Error rate measurements of a Josephson single flux quantum binary ripple counter

D.J. Durand, Robert D. Sandell, Lee O. Heflinger +1 more

Single-flux quantum devices are used in superconductive analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), shift registers, and memory cells. They have been proposed for logic applications. The authors report the performance of high-speed superconducting, single-flux quantum (SFQ) ripple counters. Both memory and logic functions of the counter are investigated. Errors in logic operation produce bit error rates (BERs) as low as 0.22 errors per million binary operations, measured while counting 100-MHz pseudorandom input pulses. Errors in memory function do not occur on the time scale of the measurements. The BER is shown to be nearly independent of input bit rate and pattern, but strongly dependent on the counter cell operating point.< >

A High-Speed Interface Based on a Josephson Latching Driver for Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron Logic

Fumihiro China, Naoki Takeuchi, Hideo Suzuki +3 more

The adiabatic quantum flux parametron (AQFP) is an energy-efficient, high-speed superconducting logic device. To observe the tiny output currents from the AQFP in experiments, high-speed voltage drivers are indispensable. In the present study, we develop a compact voltage driver for AQFP logic based on a Josephson latching driver (JLD), which has been used as a high-speed driver for rapid single-flux-quantum (RSFQ) logic. In the JLD-based voltage driver, the signal currents of AQFP gates are converted into gap-voltage-level signals via an AQFP/RSFQ interface and a four-junction logic gate. Furthermore, this voltage driver includes only 15 Josephson junctions, which is much fewer than in the case for the previously designed driver based on dc superconducting quantum interference devices (60 junctions). In measurement, we successfully operate the JLD-based voltage driver up to 4 GHz. We also evaluate the bit error rate (BER) of the driver and find that the BER is 7.92×10-10 and 2.67×10-3 at 1GHz and 4GHz, respectively.

Bit Error Rate measurement of an RSFQ switch by using an automatic error counter

Kim Se Hoon, Kim Jin Young, Baek Seung Hun +3 more

The problem of fluctuation-induced digital errors in a rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) circuit has been very important issue. So in this experiment, we calculated error rate of RSFQ switch in superconductiyity ALU, The RSFQ switch should have a very low error rate in the optimal bias. We prepared two circuits Placed in parallel. One was a 10 Josephson transmission lines (JTLs) connected in series, and the other was the same circuit but with an RSFQ switch placed in the middle of the 10 JTLs. We used a splitter to feed the same input signal to the both circuits. The outputs of the two circuits were compared with an RSFQ XOR to measure the error rate of the RSFQ switch. By using a computerized bit error rate test setup, we measured the bit error rate of 2.18 when the bias to the RSFQ switch was 0.398mh that was quite off from the optimum bias of 0.6mA.
