Abstract

Experimental investigations of nonlinear characteristics of the transfer coefficient (G) and bistability phenomena in a quasioptical resonator with the ruby layer saturated under the electron spin resonance conditions (ESR) are presented. Experiments have been carried out on the special radiophysical complex BURAN /1/ at the electromagnetic wave frequency ν = 75⋅109H3 and in the temperature range T = 0.9 K + 4 K and with the static magnetic field H<6 T. A two-mirror half-symmetric open resonator has the mirror aperture about 2a=8λ, the radius of a spherical mirror R = 15λ , the quality factor Q ≈8⋅103 and operates on the spectral mode TEM0011. A ruby layer (thickness h = λ/4) is placed near the plane mirror.

The operation principle of the optical transistor is based on the optical bistability phenomenon and inversionless (differential) amplification in the passive Fabry-Perot resonator (OR), filled with a substance having non-linear adsorption or refraction. In the millimeter wave range such resonator with a paramagnetic saturated by the UHF field under the ESR conditions is used to reach the similar purposes. Nonlinear properties of quasi-optic open resonator with a layer of Crvsolution in heavy alcohol under the conditions of magnetic resonance

Alexey A. Vertiy, Sergiy P. Gavrilov

A quasi-optic resonator with a paramagnetic plane-parallel layer is considered. Stationary and non-stationary excitations of fields in such open resonator by a plane linearly polarized electromagnetic wave are studied. The dependences of the OR transmission coefficient as a nonlinear function on the magnetic component of the exciting electromagnetic field and time have been calculated assuming that magnetic susceptibility in paramagnetic is connected with the amplitude of a radio-frequency magnetic field as a nonlinear function determined from the Bloch''s equations. Bistability hysteretic phenomena and unstable operating regimes of the structure in question have been found.

Instability of Fabry-Perot interferometer with a multilayered paramagnetic filling

Alexey A. Vertiy, Sergiy P. Gavrilov, Sergey G. Chumachenko

The results of the analysis of the stability of stationary solutions of wave equations describing a behavior of the nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with a saturated paramagnetic filling are presented in this paper. The cases when paramagnetic medium is characterized by a homogeneously and non-homogeneously broadened line of the magnetic resonance have been considered. The analysis of the stability has been conducted using the two-layer Newton- Kantorovich method. Some characteristics of the electrodynamic structure under consideration have been calculated under conditions of high and low quality of the resonance structure and the absence of frequency deviation and magnetic field. These are transmission and absorption coefficients. Areas of unstable behavior of these characteristics of the resonance structure have been found.

Investigation of behaviour of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometer with a paramagnetic filling in the conditions of inhomogeneous broadening of the electron paramagnetic resonance line is of interest for different implementations in the spectroscopy, quasioptics and dynamic nuclear polarisation.

Bistability and Switching in a Rib Waveguide Resonator

Ulf Peschel, Dirk Michaelis, Thomas Peschel +1 more

Photonic data transmission and processing require highly efficient all-optical elements for signal amplification, switching and data storage. It could be shown experimentally that semiconductor planar resonators can be envisaged as promising candidates [1]. In particular, optical bistability, that has been shown to exist in these configurations, opens a wide field of applications. Because the operating frequencies are near the band gap of the direct semiconductors used the nonlinearities are giant. Hence the critical power for nonlinear effects to occur is fairly moderate. In view of these advantages it might be worthwhile to study such resonators in a waveguide scheme because it can be included into integrated optics configurations. In planar resonators one has not to worry about the absorption, being extremely large near the gap, because the overall thickness is only a few micrometers and they are usually operated in reflection. The situation appears more involved in waveguides. Usually one prefers to exploit the transmitted signal in order to separate input and output channels. Moreover the efficiency of the distributed Bragg reflectors, surrounding the cavity, is usually some orders of magnitude less than that of conventional planar mirrors requiring rather long reflectors. Because the cavity length exceeds that of planar resonators considerably too one has to guarantee that the overwhelming part of the resonator is essentially transparent for the guided mode. This has of course the consequence that it does not contribute to any resonant nonlinear effect. Hence we propose a resonator that is only loaded by a thin layer of nonlinear but absorbing material (GaAs) in the cavity region (see Fig.1).
