Abstract

Intermediate frequency (IF) gain bandwidth (GBW) of terahertz (THz) mixers based on superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) hot electron bolometers (HEBs) has been improved. The IF GBW has been measured by 2 different methods and same values up to 7 GHz have been obtained.

Intermediate frequency (IF) gain bandwidth (GBW) of terahertz (THz) heterodyne detectors based on superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) hot electron bolometers (HEBs) has been studied in details. Two different methods, resulting in same IF GBW value of about 3.5 GHz are reported here.

NbN hot electron bolometric mixers for terahertz receivers

M. Kroug, Serguei Cherednichenko, H. Merkel +5 more

Sensitivity and gain bandwidth measurements of phonon-cooled NbN superconducting hot-electron bolometer mixers are presented. The best receiver noise temperatures are: 700 K at 1.6 THz and 1100 K at 2.5 THz. Parylene as an antireflection coating on silicon has been investigated and used in the optics of the receiver. The dependence of the mixer gain bandwidth (GBW) on the bias voltage has been measured. Starting from low bias voltages, close to operating conditions yielding the lowest noise temperature, the GBW increases towards higher bias voltages, up to three times the initial value. The highest measured GBW is 9 GHz within the same bias range the noise temperature increases by a factor of two.

IF Gain Bandwidth of a Quasi-Optical NbN Superconducting HEB Mixer

Aiqin Cao, Ling Jiang, S. H. Chen +2 more

In this paper, the intermediate frequency (IF) gain bandwidth of a quasi-optical NbN superconducting hot-electron bolometer (HEB) mixer is investigated at 500 GHz with an IF system incorporating with a frequency down-converting scheme which is able to sweep the IF signal in a frequency range of 0.3-4 GHz. The IF gain bandwidth of the device is measured to be 1.5 GHz when it is biased at a voltage of the minimum noise temperature, and becomes larger when the bias voltage increases.

Superconducting NbN hot electron bolometer mixer at terahertz

Biaobing Jin, Jianhui Chen, Min Liang +3 more

Superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers at terahertz (THz) have been designed, fabricated and measured for applications in astronomy and cosmology. The NbN HEB mixer consists of a planar antenna and an NbN bridge connecting across the antenna's inner terminals on high-resistivity Si substrates. Double sideband (DSB) receiver noise temperatures of 698 K at 0.65 THz, 904 K at 1.6 THz, 1026 K at 2.5 THz and 1386 K at 3.1 THz have been obtained at 4.2 K without corrections and using changeable input local oscillation (LO) power to eliminate the affects of direct detection and instability of the LO power. The excess quantum noise factor beta of about 4 has been estimated using a quantum noise model.

A quasi-optical superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer has been fabricated and measured in the terahertz (THz) frequency range of 0.5~2.52 THz. A receiver noise temperature of 2000 K at 2.52 THz has been obtained for the mixer without corrections. Also, the effect of a Parylene C anti-reflection (AR) coating on the silicon (Si) lens has been studied.

Investigation of the Performance of NbN Superconducting HEB Mixers of Different Critical Temperatures

Wei Miao, Wen Zhang, Kangmin Zhou +7 more

In this paper, we investigate the critical temperature dependence of the performance of niobium nitride superconducting hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers. The input noise temperature and intermediate frequency (IF) noise bandwidth of superconducting HEB mixers of different critical temperatures Tc(between 6 and 12 K) are simulated with a hot spot model. Simulation results show that the mixer input noise temperature is the lowest at Tcapproximately equal to 7-9.5 K and the IF noise bandwidth increases with Tc. We also measure three superconducting HEB mixers of different critical temperatures (i.e., 7.5, 8.8, and 10.3 K) at 0.85 and 1.3 THz. An agreement between measurement and prediction is observed.
