The Canonical Coherent States Associated With Quotients of the Ane Weyl-Heisenberg Group

Abstract

This paper is concerned with the uncertainty principle in the context of the ane-W eyl-Heisenberg group in one and two dimensions. As the representation of this group fails to be square integrable, we explore various admissible sections of this group, and calculate the resulting uncertainty principles as well as its minimizers with respect to these sections. Previous studies have shown that these sections give rise to mixed smoothness spaces. We demonstrate that the minimizers obtained for these sections actually interpolate between Gabor and wavelets functions.

N-Dimensional Affine Weyl-Heisenberg Wavelets

Charles Kalisa, Bruno Torrésani

: n-dimensional coherent states systems generated by translations, modulations, rotations and dilations are described. Starting from unitary irreducible representations of the n-dimen- sional affine Weyl-Heisenberg group, which are not square-integrable, one is led to consider systems of coherent states labeled by the elements of quotients of the original group. Such systems can yield a resolution of the identity, and then be used as alternatives to usual wavelet or windowed Fourier analysis. When the quotient space is the phase space of the representation, different embeddings of it into the group provide different descriptions of the phase space. Hierarchy of local minimum solutions of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle

David K. Hoffman, Donald Jack Kouri

Local minimum solutions to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle are studied in detail. Of particular concern is obtaining an optimal procedure to squeeze the uncertainty in one canonical operator while introducing, in a well-defined mathematical sense, the least possible increase in the uncertainty of the relevant conjugate operator. The result is a hierarchy of ``minimum uncertainty $(\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{-})$ wavelets,'' which are intimately associated with the ``Hermite distributed approximating functionals'' [D. K. Hoffman and D. J. Kouri, Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 5263 (2000)]. The $\ensuremath{\mu}$ wavelets can be used with any quantum state to squeeze the uncertainty of a particular observable. Several specific examples are given and some possible applications are discussed.

The Heisenberg−Weyl Algebra on the Circle and a Related Quantum Mechanical Model for Hindered Rotation

Donald Jack Kouri, Thomas Markovich, Nicholas Maxwell +1 more

We discuss a periodic variant of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, associated with the group of translations and modulations on the circle. Our study of uncertainty minimizers leads to a periodic version of canonical coherent states. Unlike the canonical, Cartesian case, there are states for which the uncertainty product associated with the generators of the algebra vanishes. Next, we explore the supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical setting for the uncertainty-minimizing states and interpret them as leading to a family of "hindered rotors". Finally, we present a standard quantum mechanical treatment of one of these hindered rotor systems, including numerically generated eigenstates and energies.

Coherent states and the role of the affine group in the quantum mechanics of the Morse potential

Bence Molnár, M. G. Benedict, J. Bertrand

The coherent states of the Morse potential that have been obtained earlier from supersymmetric quantum mechanics, are shown to be connected with the representations of the affine group of the real line and some of its extensions. This relation is similar to the one between the Heisenberg-Weyl group and the coherent states of the harmonic oscillator. The states that minimize the uncertainty product of the generators of the affine Lie algebra are shown to contain all the coherent states of the Morse oscillator plus the intelligent states of the Morse Hamiltonians with different shape parameter s . The representations of the central extension of the affine group denoted by G 0 and its further extension will be shown to define the phase space relevant to the problem by choosing an appropriate orbit of the coadjoint representation of . This allows one to construct a generalized Wigner function on this phase space, which is again essentially in the same relation with the affine group, as the ordinary Wigner function with the Heisenberg-Weyl group.

A Metaplectic Perspective of Uncertainty Principles in the Linear Canonical Transform Domain

Nuno Costa Dias, Maurice A. de Gosson, João Nuno Prata

We derive Heisenberg uncertainty principles for pairs of Linear Canonical Transforms of a given function, by resorting to the fact that these transforms are just metaplectic operators associated with free symplectic matrices. The results obtained synthesize and generalize previous results found in the literature, because they apply to all signals, in arbitrary dimension and any metaplectic operator (which includes Linear Canonical Transforms as particular cases). Moreover, we also obtain a generalization of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle for Linear Canonical Transforms. We also propose a new quadratic phase-space distribution, which represents a signal along two intermediate directions in the time-frequency plane. The marginal distributions are always non-negative and permit a simple interpretation in terms of the Radon transform. We also give a geometric interpretation of this quadratic phase-space representation as a Wigner distribution obtained upon Weyl quantization on a non-standard symplectic vector space. Finally, we derive the multidimensional version of the Hardy uncertainty principle for metaplectic operators and the Paley-Wiener theorem for Linear Canonical Transforms.

On Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and the CCR

Reinhard Honegger

Abstract Realizing the canonical commutation relations (CCR) [N, Θ] = - i as N = - i d/dϑ and Θ to be the multiplication by ϑ on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on [0, 2π], in the physical literature there seems to be some contradictions concerning the Heisenberg uncertainty principle ⟨ΔN⟨ ⟨ΔΘ⟨ ≥ 1/4. The difficulties may be overcome by a rigorous mathematical analysis of the domain of state vectors, for which Heisenberg's inequality is valid. It is shown that the exponentials exp {i t N} and exp{i sΘ} satisfy some commutation relations, which are not the Weyl relations. Finally, the present work aims at a better understanding of the phase and number operators in non-Fock representations.
