Abstract

Summary form only given. Self-rotation (SR) of the polarization ellipse upon propagation through a nonlinear medium was among the first nonlinear optics phenomena observed. SR in resonant atomic vapors has been the subject of several theoretical and experimental studies. We describe SR in two-level F/spl rarr/F' systems (F, F' are the total angular momenta of the lower and the upper state) and present experiments and theoretical interpretation (based on density matrix calculations) of SR on the Rb D/sub 1,2/ lines.

Self-rotation of resonant elliptically polarized light in collision-free rubidium vapor

Simon Rochester, D. S. Hsiung, Dmitry Budker +3 more

Self-rotation (SR) of elliptically polarized light resonant with atoms in a collision-free vapor is investigated experimentally and theoretically. Results of density matrix calculations are compared to measurements of SR on the Rb $D1$ and $D2$ lines. It is noted that SR effects involving individual hyperfine transitions are suppressed due to Doppler broadening, and so previously unrecognized effects arising from the interaction of light with multiple hyperfine transitions can become dominant.

Nonlinear optical phenomena in resonant media

С. А. Бахрамов

The resonant self-induced optical activity (SIOA) in an atomic alkaline metal vapors has been investigated for the first time. Data on optical polarization rotation are presented and interpreted in terms of the resonance behavior of the third order susceptibility and finite elliptical polarization of real lasers. The limiting action of SIOA on the efficiency of resonance parametric generators and polarization spectroscopy is outlined. The observation of a nonlinear resonant self- induced of the laser beam polarization rotation in ruby crystal (Al2O3:Cr3+) at the laser transition are reported.

Polarization-ellipse rotation by induced gyrotropy in atomic vapors

William V. Davis, Alexander L. Gaeta, Robert W. Boyd

We study theoretically and experimentally a new mechanism for the rotation of the polarization ellipse of a single laser beam propagating through an atomic vapor with a frequency tuned near an atomic resonance. The results of a theoretical treatment for the case of a J = (1/2) to J = (1/2) atomic transition show that a rotation of the polarization ellipse of the laser beam will occur as a result of ground-state optical pumping and that the angle of rotation is independent of the laser intensity over a broad range of laser intensities. The predictions of this theoretical model are tested experimentally through the use of potassium vapor and are found to agree with the experimental data.

We present an experimental and theoretical study of self-rotation of optical polarization in a rubidium vapor. The atomic vapor is placed in a magnetic shielding cavity to suppress the Faraday rotation effect. In our experiment, Doppler-free spectroscopy configuration is used, and F = 2 → F = 3 transition of 87 Rb D2 line is chosen. We observe self-rotation of optical polarization effect at different pump light ellipticities.A theoretical analysis is then provided based on the experimental conditions.Theoretical simulation and experimental results are in good agreement.

Polarization rotation spectral profiles for the D2 line of 87 Rb atoms: theory and experiment

Geol Moon, Seung-Chul Yang, Jin‐Tae Kim +1 more

Abstract We present a theoretical and experimental study of the polarization rotation of a linearly polarized probe beam scanning across all of the neighboring hyperfine levels ( F e = 1 and 2) with a circularly polarized pumping beam resonant on the F g = 2 → F e = 3 transition of the D2 line of 87 Rb atoms. The experimental results match well with the results calculated from the full-level density matrix equations considering laser phase noise, which hinders observations of narrow lines with linewidths of ∼90 kHz, as calculated in polarization rotation spectra for the first time.

Vacuum squeezing in atomic media via self-rotation

Andrey B. Matsko, Irina V. Novikova, George R. Welch +3 more

When linearly polarized light propagates through a medium in which elliptically polarized light would undergo self-rotation, squeezed vacuum can appear in the orthogonal polarization. A simple relationship between self-rotation and the degree of vacuum squeezing is developed. Taking into account absorption, we find the optimum conditions for squeezing in any medium that can produce self-rotation. We then find analytic expressions for the amount of vacuum squeezing produced by an atomic vapor when light is near-resonant with a transition between various low-angular-momentum states. Finally, we consider a gas of multilevel Rb atoms, and analyze squeezing for light tuned near the D lines under realistic conditions.
