Abstract

We demonstrate a multiplexing scheme for upconversion-based single-photon detection using a waveguide with multiple phase-matching peaks. Two different signal wavelengths are upconverted using two distinct pump wavelengths, where all the wavelengths are in the 1550-nm band. Background photon generation rates-4per pulse with high internal conversion efficiencies are observed using 20-ps-long pump pulses.

Dual-channel, single-photon upconversion detector at 13 μm

Jason S. Pelc, Paulina S. Kuo, Oliver Slattery +3 more

We demonstrate a two-channel, upconversion detector for counting 1300-nm-wavelength photons. By using two pumps near 1550 nm, photons near 1300 nm are converted to two spectrally distinct channels near 710 nm using sum-frequency generation (SFG) in a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) waveguide. We used spectral-conversion engineering to design the phase-modulated PPLN waveguide for simultaneous quasi-phasematching of two SFG processes. The two channels exhibit 31% and 25% full-system photon detection efficiency, and very low dark count rates (650 and 550 counts per second at a peak external conversion efficiency of 70%) through filtering using a volume Bragg grating. We investigate applications of the dual-channel upconversion detector as a frequency-shifting beamsplitter, and as a time-to-frequency converter to enable higher-data-rate quantum communications.

High-Efficiency Broadband Near-Infrared Single-Photon Frequency Upconversion and Detection*

Jianhui Ma, Huiqin Hu, Yu Chen +3 more

We propose and demonstrate a high efficiency broadband near infrared single-photon upconversion and detection with a broadband pump laser based on sum frequency conversion in the PPLN crystal. By using a pump laser centered at 1040 nm with a spectral bandwidth of 10 nm, the signal single-photons centered at 1562 nm with a broadband bandwidth up to 7.2 nm are frequency-converted from the near infrared to the visible regime. A maximum conversion efficiency of 18.8% is achieved, while the background noise is measured to be only 1.2 × 10−3 counts/pulse. The corresponding spectral linewidth of the upconverted photons is 0.2 nm. This scheme of broadband infrared single-photon upconversion and detection provides potential solutions in infrared laser ranging, broadband infrared imaging and quantum key distribution.

Multiplexed quantum frequency conversion

We study multiplexed quantum frequency conversion (m-QFC) on a single waveguide, where a single pump beam simultaneously converts multiple signal beams at distinct wavelengths. Using a three-peak periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, we demonstrate the multiplexed upconversion in the telecom band with internal efficiencies up to 73.6%. Tested with a multichannel photon-pair source, the quantum correlation is preserved well after the conversion, with coincidence-to-accidental ratio reaching 767. These results highlight a viable device approach to multiplexed quantum key distribution, quantum sensing, and quantum computing.

Long-wavelength-pumped upconversion single-photon detector at 1550 nm: performance and noise analysis

Jason S. Pelc, Long Ma, Christopher R. Phillips +5 more

We demonstrate upconversion-assisted single-photon detection for the 1.55-μm telecommunications band based on a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide pumped by a monolithic PPLN optical parametric oscillator. We achieve an internal conversion efficiency of 86%, which results in an overall system detection efficiency of 37%, with excess noise as low as 10(3) counts s(-1). We measure the dark count rate versus the upconversion pump-signal frequency separation and find the results to be consistent with noise photon generation by spontaneous anti-Stokes Raman scattering. These results enable detailed design guidelines for the development of low-noise quantum frequency conversion systems, which will be an important component of fiber-optic quantum networks.
