapping Bosonic Impurity

Abdelâali Boudjemâa, Khelifa Mohammed Elhadj

We investigate the dynamics of soliton molecules in the impurity component of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate-impurity mixture (polaronic soliton molecules) using the time dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations in a quasi one-dimensional geometry. We show that the impurity component which obeys the self-focussing nonlinear Schrodinger equation, supports bright soliton molecules even for repulsive interspecies interactions. The binding energy, the width, the equilibrium state and the evolution of such solitons are deeply analyzed within variational and numerical means. We find that our variational and numerical calculations well coincide with each other.
