Impurity localization, and collision properties of symbiotic dark-bright solitons in superfluid-impurity system

Abstract

We investigate the dynamics of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in the impurity limit -- where one component is dilute enough to be treated like an impurity -- and confined to two dimensions. Using the mean-field coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we find that the binary mixture supports the formation of stable symbiotic dark-bright solitons when the inter- and intra-component interactions are repulsive. We further study the interaction between solitons and observe that the solitons undergo merging and repulsion depending on the relative phase between the bright component of the composite structure.

Dynamics of imbalanced quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate in external potentials

K. K. Ismailov, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, F. Kh. Abdullaev +1 more

In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a new type of symbiotic solitons resembling dark-bright solitons. A variational approach has been developed which allows us to find the stationary state of the system and frequency of small amplitude dynamics near the equilibrium. It is shown that the strength of inter-component coupling can be retrieved from the frequency of the localized state's vibrations.

Bright solitons in coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates supported by interspecies attraction

Sadhan K. Adhikari

We demonstrate the formation of bright solitons in coupled defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation supported by attractive coupling. As an application we use a time-dependent dynamical mean-field model to study the formation of stable bright solitons in two-component repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) supported by interspecies attraction in a quasi one-dimensional geometry. When all interactions are repulsive, there cannot be bright solitons. However, bright solitons can be formed in two-component repulsive BECs for a sufficiently attractive interspecies interaction, which induces an attractive effective interaction among bosons of same type.

Statics and dynamics of atomic dark-bright solitons in the presence of impurities

Vassos Achilleos, P. G. Kevrekidis, Vassilis M. Rothos +1 more

Adopting a mean-field description for a two-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, we study the statics and dynamics of dark-bright solitons in the presence of localized impurities. We use adiabatic perturbation theory to derive an equation of motion for the dark-bright soliton center. We show that, counterintuitively, an attractive (repulsive) delta-like impurity, acting solely on the bright-soliton component, induces an effective localized barrier (well) in the effective potential felt by the soliton; this way, dark-bright solitons are reflected from (transmitted through) attractive (repulsive) impurities. Our analytical results for the small-amplitude oscillations of solitons are found to be in good agreement with results obtained via a Bogoliubov--de Gennes analysis and direct numerical simulations.

Dark-bright solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates at finite temperatures

Vassos Achilleos, D Yan, P G Kevrekidis +1 more

We study the dynamics of dark-bright (DB) solitons in binary mixtures of Bose gases at finite temperature using a system of two coupled dissipative Gross–Pitaevskii equations. We develop a perturbation theory for the two-component system to derive an equation of motion for the soliton centers and identify different temperature-dependent damping regimes. We show that the effect of the bright ('filling') soliton component is to partially stabilize 'bare' dark solitons against temperature-induced dissipation, thus providing longer lifetimes. We also study analytically thermal effects on DB soliton 'molecules' (i.e. two in-phase and out-of-phase DB solitons), showing that they undergo expanding oscillations while interacting. Our analytical findings are in good agreement with results obtained via a Bogoliubov–de Gennes analysis and direct numerical simulations.

Dark-bright soliton pairs: Bifurcations and collisions

G. C. Katsimiga, P. G. Kevrekidis, B. Prinari +2 more

The statics, stability, and dynamical properties of dark-bright soliton pairs are investigated here, motivated by applications in a homogeneous two-component repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate. One of the intraspecies interaction coefficients is used as the relevant parameter controlling the deviation from the integrable Manakov limit. Two different families of stationary states are identified consisting of dark-bright solitons that are either antisymmetric (out-of-phase) or asymmetric (mass imbalanced) with respect to their bright soliton. Both of the above dark-bright configurations coexist at the integrable limit of equal intra and interspecies repulsions and are degenerate in that limit. However, they are found to bifurcate from it in a transcritical bifurcation. This bifurcation interchanges the stability properties of the bound dark-bright pairs rendering the antisymmetric states unstable and the asymmetric ones stable past the associated critical point (and vice versa before it). Finally, on the dynamical side, it is found that large kinetic energies and thus rapid soliton collisions are essentially unaffected by the intraspecies variation, while cases involving near equilibrium states or breathing dynamics are significantly modified under such a variation.

Stable Vortex–Bright-Soliton Structures in Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

Kody J. H. Law, P. G. Kevrekidis, Laurette S. Tuckerman

We report the numerical realization of robust two-component structures in 2D and 3D Bose-Einstein condensates with nontrivial topological charge in one component. We identify a stable symbiotic state in which a higher-dimensional bright soliton exists even in a homogeneous setting with defocusing interactions, due to the effective potential created by a stable vortex in the other component. The resulting vortex-bright-solitons, generalizations of the recently experimentally observed dark-bright solitons, are found to be very robust both in the homogeneous medium and in the presence of external confinement.
