Coherent impurity transport in an attractive binary Bose–Einstein condensate

Abstract

Abstract We study the dynamics of a soliton-impurity system modeled in terms of a binary Bose–Einstein condensate. This is achieved by ‘switching off’ one of the two self-interaction scattering lengths, giving a two component system where the second component is trapped entirely by the presence of the first component. It is shown that this system possesses rich dynamics, including the identification of unusual ‘weak’ dimers that appear close to the zero inter-component scattering length. It is further found that this system supports quasi-stable trimers in regimes where the equivalent single-component gas does not, which is attributed to the presence of the impurity atoms which can dynamically tunnel between the solitons, and maintain the required phase differences that support the trimer state.

Two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in D -dimensional optical lattices

Jianjun Wang, Ai‐Xia Zhang, Kezhi Zhang +2 more

The impurity-induced self-trapping and stable moving soliton and breather of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC's) in deep $D$-dimensional optical lattices are discussed both analytically and numerically. Under the tight-binding approximation and within a time-dependent variational approach, analytical criteria for occurrences of a self-trapping, moving soliton and breather in the system are obtained. The analytical results are confirmed by direct numerical simulation. It is shown that the dynamics of the condensates can be modified significantly by a minor admixture of an impurity (the second component). The diffusion state of the single-component BEC will transit to the self-trapped state due to the minor admixture of an impurity, even if the two condensates are only with marginal spatial overlap. Furthermore, we find that, in certain conditions, a stable moving soliton can exist in high-dimensional lattices for the two-component BEC's, which is very different from the single-component BEC (where a moving soliton cannot be stabilized in high-dimensional lattices). On the other hand, the impurity can play a crucial role in causing important coherence-decoherence and localization-delocalization phase transitions.

Dynamics of bright matter-wave solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate with inhomogeneous scattering length

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Lauro Tomio

We investigate dynamical effects of a bright soliton in Bose–Einstein condensed (BEC) systems with local and smooth space variations of the two-body atomic scattering length. It includes a discussion about the possible observation of a new type of standing nonlinear atomic matter wave in cigar-type traps. A rich dynamics is observed in the interaction between the soliton and an inhomogeneity. By considering an analytical time-dependent variational approach and also full numerical simulation of one-dimensional and three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equations, we study processes such as trapping, reflection and transmission of the bright matter soliton due to the impurity. We also derive conditions for the collapse of the bright solitary wave, considering a quasi-one-dimensional BEC with attractive local inhomogeneity.

Dynamics of imbalanced quasi-one-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate in external potentials

K. K. Ismailov, Bakhtiyor B. Baizakov, F. Kh. Abdullaev +1 more

In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a new type of symbiotic solitons resembling dark-bright solitons. A variational approach has been developed which allows us to find the stationary state of the system and frequency of small amplitude dynamics near the equilibrium. It is shown that the strength of inter-component coupling can be retrieved from the frequency of the localized state's vibrations.
