Abstract

In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a new type of symbiotic solitons resembling dark-bright solitons. A variational approach has been developed which allows us to find the stationary state of the system and frequency of small amplitude dynamics near the equilibrium. It is shown that the strength of inter-component coupling can be retrieved from the frequency of the localized state's vibrations.

Impurity localization, and collision properties of symbiotic dark-bright solitons in superfluid-impurity system

K Dileep, S. Murugesh

We investigate the dynamics of a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates in the impurity limit -- where one component is dilute enough to be treated like an impurity -- and confined to two dimensions. Using the mean-field coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we find that the binary mixture supports the formation of stable symbiotic dark-bright solitons when the inter- and intra-component interactions are repulsive. We further study the interaction between solitons and observe that the solitons undergo merging and repulsion depending on the relative phase between the bright component of the composite structure.

Stability and Dynamics of Dark-Bright Soliton Bound States Away from the Integrable Limit

G. C. Katsimiga, Jan Stockhofe, Panagiotis Kevrekidis +1 more

The existence, stability, and dynamics of bound pairs of symbiotic matter waves in the form of dark-bright soliton pairs in two-component mixtures of atomic Bose–Einstein condensates is investigated. Motivated by the tunability of the atomic interactions in recent experiments, we explore in detail the impact that changes in the interaction strengths have on these bound pairs by considering significant deviations from the integrable limit. It is found that dark-bright soliton pairs exist as stable configurations in a wide parametric window spanning both the miscible and the immiscible regime of interactions. Outside this parameter interval, two unstable regions are identified and are associated with a supercritical and a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation, respectively. Dynamical manifestation of these instabilities gives rise to a redistribution of the bright density between the dark solitons, and also to symmetry-broken stationary states that are mass imbalanced (asymmetric) with respect to their bright soliton counterpart. The long-time dynamics of both the stable and the unstable balanced and imbalanced dark-bright soliton pairs is analyzed.

Bright-dark soliton complexes in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Hector E. Nistazakis, D. J. Frantzeskakis, P. G. Kevrekidis +2 more

We consider vector solitons of mixed bright-dark types in quasi-one-dimensional spinor $(F=1)$ Bose-Einstein condensates. Using a multiscale expansion technique, we reduce the corresponding nonintegrable system of three coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations (GPEs) to an integrable Yajima-Oikawa system. In this way, we obtain approximate solutions for small-amplitude vector solitons of dark-dark-bright and bright-bright-dark types, in terms of the ${m}_{F}=+1,\ensuremath{-}1,0$ spinor components, respectively. By means of numerical simulations of the full GPE system, we demonstrate that these states indeed feature soliton properties, i.e., they propagate undistorted and undergo quasielastic collisions. It is also shown that in the presence of a parabolic trap the bright component(s) is (are) guided by the dark one(s) and, as a result, the small-amplitude vector soliton as a whole performs quasiharmonic oscillations. The oscillation frequency is found as a function of the spin-dependent interaction strength for both small-amplitude and large-amplitude solitons.

Two-dimensional symbiotic solitons and vortices in binary condensates with attractive cross-species interaction

Xuekai Ma, Rodislav Driben, Boris A. Malomed +2 more

We consider a two-dimensional (2D) two-component spinor system with cubic attraction between the components and intra-species self-repulsion, which may be realized in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, as well as in a quasi-equilibrium condensate of microcavity polaritons. Including a 2D spatially periodic potential, which is necessary for the stabilization of the system against the critical collapse, we use detailed numerical calculations and an analytical variational approximation (VA) to predict the existence and stability of several types of 2D symbiotic solitons in the spinor system. Stability ranges are found for symmetric and asymmetric symbiotic fundamental solitons and vortices, including hidden-vorticity (HV) modes, with opposite vorticities in the two components. The VA produces exceptionally accurate predictions for the fundamental solitons and vortices. The fundamental solitons, both symmetric and asymmetric ones, are completely stable, in either case when they exist as gap solitons or regular ones. The symmetric and asymmetric vortices are stable if the inter-component attraction is stronger than the intra-species repulsion, while the HV modes have their stability region in the opposite case.

Stable bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Two-dimensional fundamental soliton-soliton pairs are investigated in binary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions between atoms of the same type. Both attractive and repulsive interactions between atoms of different types are considered. The general properties of the stationary states are investigated variationally and numerically. The stability regions of the soliton-soliton pairs are determined.

Manifestation of Superfluidity in Atom-Number-Imbalanced Two-Component Bose–Einstein Condensates

S. M. Al-Marzoug, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, Usama Al Khawaja +1 more

Superfluid and dissipative regimes in the dynamics of a two-component quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with unequal atom numbers in the two components have been explored. The system supports localized waves of the symbiotic type owing to the same-species repulsion and cross-species attraction. The minority BEC component moves through the majority component and creates excitations. To quantify the emerging excitations, we introduce a time-dependent function called disturbance. Through numerical simulations of the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations with periodic boundary conditions, we have identified a critical velocity of the localized wave, above which a transition from the superfluid to dissipative regime occurs, as evidenced by a sharp increase in the disturbance function. The factors responsible for the discrepancy between the actual critical velocity and the speed of sound, expected from theoretical arguments, have been discussed.
