Self-induced polarization plane rotation in the degenerated absorption band of FA centers in KCl crystals

Abstract

Experimental results on the self-induced polarization plane rotation (SPPR) of radiation corresponding to the degenerate absorption band of FA(Li) and FA(Na) centers in KCl crystals are reported. The SPPR at stationary conditions and the kinetics of the phenomena are investigated. Comparison of the theoretical and experimental results justified the validity of the tunneling centers resonant optical orientation theory for the SPPR by FA centers of both I- and II-typc.

Self-induced change in the polarization of high-power resonant radiation in an LiF:F2-crystal

Nikolai N Il'ichev, А. V. Kiryanov, A A Malyutin

A two-level model of absorbing centers is used to make a theoretical analysis of the propagation of cw high-power resonant radiation in an LiF: crystal. It is shown that saturation of the absorption is accompanied by a self-induced change in the polarization of the radiation that depends on the wave intensity and on the orientation of its electric vector relative to the crystallographic axes of the crystal.

Polarization Holograms In Alkali Halides With F A -Centers

A. M. Shpak, Sergey A. Boiko, Georgey G. Tarasov

The effect of the polarization self-action of resonant radiation on the holographic storage as well as the holographic reconstruction is investigated in alkali halides with reorienting impurities. The polarization preserving phase conjugation is observed under the degenerate four-wave mixing for KC1 containing FA(Li) centers.

Rotation of the Plane of Polarization of a Pulse Undergoing Self-Induced Transparency

B. D. Silverman, James C. Suits

The rotation of the plane of polarization during the propagation of a pulse undergoing self-induced transparency is reinvestigated. The rotation per unit length, which is constant along the pulse, is shown to be exactly equal to the linear result obtained far out on the trailing edge of the hyperbolic-secant pulse. If the two circular components have their center frequencies shifted with respect to each other, it is pointed out that the rotation will not be stationary in the laboratory frame, but will propagate with a characteristic velocity. The existence of such propagation of a plane of polarization could be useful to test experimentally the existence of frequency pulling.

Threshold-free optical bistability due to giant nonlinearity of resonance absorption in crystals containingFAcenters

M. I. Dykman, Georgiy G. Tarasov

An analysis is made of a polarization optical bistability in crystals containing FA centers and placed in a resonator. The bistability is due to the possibility of amplification of fluctuations of the polarization of radiation in such crystals and in practice has no threshold in respect of the radiation intensity. An analysis is made of the ranges of values of the parameters of a doped crystal and of a resonator in which this bistability can be observed. The analysis is carried out for ring and Fabry–Perot resonators.

Nonlinear optical phenomena in resonant media

С. А. Бахрамов

The resonant self-induced optical activity (SIOA) in an atomic alkaline metal vapors has been investigated for the first time. Data on optical polarization rotation are presented and interpreted in terms of the resonance behavior of the third order susceptibility and finite elliptical polarization of real lasers. The limiting action of SIOA on the efficiency of resonance parametric generators and polarization spectroscopy is outlined. The observation of a nonlinear resonant self- induced of the laser beam polarization rotation in ruby crystal (Al2O3:Cr3+) at the laser transition are reported.

Effect of Optical Feedback on Self‐Induced Change of Light Polarization in Cubic Crystals with Directions Instable for Polarization

A. Brodin, Sergey A. Boiko, Mykhailo Ya. Valakh +1 more

Abstract Polarization optical bistability (POB) in crystals with FA‐centers mounted into a Fabry‐Perrot cavity is analysed. This type of optical bistability is caused by amplification of fluctuations of light polarization in crystals under consideration and has no threshold on radiation intensity. The range of parameters is found for impure crystals and cavity under POB conditions.
