Abstract

The atomic-beam velocity distribution of Gd atomic metastable levels, 215 cm −1 , 533 cm −1 were measured by means of the laser induced fluorescence method. Their lifetimes are deduced from the change of the velocity distributions at two different probe areas along the beam axis. The experimental results show that this is a very simple, sensitive and effective method to measure the lifetime of atomic metastable level

Lifetime measurement of metastable state of Yttrium atom

Qing Du

Measurement of Doppler-shifb profile of yttrium atomic beam was performed by using a tunable dye laser and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique. Comparing the intensities of two LIF which originate from the ground state and metastable state with different velocity, the lifetime of the metastable statc a2D5/2 of yttrium was measured to be (0.8+0.2)ms.

Lifetime Measurement of 5s5p~3P_1 Metastable State for Sr Atom by Means of TOF Method

H. Chang

In this paper,we give a new method to measure the lifetime of 5s5p3P1 metastable state for Sr atom, based on the TOF method and the absorption spectrum technique.During the experiment,we use the 689 nm laser to pump the Sr atoms of ground state(5s2)1S0 to the 5s5p3P1 metastable state, then we obtain the 688 nm laser absorption spectrums by using the 688 nm probing laser. With these spectrums we change different parameters to obtain a good index decaying curve and then we can get the value of τ.The value of our experimental is(21.9±0.8) μs.The method presented here have a low demand of experimental setup and can get a relatively high precision synchronously.

Fast-beam laser lifetime measurements of the cesium 6p2P1/2,3/2 states

Robert J. Rafac, Carol E. Tanner, A. E. Livingston +1 more

We provide a detailed description of our fast-beam laser lifetime measurements in atomic cesium. Selective excitation of the neutral ${}^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ $6p{}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ and $6p{}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ states is accomplished with resonant diode laser light directed transversely to the atomic velocity. The in-flight decay of the excited-state fluorescence is observed with a position-correlated single photon-counting detector. The Doppler-shifted $6p{}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ resonance, when probed with longitudinally propagating laser radiation, provides a precise means for determination of the beam velocity, and converts the position scale to a time scale. Our lifetime results are $35.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.10 \mathrm{ns}$ for the $6p{}^{2}{P}_{1/2}$ state and $30.57\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07 \mathrm{ns}$ for the $6p{}^{2}{P}_{3/2}$ state. These results represent a data set larger than in our previous work, and include beam divergence corrections which have been evaluated by two different methods. We present comparisons of our results with previous measurements and with relativistic many-body calculations of atomic transition matrix elements in this neutral alkali system.

Measurement of the lifetime of the 5d6pF31 state of barium

Paul E. Jessop, F. M. Pipkin

A delayed-coincidence technique has been used to measure the lifetime of the $5d6p^{1}F_{3}$ state of atomic barium. An intermediate, $6s5d^{1}D_{2}$ metastable state of barium atoms in an atomic beam was populated by electron bombardment, and a pulsed cw laser was employed to excite atoms from the metastable state to the $5d6p^{1}F_{3}$ state. A time-to-amplitude convertor was used to measure the time distribution of the fluorescent light. The value obtained for the lifetime was (44.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8) nsec.

Lifetime of the XeII6p4P5/20level using the fast-beam-laser method

R. E. Silverans, G. Borghs, Peter De Bisschop +2 more

The lifetime of the Xe II 5p 4 6p 4 P 5/2 0 level is measured by selective laser excitation of a fast beam of metastable 5p 4 5d 4 D 7/2 xenon ions and observations of the fluorescent light intensity as a function of flight time. Comparison of the obtained mean lifetime tau =7.53+or-0.15 ns with earlier measurements confirms the results of the photon-photon delayed-coincidence technique.
