Abstract

In this paper, we propose and demonstrate simultaneous phase regeneration of four different channels of QPSK signal based on phase sensitive amplification. The configuration can be divided into two parts. The first one uses four wave mixing in high nonlinear fiber (HNLF) to generate the corresponding three harmonic conjugates precisely at the frequency of the original signals. The other one uses optical combiner to realize coherent addition which is aimed at completely removing the interaction in phase regeneration stage. The simulation results suggest that this scheme can optimize signal constellation to a large extend especially in high noise environment. Besides, optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) can improve more than 3 dB while the bit-error-rate (BER) reaches 10 –3 with a constant white noise and 15° phase noise.

Phase regeneration of a star-8QAM signal in a phase-sensitive amplifier with conjugated pumps

Birgit Stiller, G. Onishchukov, Bernhard Schmauß +1 more

We demonstrate numerically phase regeneration of a star-8QAM signal with two amplitude and four phase states in a phase-sensitive amplifier. In a dual-stage setup, two phase-conjugated idlers are generated in a first stage consisting of two fiber-optic parametric phase-insensitive amplifiers operated in highly nonlinear gain regime. These are used as pumps in the second, phase-sensitive amplification stage which enables efficient phase regeneration via a degenerate four-wave-mixing process. The latter can be operated in two different operation modes: without format conversion or with phase-shifted amplitude levels. In both regimes, we observe high phase-regeneration efficiency for all amplitude levels: the initial phase noise with 0.2 rad standard deviation is reduced by a factor of 5.

In-line phase-sensitive amplification of QPSK signal using multiple quasi-phase matched LiNbO_3 waveguide

Masaki Asobe, Takeshi Umeki, Hirokazu Takenouchi +1 more

Phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSA) using periodically poled (PPLN) LiNbO₃ waveguides are promising as low-noise optical amplifiers. However, it is difficult to realize in-line operation for multi-level phase modulated signals using a PPLN based PSA with the conventional configuration. In this paper, we report a PPLN based in-line PSA that can regenerate quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals. Multi-stage frequency mixing in a multiple quasi-phase matched LiNbO₃waveguide allows carrier phase recovery from a QPSK signal. Non-degenerate parametric amplification enables the phase-sensitive amplification of a QPSK signal. Amplitude and phase regeneration is examined utilizing gain saturation and phase squeezing capability.

All-optical phase and amplitude regeneration of a QPSK signal using only two nonlinear stages is achieved by combining a PSA with a saturated pump-degenerate FWM based amplitude squeezer. EVM, phase noise and magnitude noise are all reduced by 50%.

Quadrature Squeezing and IQ De-Multiplexing of QPSK Signals by Sideband-Assisted Dual-Pump Phase Sensitive Amplifiers

Mingyi Gao, Takayuki Kurosu, Karen Solis-Trapala +2 more

High gain extinction ratio and stable control of the phase in phase sensitive amplification are fundamental to realize either phase regeneration or quadrature squeezing of phase modulated signals in an efficient and robust manner. In this paper, we show that a combination of our previously demonstrated “sideband-assisted” dual-pump phase sensitive amplifier with a gain extinction ratio of more than 25dB, and a phase-locked loop based stabilization technique, enable efficient QPSK quadrature squeezing. Its stable operation is exploited to realize phase de-multiplexing of QPSK signals into BPSK tributaries. The phase de-multiplexed signals are evaluated through measurement of constellation diagrams, eye diagrams and more importantly, BER curves. The de-multiplexed BPSK signals exhibited an OSNR penalty of less than 1dB compared to the back-to-back BPSK signals.

All-Optical Multi-Level Phase Quantization Based on Phase-Sensitive Amplification With Low-Order Harmonics

Hongxiang Wang, Limeng Pan, Feifei Lu +3 more

A novel scheme is proposed for all-optical multilevel phase quantization by mixing two lower-order harmonics, rather than mixing the signal with its conjugate (M - 1)th harmonic, which is difficult to be generated but necessary for the traditional quantization method. The low-order harmonics used in the proposed scheme are determined as the conjugate (M/2 - 1)th and the (M/2 + 1)th harmonics for M = 4n, or the conjugate (M/2 - 2)th and the (M/2 + 2)th harmonics for M = 4n + 2, or the conjugate [(M - 1)/2]th and the [(M + 1)/2]th harmonics for M = 2n + 1, n = 1, 2, 3 . . .. The simulations show the effectiveness of the scheme for the eightand nine-level all-optical phase quantization. Furthermore, the application of the scheme to the all-optical phase regeneration is validated. An improved method with two cascading stages is also proposed and validated to achieve a monotonic step-like phase- phase transfer characteristic for the optimized all-optical phase quantization. This proposed scheme provides a new way for multilevel phase quantization and multi-level phase shift keying regeneration to meet the ever increasing demand for the bandwidth in fiber-optic communication.

Optical phase regeneration of QPSK by employing two signal conjugates in a dual-pump degenerate phase-sensitive amplifier is verified via simulations. Phase error standard deviation of 12.827° is reduced to 3.357°. We further verify this scheme's scalability to support 8PSK.
