Abstract

In this paper,we give a new method to measure the lifetime of 5s5p3P1 metastable state for Sr atom, based on the TOF method and the absorption spectrum technique.During the experiment,we use the 689 nm laser to pump the Sr atoms of ground state(5s2)1S0 to the 5s5p3P1 metastable state, then we obtain the 688 nm laser absorption spectrums by using the 688 nm probing laser. With these spectrums we change different parameters to obtain a good index decaying curve and then we can get the value of τ.The value of our experimental is(21.9±0.8) μs.The method presented here have a low demand of experimental setup and can get a relatively high precision synchronously.

Lifetime calculations for the 5s5p P-3(2) metastable level of Sr-88 I

Liu, Yong, Andersson, Martin, Tomas Brage +2 more

We report on a large scale calculation concerning the 5s(2) S-1 and 5s5p P-1,P-3 levels in Sr-88 I, using multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock methods. Our focus is on the P-3(2) meta-stable level, which has been shown to be extremely useful in atom cooling and trapping experiments. The lifetime for this level from our work (1071 s) agrees very well with a previous theoretical value, but not with the available experimental value (520(-140)(+310)s). The results for all the transitions between the 5s2 1S and 5s5p P-1,P-3 levels and within the 5s5p P-1,P-3 terms are also given.

Lifetime measurement of the metastable 4dD5∕22 state in Sr+88 using a single trapped ion

V. Letchumanan, M. A. Wilson, Patrick Robert Gill +1 more

The natural lifetime of the metastable $4d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}D_{5∕2}$ state in $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}^{+}$ has been measured using a single laser-cooled, trapped ion. The ion was prepared in the $4d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}D_{5∕2}$ state by laser excitation of the $5s\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}S_{1∕2}\ensuremath{-}4d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}D_{5∕2}$ quadrupole transition at 674 nm. The decay time was measured by using Dehmelt's electron shelving method to monitor the ion's electronic state. Two separate investigations were conducted under slightly different experimental conditions. 160 000 decay times from the $4d\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}D_{5∕2}$ state were observed in total, and two different methods for determining the statistical value of the measured lifetime have been compared. Systematic effects have also been estimated, and including these effects yields a value of $\ensuremath{\tau}=390.8(1.6)\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{ms}$ ($1\ensuremath{\sigma}$ uncertainty) for the natural lifetime.

Radiative lifetime measurement of the1S0metastable state of Kr2+using an electrostatic ion trap

Suguru Itoi, Hiroaki Kai, M. Saito +1 more

We measured the radiative lifetime of the 1S0 metastable state of Kr2+. This state dominantly decays to the 3P1 state via a magnetic dipole transition. The lifetime was determined by measuring emitted photons (350.5 nm) as a result of the 1S0 → 3P1 decay of Kr2+ stored in an electrostatic ion trap. The obtained radiative lifetime was 15.3 ± 0.9 ms, which agrees with the experimental value reported by Calamai and Johnson (1992 Phys. Rev. A 45 7792) within experimental error.

Experimental investigation of spectrum of strontium intercombination transition

Wang Ye-Bing, Chen Jie, Tian Xiao +2 more

We observe the fluorescence and the saturated fluorescence spectra of (5s2)1S0(5s5p)3P1 intercombination transition of thermal strontium atomic beam. Experimental investigation of 88Sr(5s2)1S0(5s5p)3P1 intercombination transition is performed on the different experimental conditions. Our study indicates that experimental parameters affect spectra largely, including temperature, intensity of laser and scanning frequency of laser. Intensity of spectrum is reciprocal of scanning frequency of laser due to long lifetime of (5s5p)3P1 state of Sr atom. Owing to Doppler broadening, transit broadening and other experimental factors, the linewidth of (5s2)1S0(5s5p)3P1 fluorescence spectrum is far more than its natural linewidth and proportional scanning frequency of laser.

Observation of transitions in strontium triplet state and its application in optical clock

Gao Feng, Wang Ye-Bing, Tian Xiao +2 more

In this paper we present a method of observing triplet state transitions of strontium. The intercombination transition is employed to pump the atom population from singlet-state (5s2)1S0 to triplet-state (5s5p)3P1 by a laser at 689 nm. Then 688 nm laser is also employed to divide atom population into the two other triplet-state states (5s5p)3P0 and (5s5p)3PP2. We can obtain the absorption signals of triplet-state transition (5s6s)3S1 → (5s5p)3P0 and (5s6p)3S1 → (5s5p)3P3P2. And these atomic absorption signals can be used for stabilizing the repumping light 679 nm and 707 nm directly to transition line of strontium. This method can be used in the Doppler cooling of strontium atoms.

Direct measurement of the P 0 3 clock state natural lifetime in Sr 87

Jonathan Dolde, D. Ganapathy, Xin Zheng +3 more

Optical lattice clocks based on the narrow ( 5 s 2 ) S 0 1 − ( 5 s 5 p ) P 0 3 transition in neutral strontium (Sr) are among the most precise and accurate measurement devices in existence. Although this transition is completely forbidden by selection rules, state mixing from the hyperfine interaction in Sr 87 provides a weakly allowed transition that can be coherently driven with practical clock laser intensities. While the coherent interrogation times of optical clocks are typically set by the linewidth of the probe laser, this limitation can be overcome in synchronous differential comparisons between ensembles. In such measurements the natural lifetime of the S 0 1 – P 0 3 clock transition becomes the fundamental limiting factor to the duration of a single run of the experiment. However, a direct measurement of the decay rate of the clock excited state is quite challenging due to the competing effects of other loss channels such as Raman scattering, inelastic collisions, and atom loss due to background gas. In this work, we monitor the decay of Sr atoms trapped in an optical lattice and initialized in the P 0 3 state. By making measurements of high and low density ensembles of both Sr 87 and Sr 88 across varying lattice trap depths, we isolate radiative decay, which accounts for a significant fraction of the observed decays at low depths. We obtain a natural radiative decay lifetime of 167 − 40 + 79 s for the P 0 3 clock state in Sr 87 , a value that is consistent with previously reported measurements and theoretical predictions. We also introduce an additional measurement scheme that involves repeated measurements of the ground-state population within a single experimental sequence, validating our model and the consistency of the measured rates. We expect that the techniques introduced in this work are applicable to lifetime measurements of long-lived metastable states in other atoms and ions used for clocks and quantum computing. The results presented in this work inform performance estimates of proposed gravitational wave detectors and long-baseline atom interferometers making use of Sr 87 .
