Abstract

The linear, nonlinear and total refractive index changes are investigated theoretically in asymmetric double triangular quantum wells. The analytical expressions for the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive index changes are obtained based on the density matrix method and the iterative approach.Numerical calculations are performed for typical GaAs/AlxGa1-xAs asymmetric double triangular quantum wells. The calculated results reveal that a great change of the refractive index can be obtained in the asymmetric coupled quantum wells, and that the incident optical intensity, the structure parameters, and the applied electric field have a great influence on the total refractive index changes.

Linear, nonlinear, and total refractive index changes are investigated theoretically in asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The analytical expressions for the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive index changes are obtained based on the density matrix method and the iterative approach. Numerical calculations are performed for typical GaAs/Al(subscript x)Ga(subscript 1-x)As asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The calculated results reveal that a large variation of the refractive index near the transition energy can be obtained in asymmetric coupled quantum wells, and that the incident optical intensity and the structure parameters, such as the barrier width and the right-well width, have great effects on the total refractive index changes.

Nonlinear optical properties in AlGaAs/GaAs symmetric coupled quantum wells

Ruixia Ti, Chaoyang Wang, Guanghui Wang

Based on the density matrix approach and iterative method, we calculated the analytic forms of linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes for symmetric coupled quantum wells (SCQWs) considering a two-level system, and gave the corresponding numerical results. The calculated results show that the optical properties of SCQWs are significantly better than those of asymmetrically coupled quantum wells, and the optical absorption coefficient and refractive index change are affected by the structure parameters of the SCQWs and the incident optical intensity. Their physical mechanisms are elucidated.

Linear and Nonlinear Refractive Index Changes in Pöschl-Teller Well

Peng Tan, Hong Lu

Analytical expressions of linear and third-order nonlinear optical refractive index changes are obtained in Poschl-Teller well using the density matrix formalism taking into account the intrasubband relaxation. Since there are two adjustable parameters κ and λ in the Poschl-Teller well, the shape of the wells will change with the change of the parameters κ and λ, accordingly the linear and the third-order nonlinear refractive index will change with the parameters κ and λ. It is shown that the refractive index changes depends on the shape of the well, the tunnel bandwidth and the optical power. Numerical results are presented for a typical GaAs/AlGaAs Poschl-Teller well.

Calculation of Linear and Nonlinear Intersubband Optical Absorption in Electric-field Biased Hyperbolic Quantum Wells

Libing Chen

The analytic forms of the linear and the third-order nonlinear optical intersubband absorption coefficients were obtained for general asymmetric quantum well systems using the density matrix formalism.Based on the model, the linear and the third-order nonlinear intersubband optical absorptions in electric-field biased hyperbolic quantum wells were studied. The numerical results were presented for a typical AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs electric-field biased hyperbolic quantum wells. The results show that the contributors to the nonlinear absorption coefficient are due to the electric field, the shape of quantum well and the optical intensity.

EFFECTS OF APPLIED ELECTRIC FIELDS ON LINEAR AND NONLINEAR INTERSUBBAND REFRACTIVE INDEX CHANGES IN SEMI-PARABOLIC QUANTUM WELLS

Zhang Li

By using the compact density matrix approach and displacement harmonic variant and numerical calculation methods, the linear and nonlinear intersubband refractive index changes(RICs) in a semi-parabolic quantum well with applied electric field were investigated in detail.Numerical calculations on GaAs were performed for the dependence of RIC on the incident optical intensity, the frequency of confined potential of the semi-parabolic quantum well and the strength of applied electric field. Results reveal that the RICs in the semi-parabolic quantum well system sensitively depend on these factors.

Investigation on nonlinear optical properties of symmetric and asymmetric double V-shaped AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs potential wells with structural parameters and external electromagnetic fields

Aysevil Salman Durmuşlar

Linear, nonlinear and total optical absorption coefficients and relative refractive index changes for symmetric and asymmetric double V-shaped quantum well configurations formed within AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs heterostructure have been theoretically investigated. Responses of these coefficients to well widths, barrier widths and aluminium concentrations within the barrier as well as applied external electromagnetic fields were the subject of this study. The electronic spectra of the structures are obtained as a solution to the Schrödinger equation with relevant potential and external agents in the framework of effective mass and envelope wave function approximations. The optical properties are calculated by the analytical expressions obtained by iterative solutions within the compact density matrix approach. Although increasing barrier width and aluminium concentration act similarly significant red shifting on the referred coefficients for both symmetric and asymmetric double V-shaped wells, the varying well widths act differently for each configuration. Strengthening electric and magnetic fields shift the resonance peaks to blue for both symmetric and asymmetric wells. The results show that optical properties can be controlled by structural parameters, external probes and asymmetry of double V-shaped wells.
