Observation of the Lorentz local-field in a dense atomic vapor using transient four-wave-mixing

Abstract

The Lorentz local-field modifies the properties of a dense medium, compared to isolated atoms. It results in the Lorentz-Lorenz shift, and a negative delay signal in transient-four- wave mixing, which we have observed in potassium vapor.

Time domain observation of the Lorentz-local field

Steven T. Cundiff

The Lorentz local field in a dense atomic vapor is observed using transient-four-wave-mixing, a time domain spectroscopic technique. The local field is manifest as a signal for "negative" delay. The strength of the negative delay signal can be related to the Lorentz--Lorenz shift using perturbation theory or numerical calculations.

Local-field enhancement of the nonlinear-optical susceptibility

We have quantitatively studied the effects of Lorentz local fields on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of an atomic potassium vapor. In the linear regime, the effects of local fields are treated theoretically by the Lorentz-Lorenz equation. The Lorentz-Lorenz equation predicts that the linear dielectric constant e for an isolated optical resonance should have a density-dependent frequency shift from that of the single-atom response toward the red end of the spectrum.

Non-Markovian dynamics in a dense potassium vapor

Virginia O. Lorenz, Steven T. Cundiff

Using transient four-wave mixing, we have observed the relaxation dynamics of a dense potassium vapor whose dephasing time is large compared to the collision duration, revealing a clear transition from non-Markovian to Markovian dynamics.

The transient four-wave mixing signal from a dense potassium vapor, which displays non-Markovian dynamics, depends on the excitation strength. Theoretical fits reveal the excitation dependence of the parameters employ ed in a two-time correlation function.

We have studied the resonant optical response of a dense atomic potassium vapor under conditions such that the response is strongly influenced by local-field effects. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions of theory. We have also discovered a collision-induced shift of the potassium resonance lines given by \ensuremath{\Delta}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\omega}}}_{\mathrm{c}\mathrm{o}\mathrm{l}=}$\ensuremath{\beta}N, where \ensuremath{\beta}=-5.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}8}$ ${\mathrm{sec}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ for the 4 $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2}$\ensuremath{\leftrightarrows}4 $^{2}$${\mathit{P}}_{1/2}$ transition and where \ensuremath{\beta}=-3.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}8}$ ${\mathrm{sec}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$ for the 4 $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2}$\ensuremath{\leftrightarrows}4 $^{2}$${\mathit{S}}_{1/2}$\ensuremath{\leftrightarrows}4 $^{2}$${\mathit{P}}_{3/2}$ transition.
