Abstract

We have detected the two-photon absorption signals of Ba in a heat-pipe cell using a thermoelectronic diode. The relations between signal characteristics and pressure, temperature, bias voltage, position of interaction zone were studied both experimentally and theoretically.

Analysis of the laser phase noise conversion by an atomic vapor

Messaoud J. Bahoura, Philippe Laurent, N. Dimarcq +1 more

We present theoretical and experimental studies of the influence of diode laser phase noise on the detection of the absorption signal in an atomic vapor cell, and we compare the noise of the absorption and fluorescence signals. Excess noise is observed on both sides of the atomic resonance.

Two-photon spectroscopy of Rb Rydberg states

Nobuhiko Ito

Doppler-free two-photon transitions to Rydberg states in alkali metals have been recommended as a potential source of reference lines or secondary standards for wavelength calibration, because they cover a wide range of the visible spectrum.1 Observation of spectral lines for the two-photon transitions was made possible by use of a thermionic diode detector cell similar to that originally designed by Harvey.2 The Pyrex cell enclosing the diode detector and containing natural Rb was placed in a two-chamber oven so that the temperature of the cell body and that of the sidearm Rb supply could be controlled independently.

Spectroscopy of rubidium Rydberg states with three diode lasers

Pierre Thoumany, Th. Germann, Theodor W. Hänsch +3 more

This paper presents a new method of purely optical spectroscopy of rubidium Rydberg states in a room-temperature gas cell. The atoms are excited into the Rydberg state from the ground state with a three-step diode laser cascade setup. The excitation of Rydberg states is monitored by observing the absorption of the laser performing the first excitation step on the strong rubidium D2 line. Different polarization schemes and possible excitation geometries are discussed.

Two-photon spectra of neutral Barium in high-lying states

Dong-Sheng Ding

Barium atoms pumped by a dye laser can absorb two photons and transit to high-lying states. By using a heat diode to detect ionization signals, we obtained three even-parity Rydberg series 6 ns 1S0(n=11~46), 6snd 1D2(n =9~60) and 6snd3D2 (n=10~28), as well as five perturbing levels 5d833D2, 5d83, 5d8s 1d2,5d7d 3F2, 5d7d3 P0 and 5d7d 1D2. The Lu-Fano plot is used in our discussion.

Interseries interaction in bound states

Thomas F. Gallagher

Perturbed Rydberg series One of the most intensively studied manifestations of channel interaction in the bound states is the perturbation of the regularity of the Rydberg series, which is evident if one simply measures the energies of the atomic states. Although measurements of Rydberg energy levels by classical absorption spectroscopy show the perturbations in the series which are optically accessible from the ground state, the tunable laser has made it possible to study series which are not connected to the ground state by electric dipole transitions as well. One of the approaches which has been used widely is that used by Armstrong et al . As shown in Fig. 22.1, a heat pipe oven contains Ba vapor at a pressure of ∼1 Torr. Three pulsed tunable dye laser beams pass through the oven. Two are fixed in frequency, to excite the Ba atoms from the ground 6s 2 1 S o state to the 3 P 1 state and then to the 6s7s 3 S 1 state. The third laser is scanned in frequency over the 6s7s 3 S 1 → 6s n p transitions. The Ba atoms excited to the 6s n p states are ionized either by collisional ionization or by the absorption of another photon. The ions produced migrate towards a negatively biased electrode inside the heat pipe. The electrode has a space charge cloud of electrons near it which limits the emission current.

Effects of Temperature and Buffer Gas Pressure on Single Photon Degenerate Four-wave Mixing

Sun Jiang

In order to study the Rydberg state of Barium atom, single photon resonant degenerate four-wave mixing(FWM)was used to measure the 6s6p1P1 energy level of Barium atom, and FWM specture signal under different experimental conditions were achieved. The results showed that the influence of temperature and laser intensity on FWM are relatively obvious but the buffer gas pressure is relatively poor. These results may serve as a useful reference in further research work on the Rydberg state of Barium atom.
