TIME DEPENDENCE OF THE GAIN OF AN OPTICALLY PUMPED SOLUTION OF RHODAMINE 6G

Abstract

The time dependence of the gain of an ethanol solution of rhodamine 6G was determined during excitation with conventional lamps producing pulses of 80 μsec duration. The gain maximum was reached much earlier than the maximum of the excitation pulse. It was demonstrated experimentally that because of insufficient chemical purity of the solution, the gain was replaced by a reversible absorption due to an increase in the singlet-triplet conversion probability.

Optical phase conjugation in aqueous rhodamine 6G solutions and in rhodamine 6G embedded in polyvinyl alcohol films

Claire O'neill, Valérie Blanchet, Marguerite-Marie Denariez +1 more

Studies on optical phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in aqueous rhodamine 6G solutions and in rhodamine 6G embedded in polyvinyl alcohol thin films are presented. The experiments were performed at 532 nm using picosecond pulses. Strong nonlinearities were observed in both media for three different polarization configurations of the incoming beams. The time dependence of the signals was also studied and was similar in both media. The decay kinetics in each case reflects the competition between two different processes: a fast one related to the relaxation of the anisotropic absorption and a slower one associated with the decay of the stable S1 state.

Spectrally resolved photon-echo spectroscopy of Rhodamine-6G.

Ajitesh Kumar, S. K. Karthick, Debabrata Goswami

Wavelength dependent study of a laser dye: Rhodamine-6G (Rh6G) by using spectrally resolved photon-echo spectroscopy is presented. The coherence and population dynamics of Rh6G solution in methanol changes as the excitation wavelength is tuned near its absorption maxima of 528 nm. Specifically, the central wavelength of the femtosecond laser pulse was set to 535 nm and to 560 nm while the respective spectra of the photon-echo signals were collected. This gives information on how the ultrafast dynamics of the Rh6G molecule changes with a change in the excitation wavelength.

High-reflectivity four-wave mixing by saturable gain in Rhodamine 6G dye

P. J. Soan, Antony D. Case, Michael J. Damzen +1 more

Four-wave mixing in a saturated gain medium has been modeled numerically, and the predictions for the reflectivity have been compared with experiments carried out in the laser-pumped dye Rhodamine 6G. It is demonstrated that the saturable absorption of the inversion laser pump has a dramatic influence on the intensity dependence of the four-wave-mixing reflectivity.

Collective spontaneous emission of dye molecules and lasing

V. P. Klochkov, E. B. Verkhovskiĭ

The threshold pump power density for lasing in dye solutions is found to depend on the photon energy of pumping radiation. An increase in the pumping photon energy can significantly lower the threshold pump power of dye lasers. For an ethanol solution of rhodamine 6G with a concentration of 4×10 18 cm −3 , the threshold power density for pumping radiation with a wavelength of 532 nm is 20-fold higher than for pumping radiation with a wavelength of 347 nm. This phenomenon is associated with the competition of collective spontaneous emission, which can lead to the efficient deactivation of excited molecules in femtosecond times, and the dephasing of excited molecules due to the intramolecular nonradiative processes of absorbed-energy conversion. An increase in the dephasing rate with the increasing energy of exciting photons lowers the efficiency of collective spontaneous emission and increases the concentration of dephased excited molecules responsible for lasing.

Dynamic hologram magnification with incoherent optical pumping

Omar A. Ormachea, Alexei L. Tolstik

In the present work consideration is given to theoretical and experimental analysis of the possibilities for improving the efficiency of multiwave mixing in the process of dynamic hologram recording in solutions of complex organic compounds with additional irradiation of resonant medium at a frequency falling within the absorption band from the excited level. Three- and seven-fold increase in the diffraction efficiency has been realized in Rhodamine 6G dye for four- and six-wave missing, respectively.
