Dynamical Fano-Like Interference between Rabi Oscillations and Coherent Phonons in a Semiconductor Microcavity System

Abstract

We report on dynamical interference between short-lived Rabi oscillations and long-lived coherent phonons in CuCl semiconductor microcavities resulting from the coupling between the two oscillations. The Fourier-transformed spectra of the time-domain signals obtained from semiconductor microcavities by using a pump-probe technique show that the intensity of the coherent longitudinal optical phonon of CuCl is enhanced by increasing that of the Rabi oscillation, which indicates that the coherent phonon is driven by the Rabi oscillation through the Fröhlich interaction. Moreover, as the Rabi oscillation frequency decreases upon crossing the phonon frequency, the spectral profile of the coherent phonon changes from a peak to a dip with an asymmetric structure. The continuous wavelet transformation reveals that these peak and dip structures originate from constructive and destructive interference between Rabi oscillations and coherent phonons, respectively. We demonstrate that the asymmetric spectral structures in relation to the frequency detuning are well reproduced by using a classical coupled oscillator model on the basis of dynamical Fano-like interference.

Time-resolved pump-probe signals of a continuously driven quantum dot affected by phonons

Doris E. Reiter

The interaction of a light field with a quantum-mechanical system can be studied in an optically controlled semiconductor quantum dot. When driven by a continuous light field switched on instantaneously, the quantum dot occupation performs Rabi oscillations. Unlike an atomic system, the quantum dot is coupled to phonons, which leads to a damping of the Rabi oscillations. Here we model the time-resolved probe spectra to monitor these dynamics and study the influence of phonons on the spectra. The spectra consist of up to three peaks, similar to the Mollow triplet known from quantum optics. We develop analytical equations within a rate equation model and show that they agree excellently with a numerical solution using a well established correlation expansion approach.

Highly detuned Rabi oscillations for a quantum dot in a microcavity

Alexander Carmele, Julia Kabuß, Weng W. Chow

Pronounced Rabi oscillations at large detunings are predicted for a system consisting of a semiconductor quantum dot in a microcavity. Besides an anticrossing at zero detuning, two additional anticrossings are possible at microcavity detunings of one longitudinal-optical-phonon frequency below and above the quantum-dot resonance. These phonon-assisted Rabi oscillations generally exhibit complex spectral features. The investigation is performed with a quantum-electrodynamical model, where the phonon reservoir effects are treated beyond the customary Markov, second-order Born approximation.

Exciton-Photon Dynamics in Weakly and Strongly Excited Semiconductor Microcavities

Giovanni Bongiovanni, Andrea Mura, Francesco Quochi +4 more

We report on the optical response of a semiconductor microcavity featuring a strong exciton–photon coupling. The weak excitation regime is investigated experimentally by means of time-resolved transmission and four-wave mixing experiments. The influence of electronic disorder on the coherent exciton–photon dynamics is discussed in terms of the solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. The high excitation regime is investigated by using transient sub-picosecond pump–probe experiments. Optical amplification of the probe beam (up to a factor of five), as well as a fundamental change of the optical spectra, have been found close to and above the exciton saturation density. The observed oscillations are corresponding to the Rabi frequency of the excitons in the pump field.

The formation of long-lived high-correlated states of light and polarization in high-quality semiconductor microcavity at the resonant laser excitation

A. A. Demenev, С. В. Новиков, Daniil Domaretskiy +2 more

The correlation function of radiation from a high-quality semiconductor microcavity at the resonant laser excitation demonstrates oscillations with surprisingly long-period and damping times of a nanosecond range. It was shown that the oscillations are not attributed to weak Rabi interaction between long-lived exciton states and intracavity electromagnetic field. The study of a response with high spectral resolution had revealed that the oscillations arise if a spectral position as well as a period of longitudinal laser modes is similar to modulation components of a microcavity transmission spectrum.
