The Heisenberg−Weyl Algebra on the Circle and a Related Quantum Mechanical Model for Hindered Rotation

Abstract

We discuss a periodic variant of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra, associated with the group of translations and modulations on the circle. Our study of uncertainty minimizers leads to a periodic version of canonical coherent states. Unlike the canonical, Cartesian case, there are states for which the uncertainty product associated with the generators of the algebra vanishes. Next, we explore the supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical setting for the uncertainty-minimizing states and interpret them as leading to a family of "hindered rotors". Finally, we present a standard quantum mechanical treatment of one of these hindered rotor systems, including numerically generated eigenstates and energies.

Coherent states and the role of the affine group in the quantum mechanics of the Morse potential

Bence Molnár, M. G. Benedict, J. Bertrand

The coherent states of the Morse potential that have been obtained earlier from supersymmetric quantum mechanics, are shown to be connected with the representations of the affine group of the real line and some of its extensions. This relation is similar to the one between the Heisenberg-Weyl group and the coherent states of the harmonic oscillator. The states that minimize the uncertainty product of the generators of the affine Lie algebra are shown to contain all the coherent states of the Morse oscillator plus the intelligent states of the Morse Hamiltonians with different shape parameter s . The representations of the central extension of the affine group denoted by G 0 and its further extension will be shown to define the phase space relevant to the problem by choosing an appropriate orbit of the coadjoint representation of . This allows one to construct a generalized Wigner function on this phase space, which is again essentially in the same relation with the affine group, as the ordinary Wigner function with the Heisenberg-Weyl group.

Algebraic Solution of the Harmonic Oscillator With Minimal Length Uncertainty Relations

Kay L. Gemba, Zvonimir Hlousek, Zoltán Papp

In quantum mechanics with minimal length uncertainty relations the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator is a deformed SU(1,1) algebra. The eigenvalues and eigenstates are constructed algebraically and they form the infinite-dimensional representation of the deformed SU(1,1) algebra. Our construction is independent of prior knowledge of the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation of the model. The approach can be generalized to the $D$-dimensional oscillator with non-commuting coordinates.

Coherent states on the circle

José A González, M. A. del Olmo

A careful study of the physical properties of a family of coherent states on the circle, introduced some years ago by de Bièvre and González (in 1992 Semiclassical behaviour of the Weyl correspondence on the circle Group Theoretical Methods in Physics vol I (Madrid: Ciemat)), is carried out. They were obtained from the Weyl-Heisenberg coherent states in by means of the Weil-Brezin-Zak transformation, they are labelled by the points of the cylinder , and they provide a realization of by entire functions (similar to the well known Fock-Bargmann construction). In particular, we compute the expectation values of the position and momentum operators on the circle and we discuss the Heisenberg uncertainty relation.

The Canonical Coherent States Associated With Quotients of the Ane Weyl-Heisenberg Group

Stephan Dahlke, Dirk A. Lorenz, Peter Maaß +2 more

This paper is concerned with the uncertainty principle in the context of the ane-W eyl-Heisenberg group in one and two dimensions. As the representation of this group fails to be square integrable, we explore various admissible sections of this group, and calculate the resulting uncertainty principles as well as its minimizers with respect to these sections. Previous studies have shown that these sections give rise to mixed smoothness spaces. We demonstrate that the minimizers obtained for these sections actually interpolate between Gabor and wavelets functions.

Coupled supersymmetry and ladder structures beyond the harmonic oscillator

Cameron L. Williams, Nikhil N. Pandya, Bernhard G. Bodmann +1 more

The development of supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanics has shown that some of the insights based on the algebraic properties of ladder operators related to the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator (QMHO) carry over to the study of more general systems. At this level of generality, pairs of eigenfunctions of so-called partner Hamiltonians are transformed into each other, but the entire spectrum of any one of them cannot be deduced from this intertwining relationship in general – except in special cases. In this paper, we present a more general structure that provides all eigenvalues for a class of Hamiltonians that do not factor into a pair of operators satisfying canonical commutation relations. Instead of a pair of partner Hamiltonians, we consider two pairs that differ by an overall shift in their spectrum. This is called coupled supersymmetry. In that case, we also develop coherent states and present some uncertainty principles which generalise the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Coupled SUSY is explicitly realised by an infinite family of differential operators which admit orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions of generalised harmonic oscillators.

Uncertainty relations for a non-canonical phase-space noncommutative algebra

Nuno C Dias, João Nuno Prata

Abstract We consider a non-canonical phase-space deformation of the Heisenberg–Weyl algebra that was recently introduced in the context of quantum cosmology. We prove the existence of minimal uncertainties for all pairs of non-commuting variables. We also show that the states which minimize each uncertainty inequality are ground states of certain positive operators. The algebra is shown to be stable and to violate the usual Heisenberg–Pauli–Weyl inequality for position and momentum. The techniques used are potentially interesting in the context of time-frequency analysis.
