Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate temporal vector optical solitons in a lifetime broadened five-state atomic medium via electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from the passive one by using optical fibers, is capable of achieving distortion-free vector optical solitons with ultraslow propagating velocity under very weak drive conditions. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that it is easy to realize Manakov temporal vector solitons by actively manipulating the dispersion and self- and cross-phase modulation effects of the system.

Ultraslow temporal vector optical solitons in a cold four-level tripod atomic system

Liu-Gang Si, Wen‐Xing Yang, Xiaoxue Yang

We show the possibility of generating ultraslow temporal vector optical solitons in a cold lifetime-broadened four-level tripod atomic medium under Raman excitation. We demonstrate that the two orthogonally polarized components of the low-intensity signal field can evolve into various distortion-free temporal vector optical solitons, such as bright-bright vector solitons with ultraslow group velocity. These results are produced from the balance of self- and cross-phase modulation effects and dispersion. We also show that Manakov temporal vector solitons may be realized by adjusting the corresponding self- and cross-phase modulation and dispersion effects of our system.

Ultraslow temporal vector optical solitons in a cold five-state atomic medium under Raman excitation

Liu-Gang Si, Ji-Bing Liu, Xin‐You Lü +1 more

We theoretically investigate the formation of ultraslow temporal vector optical solitons in a lifetime-broadened five-state atomic system under Raman excitation. By analysing the interaction between the atomic system and two strong, linear-polarized continuous wave control fields and a weak, linear-polarized pulsed signal field, having two orthogonally polarized components, we find that the Maxwell equations of describing the propagation of two orthogonal polarization components can evolve into two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which admit solutions describing vector solitons, including bright–bright, bright–dark, dark–bright and dark–dark vector solitons with ultraslow group velocity. More importantly, the Manakov temporal vector solitons can be easily realized in our system by adjusting the corresponding parameters such as the Rabi frequencies of the control fields, one- and two-photon detunings. The unique features of the two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations are also discussed.

Three coupled ultraslow temporal solitons in a five-level tripod atomic system

Wen‐Xing Yang, Ai-Xi Chen, Liu-Gang Si +3 more

We propose a scheme to generate three coupled ultraslow optical solitons in a five-level tripod atomic system. We show that the detrimental distortions of the three weak probe fields due to dispersion effects under weak driving conditions can be well balanced by self- and cross-phase-modulation effects, which leads to the three coupled ultraslow temporal optical solitons with the temporal, group velocity, and amplitude values nearly matched. In contrast to other schemes, our model uses optical fibers, including multichromatic optical solitons in the stimulated Raman scattering, and produces three coupled ultraslow optical solitons in a small propagation distance of less than $1$ cm with $\frac{1}{2}$ Rabi frequency of the driving field, typically less than 100 MHz.

Formation and propagation of ultraslow three-wave-vector optical solitons in a cold seven-level triple- Λ atomic system under Raman excitation

Liu-Gang Si, Wen‐Xing Yang, Xin‐You Lü +2 more

In this article, a theoretical scheme is proposed to investigate the formation and propagation of three-wave coupled vector optical solitons with ultraslow group velocities in a lifetime-broadened seven-state triple-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atomic system under Raman excitation. We show that in the presence of a weak applied magnetic field that removes the degeneracy of the corresponding sublevels of the atomic medium, three continuous-wave control fields with circularly left or right polarized fields induce a quantum interference effect which can largely suppress the absorption of the three low-intensity pulsed fields, that is, the circularly ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ (right), the linearly $\ensuremath{\pi}$, and the circularly ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}^{+}$ (left) polarized fields converted from one weak linear-polarized probe field. By means of the standard method of multiple scales, we solve the equations of motion of atomic response and probe-control electromagnetic fields and derive three-coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations that govern the nonlinear evolution of the envelopes of the probe fields in this scheme. We then demonstrate that because of the nonlinear coupling to one another, the three probe fields can evolve into three-wave temporal, group velocity, and amplitude-matched optical solitons under appropriate conditions, which are produced from the delicate balance of the dispersion effects and the self- and cross-phase modulation effects. This scheme may thus pave the way to generate ultraslow vector optical solitons composed of three field components in a highly resonant atomic medium and result in a substantial impact on this field of nonlinear optics.

Weak-light superluminal vector solitons in a room-temperature four-level active-Raman-gain medium

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to generate vector optical solitons in a four-level active-Raman-gain medium. We show that this scheme, which is fundamentally different from that using optical fibers and that via electromagnetically induced transparency, is capable of achieving robust vector optical solitons with superluminal propagating velocity. We demonstrate that such vector optical solitons can be generated at room temperature and with very low light intensity. We investigate also the interaction between two superluminal vector optical solitons and point out that their elastic and inelastic colliding properties can be used to design rapidly responding optical soliton switching and logic gates.

Stern-Gerlach effect of weak-light ultraslow vector solitons

Chao Hang, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to exhibit Stern-Gerlach deflection of high-dimensional vector optical solitons at a weak-light level in a cold atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that the propagating velocity and generation power of such solitons can be reduced to ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}c$ ($c$ is light speed in vacuum) and lowered to magnitude of nanowatt, respectively. The stabilization of the solitons is realized by using an optical lattice potential formed by a far-detuned laser field, and trajectories of them are deflected significantly by using a transversal Stern-Gerlach gradient magnetic field. Deflection angles of the solitons can be of magnitude of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ rad when propagating several millimeters. Different from atomic Stern-Gerlach deflection, deflection angles of the solitons can be distinct for different polarization components and can be manipulated in a controllable way. The result obtained can be described in terms of the Stern-Gerlach effect for vector optical solitons with quasispin and effective magnetic moment.
