Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate superluminal optical solitons in a four-level atomic system with two control fields via an active Raman gain. We derive a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation with high-order corrections contributed from linear and differential absorption, nonlinear dispersion, and delay response of nonlinear refractive index of the system. We predict various optical solitons in different regimes of system parameters, and show that these optical solitons have superluminal propagating velocity and very low generation power.

High-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation and superluminal optical solitons in room-temperature active-Raman-gain media

Hui‐jun Li, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

We make a detailed study on the dynamics of gain-assisted superluminal optical solitons in a three-state active-Raman-gain medium at room temperature. Using a method of multiple-scales we derive a high-order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with correction terms contributed from differential gain, nonlinear dispersion, delay in nonlinear refractive index, and third-order dispersion of the system. We show that for a long pulse with realistic physical parameters the high-order correction terms are small and can be taken as perturbations. However, for a shorter pulse these higher-order correction terms are significant and hence must be treated on equal footing as the terms in the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We provide exact soliton solutions of the higher-order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and demonstrate that such solitons have still superluminal propagating velocity and can be generated at very low light intensity.

Giant Kerr nonlinearity and weak-light superluminal optical solitons in a four-state atomic system with gain doublet

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We consider an active-Raman-gain scheme for realizing giant Kerr nonlinearity and superluminal optical solitons in a four-state atomic system with a gain doublet. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from those based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), is capable of working at room temperature and eliminating nearly all attenuation and distortion. We demonstrate that, due to the appearance of a gain spectrum hole induced by the quantum interference effect induced by a signal field, a significant enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity of probe field can be realized effectively, which can be more than ten times larger than that arrived by the EIT-based scheme with the same energy-level configuration. Based on these important features, we obtain a giant cross-phase modulation effect and hence a stable long-distance propagation of optical solitons, which have superluminal propagating velocity and very low generating power.

(3+1)-dimensional superluminal spatiotemporal optical solitons and vortices at weak light level

Hui‐jun Li, Yuan-po Wu, Chao Hang +1 more

A scheme is proposed to produce (3+1)-dimensional superluminal spatiotemporal optical solitons and vortices in a coherent atomic system working in an active Raman gain regime. It is shown that the evolution of the envelope of a signal field obeys a modified (3+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, which includes dispersion, diffraction, and Kerr nonlinearity. Various solutions of light bullets, light vortices, light-bullet trains, and light-vortex trains are presented, which display many interesting characters, including superluminal propagating velocity and extremely low generating power. In addition, they can be easily manipulated in a controllable way. Stabilization of such high-dimensional superluminal light bullets and vortices can be realized using the trapping potential formed by an additional far-detuned laser field.

Superluminal optical vector solitons in a five-level M-type atomic system

Bin Li, Yihong Qi, Yueping Niu +1 more

We investigate generation of superluminal vector optical solitons in a five-level M-type atomic system within active-Raman-gain regime. By analyzing the linear and nonlinear optical properties of the system, we demonstrate that the dispersion effects of the probe fields can be well balanced by self-phase and cross-phase modulation of the Kerr nonlinearity and various types of optical vector solitons with superluminal group velocity can be formed in the system. Moreover, by choosing proper parameters Manakov temporal vector solitons can also be realized in this atomic system.

Three-wave superluminal vector optical solitons in a seven-level atomic system

Bin Li, Yihong Qi, Yueping Niu +1 more

We investigate generation of three-wave coupled superluminal vector optical solitons in an active-Raman-gain (ARG) seven-level atomic system. By solving the probability amplitude equations, the linear, nonlinear and dispersion of the optical properties are analyzed for the three probe fields, which show that the dispersion effects of the probe fields can be well balanced by self-phase and cross-phase modulation of the Kerr nonlinearities and the gain can be well suppressed under certain conditions. Therefore, three-wave coupled optical vector solitons with superluminal propagating group velocity can be formed in the system. Moreover, this atomic system allows the existence of various types of three-wave superluminal vector solitons by adjusting the system parameters. We also give real parameters of 87Rb atoms for generating three-wave superluminal vector solitons, which may provide reference for experiments.

Generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and ultraslow optical solitons in a cold four-state atomic system

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang, L. Deng

We investigate the influence of high-order dispersion and nonlinearity on the propagation of ultraslow optical solitons in a lifetime broadened four-state atomic system under a Raman excitation. Using a standard method of multiple-scales we derive a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and show that for realistic physical parameters and at the pulse duration of 10(-6)s, the effects of third-order linear dispersion, nonlinear dispersion, and delay in nonlinear refractive index can be significant and may not be considered as perturbations. We provide exact soliton solutions for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation and demonstrate that optical solitons obtained may still have ultraslow propagating velocity. Numerical simulations on the stability and interaction of these ultraslow optical solitons in the presence of linear and differential absorptions are also presented.
