Abstract

Within the framework of the compact density matrix approach and an iterative method, the refractive indexes changed for asymmetrical quantum well are investigated. Finally, the numerical results are p resented for a typical GaAs/AlGaAs asymmetric quantum well. The larger refractive indexes changed was obtained in this special quantum well. This is a feasible way to get fine nonlinear materials in experiment.

Linear and Nonlinear Intersubband Refractive Index Changes in Asymmetric Coupled Quantum Wells

Bin Chen, Kangxian Guo, Ruizhen Wang +2 more

Linear, nonlinear, and total refractive index changes are investigated theoretically in asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The analytical expressions for the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive index changes are obtained based on the density matrix method and the iterative approach. Numerical calculations are performed for typical GaAs/Al(subscript x)Ga(subscript 1-x)As asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The calculated results reveal that a large variation of the refractive index near the transition energy can be obtained in asymmetric coupled quantum wells, and that the incident optical intensity and the structure parameters, such as the barrier width and the right-well width, have great effects on the total refractive index changes.

Guanghui Wang, Qi Guo, Kangxian Guo

The refractive index changes near the absorption edge in semiparabolic quantum wells are examined as a function of the incident optical intensity, and an analytic formula for the changes in the refractive index is obtained by using the compact-density matrix approach and an iterative method. Numerical results are presented for some typical AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The calculated results show that the incident optical intensity and the semiparabolic confinement frequency have a great influence on the total refractive index changes.

Effect of structural and field parameters on optical refractive index changes in an asymmetric GaAs/AlGaAs three-step quantum well

Meilin Hu, S. Amoruso, Jianhui Yuan +2 more

The effective mass envelope function and diagonalization methods are used to obtain the sub-band energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the structure. Then, the nonlinear refractive index changes of the structure are approximated by the compact density matrix. Hereafter, the structural parameters of the quantum well and the external electromagnetic field are adjusted to maximize the refractive index change response, whereas the dipole matrix elements are regulated according to the degree of energy separation between the wave functions, aiming to improve the optical performance and clarify the value of parameter adjustment. Our findings can be of interest in parameter design and experimental applications of optoelectronic devices for the selection of the more appropriate nonlinear optical configuration.
