Abstract

The influence of position-dependent mass (PDM) on nonlinear optical absorption (OA) coefficients and refractive index changes (RICs) is theoretically studied, within the framework of the iterative method and the compact-density-matrix approach. Through solving Schrödinger equation, the eigenfunctions and energy eigenvalues are obtained. The analytic expressions of the optical absorption coefficients and the refraction index changes are derived theoretically. The results reveal that the OA coefficients and the RICs are strongly affected by PDM, and both the peaks of them increase when considering PDM.

Nonlinear Optical Properties of a Quantum Well With Short-Range Bottomless Exponential Potential

Fatih Ungan

In the present study, the effect of the depth of the confinement potential on the nonlinear optical of a GaAs quantum well with short-range bottomless exponential potential is studied in detail. The energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of this structure are calculated within the framework of effective mass and envelope function approximations. Analytic formulas for the linear, third-order nonlinear and total absorption coefficients and relative refractive index changes are obtained using the compact-density matrix approach (CDMA) and iterative method. Based on this model, our obtained numerical results are reported as a function of incident photon energy for several values of the depth of the confinement potential. The results show that the linear, third order nonlinear, and total absorption coefficients and relative refractive index changes are strongly affected by the depth of the confinement potential.

Effects of hydrostatic pressure, temperature, and position-dependent mass on the nonlinear optical properties of triple delta-doped GaAs quantum well

Ahmet Türker Tüzemen, E. B. Al, H. Sayrac +3 more

Abstract In this study, we thoroughly investigate the impacts of hydrostatic pressure, temperature, and position-dependent mass (PDM) on the nonlinear optical properties of asymmetric triple δ-doped GaAs quantum wells. Our analysis covers total optical absorption coefficients, relative refractive index changes, nonlinear optical rectification, second harmonic generation, and third harmonic generation. Initially, we employ PDM to solve the time-independent Schrödinger equation using the diagonalization method under effective mass and parabolic band approaches, considering pressure and temperature dependencies. Utilizing the first four energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, we apply the compact density matrix method to compute the system’s nonlinear optical properties numerically. The results indicate a shift in optical property peak positions toward lower (higher) energy spectra with increasing hydrostatic pressure (temperature). Furthermore, the influence of PDM shifts the system’s optical properties toward the higher energy spectrum, resembling the effect of temperature. From an experimental and theoretical perspective, one of the topics that researchers work on most is GaAs-based δ-doped systems (δ-doped heterojunction bipolar transistors, δ-doped field effect transistors, δ-multiple independent gate field effect transistors, etc.). We believe these findings will provide valuable insights for the researchers involved in GaAs-based δ-doped optoelectronic device design.

Effect of hydrogenic impurity on linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in a quantum dot

Kangxian Guo, Zhongmin Zhang, Sen Mou +1 more

The analytical expressions of linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in a quantum dot with a hydrogenic impurity are obtained by using the compact-density-matrix approach and iterative method. The wave functions and the energy levels are obtained by using the variational method. Numerical results show that the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are strongly affected by the hydrogenic impurity.

Linear and nonlinear optical properties of quantum well with position-dependent effective mass

Gholamreza Honarasa, Alireza Keshavarz, Naser Zamani

Optical properties of quantum well nanostructure for typical GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs are investigated in a new approach. By using the point canonical transformation method and numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation, the energy levels and wave functions of electrons in the quantum well confinement potential are calculated. Then, the effect of position-dependent effective mass on the intersubband optical absorption coefficient and the refractive index changes of the quantum well calculated by compact density matrix method, are studied. Results are compared with the case of constant mass. Our results show that with considering spatially varying electron effective mass linear and nonlinear optical properties increases and shifts toward the lower energies. Researches on this matter open a new field in fundamental and applied physics, and also offer a wide range of potential applications for photonic devices.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes with the screened cosine Kratzer potential

Yawen Cai, Xuechao Li, Xiaolong Yan +2 more

Abstract This study explores how hydrostatic pressure, temperature, incident light intensity, and structural parameters modulate optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As spherical quantum dots under the screened cosine Kratzer potential. We use the Nikiforov-Uvarov method to solve the Schrödinger equation to determine the relevant wave functions and energy levels. And using iterative method and density matrix theory, we derived analytical expressions for the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. The results of the numerical analyses demonstrate that both the structural parameters of the quantum dots and the external environmental factors significantly influence the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes, with varying degrees of impact. It is particularly noteworthy that these factors are extremely important for modulating the peak amplitude and resonance peak position of the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes, providing important theoretical basis for us to deeply understand and modulate the nonlinear optical properties of quantum dots.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in a two-electron quantum dot

Liangliang Lu, Wenfang Xie, HASSAN HASSANABADI

Analytical expressions of the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in a two-electron quantum dot with oscillating and linear confining terms are obtained by using compact-density matrix approach and exact analytical method. Numerical results on typical GaAs/AlGaAs materials show that, an increase of the confinements blueshifts the peak positions of absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. Additionally, an increase of the optical intensity and relaxation time considerably changes the absorption coefficients as well as the refractive index changes.
