Abstract

A low-noise photodetector is a basic tool for the research of quantum information processing. We present a specially designed low-noise photoelectric detector with a bandwidth of 130 MHz, using a transimpedance amplification circuit.Based on the detailed calculation of the dependence on each parameter of the detector, a useful method of how to design a low-noise and broadband photodetector is provided. When the optical power is between 1.0 and 16 mW, the photodetector has a good linear response to the injected light. Its electronics noise power is below -77 dBm, which is within the whole bandwidth. When the incident light power is 2 mW, the output noise powers are 10.0, 8.0, and 6.0 dB higher than the corresponding electronics noise within the bandwidth of 1-50, 50-90, and 90-130 MHz, respectively, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. Thus, this photoelectric detector could have good application prospects in quantum communication and an optical cavity locking system.

500 MHz resonant photodetector for high-quantum-efficiency, low-noise homodyne measurement

Takahiro Serikawa, Akira Furusawa

We design and demonstrate a resonant-type differential photodetector for a low-noise quantum homodyne measurement at 500 MHz optical sideband with 17 MHz of bandwidth. By using a microwave monolithic amplifier and a discrete voltage buffer circuit, a low-noise voltage amplifier is realized and applied to our detector. 12 dB of signal-to-noise ratio of the shot noise to the electric noise is obtained with 5 mW of a continuous-wave local oscillator. We analyze the frequency response and the noise characteristics of a resonant photodetector, and the theoretical model agrees with the shot noise measurement.

High-Power Quantum-Limited Photodiode and Classical Laser Noise Squashing

Vincent Dumont, Jiaxing Ma, Eamon Eagan +1 more

To benefit high-power interferometry and the creation of low-noise light sources, we develop a simple lead-compensated photodetector enabling quantum-limited readout from 0.3 mW to 10 mW and 10 k$Ω$ transimpedance gain from 85 Hz - 35 MHz. Feeding the detector output back to an intensity modulator, we squash the classical amplitude noise of a commercial 1550 nm fiber laser to the shot noise limit over a bandwidth of 700 Hz - 200 kHz, observing no degradation to its (nominally ~100 Hz) linewidth.

Stabilization improvement of the squeezed optical fields using a high signal-to-noise ratio bootstrap photodetector

Xiaoli Wang, Liang Wu, Shaocong Liang +6 more

High-precision cavity locking is crucial for squeezing optical fields. Here, a bootstrapped low-noise photodetector is utilized in the generation process of the squeezed state of light. This process is based on a combination of a modified trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) circuit and a two-stage bootstrap amplifier circuit. This not only achieves high-precision and long-term stable locking of the optical cavity, but it also improves the degree to which the light field is squeezed. The experiment results show that the detector has a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 26.7 dB at the analysis frequency of 3 MHz when measuring the shot noise with an injection optical power of 800 µW, and the equivalent optical power noise level is lower than 2.4 pW/Hz in the frequency range of 1-30 MHz. Moreover, the squeezing degree of the quadrature amplitude squeezed state light field can be improved by more than 34.9% when the detector is used for optical cavity locking. The photodetector is useful in continuous variable (CV) quantum information research.

Improvement of high-gain shot-noise detector

Zhou Hai-ju

Based on the special demands of quantum optical experiments for low noise detectors,a high gain and shot noise detector was designed by combing an AC current coupled trans-impedance pre-amplify circuit and an ETX500photodiode.Compared with existing detectors, the designed detector shows better characteristics in gain, bandwidth and AC DC saturation. The output characteristics of the detector were measured by using a 1 064nm single frequency laser as a source and a frequency spectrum analyzer as the measuring instrument.Measuring results show that the power noise spectrum of the detector is 10dB higher than that of electronic noise spectrum when the injecting power for the detector is more than 850μW at 2MHz.Furthermore,the bandwidth of the shot noise detector reaches 5MH when the input infrared laser power is above 1.62mW.The remarkable linearities for the DC and AC currents are available when the input infrared laser power is increased to 36mW.Considering its higher gain and better DC AC saturation characteristics, the detector is advantageous to quantum optic experiments.
