Nonlinear optical phenomena in resonant media

Abstract

The resonant self-induced optical activity (SIOA) in an atomic alkaline metal vapors has been investigated for the first time. Data on optical polarization rotation are presented and interpreted in terms of the resonance behavior of the third order susceptibility and finite elliptical polarization of real lasers. The limiting action of SIOA on the efficiency of resonance parametric generators and polarization spectroscopy is outlined. The observation of a nonlinear resonant self- induced of the laser beam polarization rotation in ruby crystal (Al2O3:Cr3+) at the laser transition are reported.

Self-induced polarization effects in gases

The one‐photon effect of the resonance self‐induced optical activity (SIOA) in a atomic rubidium vapour has been experimentally investigated for the first time. Data on optical polarization rotation are presented and interpreted in terms of the resonance behavior of the third order susceptibility and finite elliptical polarization of real lasers. The limitations introduced by SIOA on the sensitivity of polarization spectroscopy is also discussed.

Induced autoionization-like resonances in nonlinear third- and fifth-order susceptibilities of sodium vapor

Stefan Dimov, Lubomir I. Pavlov, Yu. I. Geller +1 more

A study was made of the influence of autoionization-like resonances in the continuum, induced by strong optical radiation, on the nonlinear susceptibilities governing third harmonic generation and the optical activity of sodium vapor. It was demonstrated experimentally for the first time that it should be possible to study high-lying states of atoms and molecules by the method of nonlinear polarization spectroscopy of the fifth-order optical nonlinearity. The experimental results were compared with the theory. An analysis was made of the feasibility of using this effect for spectroscopy of the states in the continuum and for generation of short-wavelength radiation in gaseous media.

Spectroscopy of laser-induced autoionizing nonlinear resonances in atomic systems

Lubomir I. Pavlov, V V Kovachev

Efficient harmonic generation at laser-induced autoionizing state in continuum, were observed for the first time by our laboratory [1,2,3]. In this paper, nonlinear frequency mixing in alkali metal vapors at induced continuum structure in Na, are studied in detail. Besides, measurement of nonlinear optical susceptibility at induced autoionizing resonance, is performed. Tunable ultraviolet radiations by four-photon processes near induced resonances are obtained. Estimations of the real and imaginary parts of the nonlinearities, are estimated. We will specially note, that the resonant photoabsorption of ions is experimentally investigated since it gives information about the autoionizing states, which is impossible to obtain on the base only of the emission spectra. We use also laser inducing for obtaining of powerful radiation source in VUV. Thus, many actual problems as the selective impact on matter, laser photochemistry and laser isotope separation are connected directly with the induced autoionizing nonlinear resonances. The main interest is to control the spectral characteristics of continuum. The discrete level from the continuum structure leads to appearance of asymmetrical autoionizing resonance onto the background of the broad-band absorption line.

Nonlinear precession of the polarization ellipse in resonant atomic media: two-level systems and Rb

Summary form only given. Self-rotation (SR) of the polarization ellipse upon propagation through a nonlinear medium was among the first nonlinear optics phenomena observed. SR in resonant atomic vapors has been the subject of several theoretical and experimental studies. We describe SR in two-level F/spl rarr/F' systems (F, F' are the total angular momenta of the lower and the upper state) and present experiments and theoretical interpretation (based on density matrix calculations) of SR on the Rb D/sub 1,2/ lines.

Observation of the Strong Magneto-Optical Rotation of the Polarization of Light in Rubidium Vapor for Applications in Atomic Magnetometry

A. O. Makarov, Denis V. Brazhnikov, Andrei Goncharov

Nonlinear resonances in alkali metal vapor, which are detected by the magneto-optical rotation of the linear polarization of light, are actively used in quantum magnetometry to fabricate atomic magnetometers. The magneto-optical rotation in most such sensors is due to magnetic birefringence, and rotation angles usually do not exceed tens of milliradians. In this work, an experiment where magneto-optical resonances of linear polarization rotation of a probe wave are due to strong dichroism induced in a medium by a counterpropagating pump wave has been proposed. Both waves are in resonance with the Fg = 2 → Fe = 1 optical transition in the 87Rb D1 line (λ ≈ 795 nm). Experiments have been carried out with a 2-cm-long cylindrical cell filled with a buffer gas, and the maximum rotation angle is ≈390 mrad (22°) at a width of resonance of about 300 nT. The results show that the configuration proposed for the observation of magneto-optical rotation is promising for the fabrication of compact high-sensitivity atomic magnetometers.
