Doktori dolgozatomban sokrészecskés, erősen kölcsönható, kvantummechanikailag viselkedő, nemintegrálható, periodikus rendszerek alapállapoti tulajdonságait tanulmányoztam a Hubbard-modell keretében, egzakt módszerek alkalmazásával. A vizsgálatok első szakaszában egy kvázi-egydimenziós, polifenilén típusú struktúra alapállapoti jellemzőit elemeztem, melynek polimerszerkezetét egymáshoz kapcsolt hatszög alakú cellák láncolata alakítja ki. Kutatásaim következő fázisában vizsgálataimat kétdimenziós ráccsal rendelkező nanostruktúrákra is kiterjesztettem. Elsőként a nemmágneses fématomokból (pl. arany, palládium) felépülő rendszerek nanoskálán tapasztalt ferromágneses viselkedésének mélyebb mozgatórugóit próbáltam feltárni az elméleti fizika eszközeinek segítségével. In my PhD thesis I studied the ground state properties of strongly interacting, quantum mechanically behaving, nonintegrable, periodic many-particle systems in the framework of the Hubbard model, by application of exact methods. In the first period of the examinations I analysed the ground state characteristics of a quasi-1D structure of polyphenylene type, whose polymer construction is formed by the chain of interlocked hexagon-shaped cells. In the next stage of my research I extended the investigations to nanostructures possessing two-dimensional lattice, as well. First,by means of theoretical physics I tried to reveal the deeper drivers of nanoscale ferromagnetism of systems constructed by nonmagnetic metal atoms (e.g. gold, palladium). The subject of this analysis was a nanostructure possessing two-dimensional square lattice. Then I studied the ground state features of a small-sized honeycomb-structured graphene-like system.

| We have studied the properties of low-dimensional strongly correlated systems analytically, using the renormalization group approach and the Bethe hypothesis as well as numerically with the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. We have shown that the quantum information entropy is a good quantity to study when the location of a quantum critical point or the properties of the phases have to be determined. The entropy of neighboring sites exhibits a jump or discontinuity at the transition, while oscillations in the length dependence of the entropy of finite segments indicate soft modes or the inhomogeneity of the phase. We have constructed a general model to describe the neutral-ionic transition in charge-transfer salts, and pointed out that the transition is either of first order or takes place in two steps, with an intermediate dimerized phase. We have studied the metal-insulator transition in the SU(n) symmetric generalization of the Hubbard model. We have shown that this system behaves similarly to the half-filled usual Hubbard chain if the band is 1/n-filled. The half-filled models behave differently, they are dimerized for n>2 due to the coupling of the charge and spin modes, which all become gapped. For generic fillings, Luttinger liquid behavior is found. When such chains are coupled together, Luttinger liquid behavior is still possible for appropriate choices of the couplings, but such a state cannot exist if the chains are Hubbard like.
A pályázat keretében nagy szabadsági fokú fizikai rendszerek kooperatív viselkedését vizsgáltuk rendezetlenség jelenlétében. | Within the project the cooperative behavior of physical systems with large degree of freedom is studied in the presence of disorder. We have determined the properties of singularities (phase transitions, Griffiths effects) and studied both equilibrium and nonequilibrium processes. For disordered quantum systems we have continued our studies on the use of the strong disorder renormalization group method to obtain the phase diagram and low energy excitations of different one- and two-dimensional systems. We have also obtained new results about entanglement of quantum systems and the related von Neumann entropy. For nonequilibrium systems we have studied ageing during nonequilibrium critical relaxation, as well as driven lattice gas systems in the presence of disorder. Finally, in the third field of disorder dominated classical systems we have studied phase transitions and the related geometrical problems of clusters. Our results obtained during this project have been published in 29 papers in international journals and for these we have already obtained more than 130 citations. During the project 1 PhD dissertation has been succesfully defended and two others are submitted for defence.
Eredményeim egyrészt megoldható kvantummechanikai potenciálfeladatok és azok szimmetriáinak vizsgálatával kapcsolatosak, másrészt pedig e módszertani eredmények konkrét atommagfizikai rendszerekre történő alkalmazását valósították meg. Az előbbi területen zárt alakban megadtam több egzaktul megoldható PT-szimmetrikus potenciál állapotainak pszeudo-normáját (ami a PT-szimmetrikus potenciálok hermitikus megfelelőinek előállítása szempontjából kulcsfontosságú), kiterjesztettem az egzaktul megoldható PT-szimmetrikus potenciálokat 2 és 3 térbeli dimenzióra és társszerzőimmel megnyugtatóan rendeztük a Coulomb-probléma PT-szimmetrizálásának régóta húzódó kérdését. Emellett javasoltam egy olyan eljárást, amellyel helyfüggő effektív tömeg esetén is egzaktul megoldható potenciálfeladatok generálhatók úgy, hogy a tömeg mindenhol véges és pozitív. Az alkalmazások területén atommagok alakfázisai közötti fázisátmenetek egzakt leírását adtam a hatodfokú oszcillátornak a Bohr-féle Hamilton-operátorban történö felhasználásával. Zárt alakban felírtam a fázisátmenet szempontjából lényeges állapotok hullámfüggvényét, energia-sajátértékeit és az állapotok közötti elektromágneses átmeneti valószínűségeket. A módszert alkalmaztam az E(5) kritikusponti szimmetriára jó példát mutató Ru, Pd és Cd izotópokra. Szintén tárgyaltam egy olyan szuperszimmetria-sémát, amelybe szomszédos könnyű atommagok alfa-klaszter állapotai sorolhatók. | My results concern the study of exactly solvable quantum mechanical potentials and their symmetries, as well as the application of these methodical results to nuclear physical systems. In the former field I presented in closed form the pseudo-norm for the states of several PT-symmetric potentials (a result essential in generating the Hermitian equivalents of PT-symmetric potentials), I extended exactly solvable PT-symmetric potentials to 2 and 3 spatial dimensions, and together with my co-authors settled the long lasting problem of the PT-symmetrization of the Coulomb problem. Besides these, I proposed a method by which exact solutions of position-dependent effective-mass problems can be generated such that the mass remains finite and positive everywhere. Concerning applications, I presented exact description of phase transitions between different nuclear shape phases by applying the sextic oscillator in the Bohr Hamiltonian. I gave closed expressions for the wavefunctions and energy eigenvalues of states essential from the point of view of the phase transition and also calculated electromagnetic transition probablilities between them. I applied the method to Ru, Pd and Cd isotopes that are considered to be good examples for the E(5) critical point symmetry. I also discussed a supersymmetry scheme that contains alpha cluster states of neighbouring light nuclei.
A kutatási támogatást a Budapest-Marburg nemzetközi doktori iskola két magyar PhD hallgatójának ösztöndíjára fordítottuk. A hallgatók személye a futamidő alatt tanévenként változott, így a beszámolásköteles tevékenység a doktori iskola több témáját is érinti. A ''Nemkonvencionális sűrűséghullámok'' című kutatási irány keretén belül elméleti eredményeinket kísérletekkel összevetve meggyőzően demonstráltuk számos anyag (pl. egyes magashőmérsékletű szupravezetők) esetében, hogy anomális viselkedésük (pszeudogap, termomágneses transzport) hátterében a fázisdiagrammjuk egyes tartományaiban megjelenő nemkonvencionális kondenzátum áll. A "Kvantum fázisátalakulások erősen korrelált rendszerekben" című kutatási program keretében kidolgoztuk a trion-szuperfolyadék fázisátmenet elméletét, mely a csapdázott alkáli atomok mellett releváns lehet a hadron-színszupravezető átmenet értelmezése során is. Az ''Elektron spin rezonancia szilárdtestekben'' című témakörben megállapítottuk egy erősen aluldópolt magashőmérsékletű szupravezető ötvözetről, hogy antiferromágneses fázisában a lyuk koncentráció térben inhomogén, és a polarizáció négyforgású szimmetriával rendelkezik. Végezetül a "Mágneses momentumok frusztrált rácsokon" című témakörben megvizsgáltuk egy kooperatív paramágnes alacsony energiás modelljét, és meghatároztuk a rendszer fázisdiagrammját, mely rendezett és rendezetlen tartományokkal is rendelkezik. | The grant support was used to finance the fellowships of two hungarian PhD students of the Budapest-Marburg international graduate school. During the grant period the persons supported by the fellowships changed from schoolyear to schoolyear, therefore the present report touches upon several projects of the graduate school. While working on the project ''Unconventional density waves'', we compared our theoretical results with experiments, and convincingly demonstrated that a number of materials (e.g. certain high temperature superconductors) owe their anomalous behavior (pseudogap, thermomagnetic transport) to unconventional condensates in regions of their phase diagrams. Work on the project "Quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated systems" led to the theory of the trion-superfluid phase transition, which is relevant not only to the understanding of trapped alkali atoms, but to the hadron-colorsuperconductor transition as well. Within the framework of the project ''Electron spin resonance in solids'' we have investigated a strongly underdoped high temperature superconductor compound, and determined that in its antiferromagnetic phase the hole concentration is inhomogeneous, and that the polarization has fourfold symmetry. Finally, in the project "Magnetic moments on frustrated lattices" we investigated the low energy model of a cooperative paramagnet, and determined the phase diagram of the system, containing both ordered and disordered regions.
| The goal of this proposal was to study correlated states of mesoscopic circuits under non-equilibrium conditions, on the one hand, and to search for novel exotic quantum states of tunable cold atomic systems and other correlated systems, and to characterize these states, on the other hand. Among others, the research project resulted in 11 Physical Review Letters, one Physical Review X, one Nanoscale, and 39 Physical Review publications. Eleven students were integrated into this project, and their devoted research resulted so far in 7 (awarded) student's research project (TDK), 4 BSc theses, 4 MSc theses, and 3 PhD dissertations.
Értekezésemben különböző kvantumelméleti modelleket tárgyaltam a funkcionális renormálásicsoport-módszer (RG-módszer) segítségével. A kvantált anharmonikus oszcillátor esetén a renormálási séma optimalizálásnak kérdését tanulmányoztam. Lokális potenciál közelítésben a legkisebb érzékenység elve a Litim-regulátortól kissé eltérő optimális regulátort szolgáltatott. A Caldeira–Leggett-modellben meghatároztam a szuszceptibilitás és a korrelációshossz kritikus exponensét a spektrálfüggvény Drude- és Debye-típusú levágása esetén. Azt tapasztaltam, hogy a két fajta levágás a kritikus exponensek meghatározása szempontjából egyenértékűnek tekinthető. A kétdimenziós sine-Gordon-modellt impulzusfüggő hullámfüggvény-renormálás alkalmazásával tárgyaltam. I discussed different quantum theoretical models in the framework of the functional renormalization group (RG) method in my PhD thesis. For the quantized anharmonic oscillator the question of the optimization of the renormalization scheme was investigated. I obtained that in local potential approximation the principle of minimal sensitivity leads to such regulator which is a slight modification of the Litim one. I also investigated the Caldeira-Leggett model. I considered Drude and Debye type cutoff functions and I calculated critical exponents of the susceptibility and the correlation length. I found the two types of cutoff functions to be coequal from the viewpoint of the critical exponents. The 2-dimensional sine-Gordon model with wave function renormalization inculding higher order terms in the momentum was analyzed. The model can have different ultraviolet scaling behaviour depending on the initial conditions, so the model can cease to be asymptotically safe. Considering the leading term of the wave function renormalization there is a dual correspondence between the low and the high energy scalings of the model. The bosonized model of the two dimensional quantum chromodynamics with one fermion flavour has been investigated too. The ground state of classical model is determined and found to be flat. Using the RG method it can be shown that the model has a single phase.
