Abstract

The effect of the polarization self-action of resonant radiation on the holographic storage as well as the holographic reconstruction is investigated in alkali halides with reorienting impurities. The polarization preserving phase conjugation is observed under the degenerate four-wave mixing for KC1 containing FA(Li) centers.

Observation of resonantly enhanced degenerate four-wave mixing in doped alkali halides

David E. Watkins, Joseph F. Figueira, Stewart J. Thomas

We describe the first reported observation of resonantly enhanced phase conjugation through degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) in doped alkali halides. We also describe the first reported quantitative comparison of the resonant DFWM process in the infrared with the theory of Abrams and Lind [Opt. Lett. 2, 94 (1978); 3, 205 (1978)]. The comparison for small values of alpha0L is shown to be excellent. For alpha0L in excess of 3, experiment and theory diverge because of pump attenuation by the resonant medium.

Self-induced polarization plane rotation in the degenerated absorption band of FA centers in KCl crystals

G. Yu. Rudko, V. I. Sidorenko, V. P. Svirgun

Experimental results on the self-induced polarization plane rotation (SPPR) of radiation corresponding to the degenerate absorption band of FA(Li) and FA(Na) centers in KCl crystals are reported. The SPPR at stationary conditions and the kinetics of the phenomena are investigated. Comparison of the theoretical and experimental results justified the validity of the tunneling centers resonant optical orientation theory for the SPPR by FA centers of both I- and II-typc.

Parametric Investigation of Holographic Gratings and Optical Phase Conjugation Through Degenerate Four Wave Mixing in Saturable Absorptive/Resonant/Nonresonant Systems

Putcha Venkateswarlu

Parametric investigation of volume holographic gratings and optical phase conjugation are studied through coherent and incoherent beam couplings in barium titanate BaTiO(3) and through the study of bistability in phase conjugate resonators. Experiments have been done on the effect of color centers in the formation of resonant systems and holographic grating formation. A summary of the important results appears in the final report.

Effect of polarization self-action in cubic crystals: peculiarities and applications

Sergei A. Boiko, Mikhail P. Lisitsa, Georgiy G. Tarasov +1 more

New concepts are developed to describe a wide area of nonlinear systems involving the phase relaxation peculiarities for the degenerate two-level system under the resonant optical excitation. Nonlinear susceptibility of the two-level system becomes anisotropic, and self-induced changes of polarization (SICP) are developed to the large (gigantic) magnitudes. The nonlinearities of two different natures are considered: the saturation of absorption and the resonant optical reorientation of anisotropic defects. For these particular cases, the SICP effects manifest themselves at a field much lower than that in traditional nonlinear optics. The larger magnitudes of the effects offer good possibilities for the development of optical devices based on the new physical principles. Various applications of SlOP effects are demonstrated, including the spectroscopic investigations of impure cubic crystals, optical diagnostics, optical storage, information processing, and the development of new optical devices.

Polarization properties of phase conjugation utilizing atomic two-photon resonances

It is often desirable that a phase conjugate mirror be able to correct for polarization distortions in addition to correcting for wavefront aberrations. Such a device is called a vector phase conjugate mirror. It has been predicted within the context of the third-order theory that vector phase conjugation can be achieved by degenerate four-wave mixing using atomic two-photon transitions between S-states.1 We recently developed a theory of the polarization properties of two-photon resonantly enhanced degenerate four-wave mixing which can treat saturation effects due to pump waves.2 Our results show that for the case of linear and parallel pump wave polarizations, vector phase conjugation occurs with high quality and high reflectivity for two-photon transitions for which the nonresonant Stark shift is very small. We have also found that for the case of circular and counterrotating pump wave polarizations, perfect vector phase conjugation occurs for equal pump wave intensities. We have studied experimentally the effects of saturation and Stark shifts for S → S two-photon transitions of atomic sodium. We have found that high fidelity vector phase conjugation can be obtained.
