Abstract

Abstract The relationship between the oscillation of a metastable population and the slow light propagation in a Tm 3+ -doped optical fiber at room temperature is discussed. We study the influencing factors of the metastable population oscillation, such as the length of the Tm 3+ -doped fiber, the input signal power and the pump power. Further, we obtain the relationships between the length of the Tm 3+ -doped optical fiber, the input signal power and the pump power and the oscillation of metastable population in order to slow down the light pulse propagation speed through an optical fiber at room temperature.

Study on the relationship between the population of metastable state and time delay in an erbium-doped optical fiber

Qiu Wei, 高波 Gao Bo, Peng Lin +5 more

The slow light propagation in optical fiber has attracted much attention because of its practical applications. Use of coherent population oscillation to produce slow light propagation has many advantages over other methods. We investigate the reduction of the group velocity propagation by the coherent population oscillation in erbium-doped optical fiber, and also the relationship between the population of metastable state and the time delay by changing the doping concentration, the length of the fiber, the input power, and the pump power. The results show that we can select a high doping concentration of erbium in the fiber, increase the length of the fiber, decrease the pump power and select the appropriate power of the signal light to increases the time delay.

Slowdown of The Group Velocity in Tm~(3+)-doped Optical Fiber

Qiu We

According to the transition rates equation of the ground state population and the propagation equation, the numerical model of the group velocity slowdown was established. The relationship between the gain and pump power was analysized. In the absorption area of Tm3 +-dopedoptical fiber, the oscillation leads the pulse to experience absorption saturation, and the propagation delays. In the gain area of Tm3 +-doped optical fiber, this effect induces the pulse to experience gain saturation, and the propagation is in advance. According to the theoretical calculation, the group velocity slowdown is tunable due to coherent population oscillation in the Tm3 +-doped optical fiber amplifier at room temperature.

Research on the speed of light transmission in a dual-frequency laser pumped single fiber with two directions

Wei Qiu, Jianjun Liu, Yuda Wang +4 more

Abstract In this article a general theory of the coherent population oscillation effect in an erbium-doped fiber at room temperature is presented. We use dual pumping light waves with a simplified two-level system. Thus the time delay equations can be calculated from rate equations and the transmission equation. Using numerical simulation, in the case of dual-frequency pump light waves (1480 nm and 980 nm) with two directions, we analyze the influence of the pump power ratio on the group speed of light propagation. In addition, we compare slow light propagation with a single-pumping light and slow light propagation with a dual-pumping light at room temperature. The discussion shows that a larger time delay of slow light propagation can be obtained with a dual-frequency pumping laser. Compared to previous research methods, a dual-frequency laser pumped fiber with two directions is more controllable. Moreover, we conclude that the group velocity of light can be varied by changing the pump ratio.

Observation of superluminal and slow light propagation in erbium-doped optical fiber

Aaron Schweinsberg, Nikolay N. Lepeshkin, Matthew S. Bigelow +2 more

We observe both extremely slow and superluminal pulse propagation speeds at room temperature in an erbium-doped fiber (EDF). A signal at 1550 nm is sent through an erbium-doped fiber with varying powers of a 980 nm pump. The degree of signal delay or advancement is found to depend significantly on the pump intensity. We observe a maximum fractional advancement of 0.124 and a maximum fractional delay of 0.089. The effect is demonstrated both for a sinusoidally modulated signal and for Gaussian pulses. The ability to control the sign and magnitude of the pulse velocity could have important implications for applications in photonics.

Research on the effects of dual pumping on fast light propagation in an Er 3+ -doped optical fiber

Wei Qiu, Yuan Gao, Yuqi Wu +4 more

Abstract In this paper, we propose a general theory for the coherent population oscillation effect in an -doped optical fiber under dual-frequency laser pumping at room temperature. We aim at comparing the effect of dual pumping (1480 nm and 980 nm) with single pumping of 980 nm and single pumping of 1480 nm on time advancement. According to the numerical calculations, we analyze the relationships between relative modulation attenuation and modulation frequency, plus fractional advancement and modulation frequency under the dual-frequency pumping laser with co-propagation. Compared to single pumping, a greater change in the group refractive index can be found. The maximum time advancement of 0.24 ms under a dual-frequency pump laser with co-propagation is obtained. Moreover, we demonstrate the influence of the pump ratio M on time advancement with modulation frequencies of 40 Hz, 100 Hz and 200 Hz. The ability to control the group velocity of light could have an important application for photonics.

Propagation characteristics of fast light in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier

Senfar Wen, Sien Chi

A perturbation method is used to study the interactions among the signal power, pump power, and metastable population density for fast light in an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The impact of temporal pump depletion (TPD) on fast light is investigated in which TPD is the response of the pump power to the temporal variation of the metastable population density. It is found that the gain coefficient and the absolute value of the negative group velocity are overestimated without considering the TPD. The effects of high-order dispersions on fast light are also shown.
