Abstract

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency(EIT) and Slow Group Velocity(SGV) in Pr3+∶Y2SiO5 were investigated using the density matrix equations of the interaction between light and matter and their numerical solutions. The influences of inhomogeneous line width and coherence driving field on EIT and SGV were analyzed. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental ones.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency using six level atoms doped in the crystalline medium

Hassan Kaatuzian, Sina Mehrabadi, Ahmad Ajdarzadeh Oskouei

Using the density matrix theory of interaction between light and matter, and relevant parameters of the relaxation rates for a six-level model, we have shown theoretically the possibility of realizing Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) and Slow Light effects in Pr(+3 ion) doped YSO crystal. In addition, we have presented a simplified method to analyse EIT effect in such a six level atomic system. Finally, we have demonstrated results of numerical calculation and have compared them with experimental measurements reported recently.

Coherent Optical Field Manipulation and Optical Information Processing Based on Electromagnetically-Induced Transparency Effect in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 Crystal

Jianji Liu, Zhixiang Li, Hongming Fan +1 more

We reviewed the recent progress in coherent manipulation on light fields based on the electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) effect in Pr3+-doped Y2SiO5 crystal. The results show that, on one hand, the atomic coherence grating, formed when the light pulse is stored in Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal under the EIT condition has similar properties to the traditional holographic grating. On the other hand, the atomic coherence grating has its own unique characteristics that are different from those of traditional holographic grating. The EIT-induced nonlinearity and atomic coherence gratings can be used to manipulate the amplitude, the phase and the polarization state of light fields; therefore, they are of important applications for optical signal processing, quantum information processing and imaging processing.

Effects of inhomogeneous line broadening on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow group velocity

Elena Kuznetsova, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Marlan O. Scully

We show for the first time an explicit expression of the linewidth of an EIT resonance in an inhomogeneously broadened three-level (Lambda) system, and the conditions for the dependence of the linewidth on a driving field strength. Both gaseous systems with the Doppler effect and solid media in which inhomogeneity of the crystalline field results in a broad distribution of atomic center frequencies are considered. We find two extreme cases: in one extreme the linewidth of EIT resonance is proportional to the intensity of a drive laser. And in the other it is proportional to the Rabi frequency of a drive laser, which recovers the result obtained by Feld and Javan. The dispersive properties of EIT, leading to slow group velocity of light, in an inhomogeneously broadened system are also considered.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and retrieval of light pulses in a Λ-type and a V-type level scheme in Pr3+:Y2SiO5

Fabian Beil, Jens Klein, Gor Nikoghosyan +1 more

We examine electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), the optical preparation of persistent nuclear spin coherences and the retrieval of light pulses both in a Λ-type and a V-type coupling scheme in a Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal, cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The medium is prepared by optical pumping and spectral hole burning, creating a spectrally isolated Λ-type and a V-type system within the inhomogeneous bandwidth of the 3 H 4 ↔ 1 D 2 transition of the Pr 3+ ions. By EIT, in the Λ-type scheme we drive a nuclear spin coherence between the ground-state hyperfine levels, while in the V-type scheme we drive a coherence between the excited-state hyperfine levels. We observe the cancellation of absorption due to EIT and the retrieval of light pulses in both level schemes. This also permits the determination of dephasing times of the nuclear spin coherence, either in the ground state or the optically excited state.

Transverse Optical Properties of the Eu 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 Crystal in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Li-Ru Yang, Chunfang Wang, Dawei Zhang

According to density matrix equations of the interaction between light and matter, the expression for the susceptibility of the Eu 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal is obtained. When the control field is a Gaussian beam, we investigate and analyze the influence of probe detuning, the Rabi frequency of the control field and the laser line width on the transverse optical properties. We also analyze the influence of the dope-ion concentration on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The analysis result indicates that the transmission is not a monotonic function of the dope-ion concentration. Based on the influences of various parameters on the transverse optical properties, we choose the appropriate parameters to realize the desired EIT and gradient refractive index, which has applications in focusing and imaging.

Atomic interference phenomena in solids with a long-lived spin coherence

Elena Kuznetsova, Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Philip Hemmer +1 more

We generalize the theory of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow group velocity for the case of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening in both one- and two-photon transitions which unavoidably takes place in solid materials with a long-lived spin coherence. We identify regimes of EIT where the linewidth can be essentially reduced due to inhomogeneous broadening and, moreover, can be proportional to the amplitude of the driving field rather than the intensity. We suggest also a class of solid materials, namely, rare-earth ion doped semiconductors or dielectrics with electricdipole allowed transitions, that is very promising for realization and applications of EIT.
