Coherently controlled mesoscopic transport

Abstract

A weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate is initially situated in the first of a series of wells. Numerical calculations show that, by adding especially designed time-dependent potential modulations, the condensate can be transported through the wells in a controlled way.

Coherent control of mesoscopic tunneling in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Christoph Weiß, Tharanga Jinasundera

For a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well, an appropriate time-dependent modulation of the trapping potential counteracts the ``self-trapping'' effects of the interactions, thereby allowing tunneling between the wells. It is demonstrated numerically that this modulation can be employed for transferring the condensate from one well to the other in a controlled way. Moreover it allows the production of mesoscopic entangled states on short time scales.

Transport and coherent backscattering of Bose-Einstein condensates in mesoscopic systems

Michael Hartung

We numerically study time-dependent quantum transport of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in a two-dimensional correlated disorder potential. The scattering- and transport mean-free-path is numerically calculated and compared with a diagrammatic approach. Furthermore we introduce the phenomenon of coherent backscattering in the context of Bose-Einstein condensates. In the limit of a vanishing atom-atom interaction, a sharp cone in the angle-resolved density of the scattered matter wave is observed, arising from constructive interference between amplitudes propagating along reversed scattering paths. Weak interaction transforms this coherent backscattering peak into a pronounced dip, indicating destructive instead of constructive interference. This agrees with results obtained from a diagrammatic theory of weak localization in the presence of nonlinearity. For intermediate interaction strength we observe intrinsic time-dependent dynamic, which leads to a suppression of coherent backscattering.

Coherently controlled entanglement generation in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Niklas Teichmann, Christoph Weiß

Considering a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, a method to generate a Bell state consisting of two spatially separated condensates is suggested. For repulsive interactions, the required tunnelling control is achieved numerically by varying the amplitude of a sinusoidal potential difference between the wells. Both numerical and analytical calculations reveal the emergence of a highly entangled mesoscopic state.
