Gigabit pulse position bistability in semiconductor lasers

Dominic F. G. Gallagher, Ian H. White, J.E. Carroll +1 more

The paper briefly reviews the major forms of optical bistability in active optical devices compatible for use in gigabit optical communication systems, and reports an entirely new optical bistability for the first time. Unlike previous devices, the two bistable states of the optical device are each a series of picosecond optical pulses at 1 GHz or greater repetition rates, and are distinguished by a half period temporal shift between their temporal positions in relation to a clock pulse. The bistable device is based on a gain switched semiconductor laser. Theoretical studies suggest 100-ps switching speeds might be achieved, and experimental results are reported indicating optically triggered switching times of 500 ps.

Bistability and dynamic transient in active fibre-Bragg gratings

Xiaomei Wang

We have demonstrated bistability and dynamic transients as well as the modelling method in active optical fibre gratings with active medium where both non-linear Kerr interaction and chromatic dispersion are considered. The calculated results of the transmitted versus incident powers exhibit optical bistability for the static operation and transient oscillations for the dynamic operation. Higher optical gain causes smaller switching power and stronger bistable behaviour. (6 pages)

A Hybrid Optical Bistable Device Based on a Fibre Bragg Grating

Junqing Li, Qiang Chen, Qianghua Li +1 more

We propose a hybrid optical bistable device based on a fibre Bragg grating. The experimental set-up is designed by using real communication components. The optical bistable characteristics are simulated. The feedback nonlinearity and the delay time of the device are emphasized. We discuss the potential of such a device in sensor applications.
