Polarisation-entangled photon-pair source at 1550 nm using 1 mm-long PPLN waveguide in fibre-loop configuration

Satoru Odate, Akio Yoshizawa, Hidemi Tsuchida

A source of polarisation-entangled photons that uses the spontaneous parametric downconversion process in the telecommunication wavelength band is reported. A 1 mm-long periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide was placed in a fibre loop to realise spontaneous parametric downconversion, and it was operated at room temperature. Two-photon interferences having visibilities greater than 84% before subtraction of accidental coincidence counts were observed.

Heralded single-photon source utilizing highly nondegenerate, spectrally factorable spontaneous parametric downconversion

Fumihiro Kaneda, Karina Garay-Palmett, Alfred B. U’Ren +1 more

We report on the generation of an indistinguishable heralded single-photon state, using highly nondegenerate spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC). Spectrally factorable photon pairs can be generated by incorporating a broadband pump pulse and a group-velocity matching (GVM) condition in a periodically-poled potassium titanyl phosphate (PPKTP) crystal. The heralding photon is in the near IR, close to the peak detection efficiency of off-the-shelf Si single-photon detectors; meanwhile, the heralded photon is in the telecom L-band where fiber losses are at a minimum. We observe spectral factorability of the SPDC source and consequently high purity (90%) of the produced heralded single photons by several different techniques. Because this source can also realize a high heralding efficiency (> 90%), it would be suitable for time-multiplexing techniques, enabling a pseudo-deterministic single-photon source, a critical resource for optical quantum information and communication technology.

Detailed analysis of a single-photon source using gated spontaneous parametric downconversion

Ryo Okamoto, Shigeki Takeuchi, Keiji Sasaki

The photon-number distribution of an output state from a single-photon source using gated spontaneous parametric downconversion is analyzed in detail. For an improved experimental result of {P(0),P(1),P(2)}={0.59,0.40,0.009}, it is found that P(1) is restricted by the optical loss of the signal photon path (62%) and the cause of nonzero P(2) is the imperfection of the optical shutter for gating. A method by which to reconstruct the photon-number distribution via photon-counting measurement is also presented.
