Abstract

We examine electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), the optical preparation of persistent nuclear spin coherences and the retrieval of light pulses both in a Λ-type and a V-type coupling scheme in a Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal, cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The medium is prepared by optical pumping and spectral hole burning, creating a spectrally isolated Λ-type and a V-type system within the inhomogeneous bandwidth of the 3 H 4 ↔ 1 D 2 transition of the Pr 3+ ions. By EIT, in the Λ-type scheme we drive a nuclear spin coherence between the ground-state hyperfine levels, while in the V-type scheme we drive a coherence between the excited-state hyperfine levels. We observe the cancellation of absorption due to EIT and the retrieval of light pulses in both level schemes. This also permits the determination of dephasing times of the nuclear spin coherence, either in the ground state or the optically excited state.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in solid-state atomic ensembles (Conference Presentation)

We study Lambda-type electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cryogenically-cooled, europium and praseodymium doped yttrium orthosilicate (Eu:YSO and Pr:YSO). We use spectral hole burning techniques to vary the optical inhomogeneous width of the sub-ensemble of atoms participating in the EIT. The effect of inhomogeneous broadening has been studied in the context of Doppler broadened gases, but less so in solids where motional effects are absent and the coherence is not limited by the transit of atoms through the optical field. Rare earth doped crystals, like many solid-state systems, exhibit spectral hole burning in which a narrowband laser field optically pumps atoms to states in the ground manifold that are dark with respect to the applied field, opening up a transparency window that persists after the pumping laser is shuttered. More complex sequences of fields at multiple frequencies can create arbitrary spectral profiles, within bounds set by the particular energy level structure of the atoms. For both Eu:YSO and Pr:YSO, there are three hyperfine ground states and three hyperfine excited states (at zero magnetic field) and all nine transitions are dipole-allowed with varying transition strengths. We use spectral hole-burning techniques to prepare a sub-ensemble of atoms in a particular frequency class and a particular ground spin state, while also pumping atoms out of another ground state to create a Lambda system. We observe the same functional dependence of the EIT width on the optical inhomogeneous width and independently calibrated control field Rabi frequency in both systems.

Experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in Pr3+:LaF3

We report an experimental observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in Pr3+:LaF3 at liquid helium temperature at the 3H4(0)–1D2 (16 872 cm−1) transition. Transparency resonance at ground state hyperfine sublevels (in a Λ scheme) and a dispersion-shaped resonance due to excited state hyperfine coherences (in a V scheme) are detected. Theoretical analysis taking into account the six-level Pr3+ level structure gives qualitative agreement with the experiment.

Stopped Light at High Storage Efficiency in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 Crystal

Daniel Schraft, Marcel Hain, Nikolaus Lorenz +1 more

We demonstrate efficient storage and retrieval of light pulses by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Pr^{3+}:Y_{2}SiO_{5} crystal. Using a ring-type multipass configuration, we increase the optical depth (OD) of the medium up to a factor of 16 towards OD≈96. Combining the large optical depth with optimized conditions for EIT, we reach a light storage efficiency of (76.3±3.5)%. In addition, we perform extended systematic measurements of the storage efficiency versus optical depth, control Rabi frequency, and probe pulse duration. The data confirm the theoretically expected behavior of an EIT-driven solid-state memory.

Effective regime of electromagnetically induced transparency in a Pr3+:LaF3 crystal

Ахмеджанов Ринат Абдулхаевич, A. A. Bondartsev, Л. А. Гущин +1 more

The results of experimental and numerical investigations of electromagnetically induced transparency in a Pr 3+ :LaF 3 crystal have been presented. A spectrally isolated Λ system has been made of a specially prepared medium of an ensemble of particles with an inhomogeneous width less than the hyperfine splitting of both upper and lower operating levels. A considerable increase in the transmittance with respect to an unprepared medium has been demonstrated. It has been shown that, under the experimental conditions, the transmittance is limited by the apparatus (spread of the transmission peak by the instrumental linewidth specified by the probe pulse length).

Efficient generation of Raman echo and time-domain optical data storage by electromagnetically induced transparency

Myung K. Kim, Philip Hemmer, Byoung Seung HAM +1 more

We have observed excitation of spin echoes and spin free induction decay (FID) by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an optically dense solid sample. The experiments are done in a double-lambda system of 605.7 nm 3H4 - 1D2 transition of Pr3+:Y2SiO5, where the 10.2 MHz ground state spin coherence is excited by low-power resonant Raman pulses. It has been shown that the spin coherence, including spin echo, is equivalent to the transparent state of EIT, and therefore a high efficiency is expected for such resonant Raman-excited spin echo. The observed efficiency of spin echo is as high as 75% of the FID signal at 5K. A background-free detection scheme is used based on EIT and enhanced nondegenerate four-wave mixing. The technique is applied in the frequency-selective time-domain optical data storage, that utilizes the spin as well as the optical inhomogeneous spectral widths. The data storage scheme is analogous to the stimulated spin echo with resonant Raman excitation of the spin coherence. We verify that the write window is determined by the spin T2 which is much longer than the optical T2, especially at higher temperature. We find that the spin dephasing time T2 is almost constant at approximately 500 microseconds in the range of 2 to approximately 6 K, whereas the optical T2 decreases rapidly, by a factor of approximately 50, above 4 K. These results will be useful in the development of high capacity time-domain optical data storage operating at higher temperature.

Enhanced nondegenerate four-wave mixing owing to electromagnetically induced transparency in a spectral hole-burning crystal

Byoung Seung HAM, M. S. Shahriar, Philip Hemmer

We have demonstrated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogeneously broadened spectral hole-burning system of Pr(3+)-doped Y(2)SiO(5) at 6 K. We have also shown enhancement of four-wave mixing under conditions of reduced absorption. This demonstration opens the possibilities of pursuing EIT applications such as high-resolution optical image processing and optical data storage in solids.
