Abstract

Abstract We report the measurement of the metastable-state lifetime of erbium ions doped in a fiber. We apply the pump–probe technique with a wavelength-tunable laser array. This technique allows us to measure the lifetime through delayed absorption in the fiber propagation directions. By tuning the wavelength of the pump–probe pulse pairs to a low absorption wavelength, the lifetime of the metastable state is successfully measured in a 5-m-long fiber. The lifetime is determined to be 10.0 ms, which agrees well with previously reported values.

Pump–probe measurement of metastable state lifetime reduced by cooperative upconversion in a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber

K. Kuroda, Mami Nakandakari, Yuzo Yoshikuni

We report measurements of the metastable state lifetime in a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber. We use a single-wavelength pump-probe technique that allows us to measure the average lifetime over the entire fiber length. A reduction in the lifetime of approximately 20% caused by a cooperative upconversion effect is clearly observed when the input power is increased up to 10 mW. The input power dependence of the lifetime is analyzed using a simple model. The cooperative upconversion coefficient is determined based on this analysis.

Saturable Absorption in Erbium-doped Fiber and Optical Bistability in Erbium-doped Fiber Ring Laser

Deeksha Jachpure, R. Vijaya

Saturable absorption in erbium-doped fiber is presented through absorption measurements using a tunable laser and variable power. Its consequent optical bistability is also observed in erbium-doped fiber ring laser with long lengths of the fiber. Higher absorption at shorter wavelengths enables a wider bistable range.

Controllable propagation of light pulses in Er-doped fibers with saturable absorption

Serguei I. Stepanov, Eliseo Hernández

We report controllable (slow or fast) propagation of low-intensity probe-light pulses through erbium-doped fiber periodically saturated by the synchronized master-pulse sequence. These two pulse sequences could have significantly different carrier wavelengths within the fundamental absorption spectrum 1470-1570 nm of Er(+3) ions. The effect of fractional delay or advancement grew with the fiber optical absorption at the probe wavelength and could be significantly stronger than that at the saturating wavelength. The probe-pulse advancement was observed in the case when the saturating and probe waves were modulated approximately in antiphase. The observed effects are explained in the framework of a simple model of a periodically saturated homogeneously broadened absorption line.

Study on the relationship between the population of metastable state and time delay in an erbium-doped optical fiber

Qiu Wei, 高波 Gao Bo, Peng Lin +5 more

The slow light propagation in optical fiber has attracted much attention because of its practical applications. Use of coherent population oscillation to produce slow light propagation has many advantages over other methods. We investigate the reduction of the group velocity propagation by the coherent population oscillation in erbium-doped optical fiber, and also the relationship between the population of metastable state and the time delay by changing the doping concentration, the length of the fiber, the input power, and the pump power. The results show that we can select a high doping concentration of erbium in the fiber, increase the length of the fiber, decrease the pump power and select the appropriate power of the signal light to increases the time delay.
