Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate vector optical solitons in a four-level active-Raman-gain medium. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from that using optical fibers and that via electromagnetically induced transparency, is capable of achieving robust vector optical solitons with superluminal propagating velocity. We demonstrate that such vector optical solitons can be generated at room temperature and with very low light intensity. We investigate also the interaction between two superluminal vector optical solitons and point out that their elastic and inelastic colliding properties can be used to design rapidly responding optical soliton switching and logic gates.

Giant Kerr nonlinearity and weak-light superluminal optical solitons in a four-state atomic system with gain doublet

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We consider an active-Raman-gain scheme for realizing giant Kerr nonlinearity and superluminal optical solitons in a four-state atomic system with a gain doublet. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from those based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), is capable of working at room temperature and eliminating nearly all attenuation and distortion. We demonstrate that, due to the appearance of a gain spectrum hole induced by the quantum interference effect induced by a signal field, a significant enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity of probe field can be realized effectively, which can be more than ten times larger than that arrived by the EIT-based scheme with the same energy-level configuration. Based on these important features, we obtain a giant cross-phase modulation effect and hence a stable long-distance propagation of optical solitons, which have superluminal propagating velocity and very low generating power.

Gain-assisted superluminal optical solitons at very low light intensity

Guoxiang Huang, Chao Hang, L. Deng

We show the possibility of generating gain-assisted superluminal optical solitons in a room-temperature three-state active Raman gain medium. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that under appropriate conditions a signal field of very low intensity can evolve into a stable shape-preserving wave form that propagates with superluminal velocity. Shape recovery of superluminal solitons after collision is also demonstrated numerically.

Gain-Assisted Large and Rapidly Responding Kerr Effect using a Room-Temperature Active Raman Gain Medium

L. Deng, M. G. Payne

A four-level N scheme with a two-mode active Raman gain core is investigated for large and rapidly responding Kerr effect enhancement at room temperature. The new scheme is fundamentally different from the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT-)based ultraslow-wave Kerr effect enhancement scheme. It eliminates the requirement of group velocity matching and multispecies medium. It also eliminates significant probe field attenuation or distortion associated with weakly driven EIT-based schemes. We show that a probe field can acquire a large, frequency tunable, gain-assisted nonlinear phase shift and yet travel with gain-assisted superluminal propagation velocity. This raises the possibility of rapidly responding, frequency tunable nonlinear phase switching and phase gates for information science.

High-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation and weak-light superluminal solitons in active Raman gain media with two control fields

Chengjie Zhu, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to generate superluminal optical solitons in a four-level atomic system with two control fields via an active Raman gain. We derive a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation with high-order corrections contributed from linear and differential absorption, nonlinear dispersion, and delay response of nonlinear refractive index of the system. We predict various optical solitons in different regimes of system parameters, and show that these optical solitons have superluminal propagating velocity and very low generation power.

Weak-light ultraslow vector solitons via electromagnetically induced transparency

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to generate temporal vector optical solitons in a lifetime broadened five-state atomic medium via electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from the passive one by using optical fibers, is capable of achieving distortion-free vector optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity under very weak drive conditions. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that it is easy to realize Manakov temporal vector solitons by actively manipulating the dispersion and self- and cross-phase modulation effects of the system.

High-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation and superluminal optical solitons in room-temperature active-Raman-gain media

Hui‐jun Li, Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang +1 more

We make a detailed study on the dynamics of gain-assisted superluminal optical solitons in a three-state active-Raman-gain medium at room temperature. Using a method of multiple-scales we derive a high-order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with correction terms contributed from differential gain, nonlinear dispersion, delay in nonlinear refractive index, and third-order dispersion of the system. We show that for a long pulse with realistic physical parameters the high-order correction terms are small and can be taken as perturbations. However, for a shorter pulse these higher-order correction terms are significant and hence must be treated on equal footing as the terms in the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We provide exact soliton solutions of the higher-order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and demonstrate that such solitons have still superluminal propagating velocity and can be generated at very low light intensity.
