On Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle and the CCR

Abstract

Abstract Realizing the canonical commutation relations (CCR) [N, Θ] = - i as N = - i d/dϑ and Θ to be the multiplication by ϑ on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on [0, 2π], in the physical literature there seems to be some contradictions concerning the Heisenberg uncertainty principle ⟨ΔN⟨ ⟨ΔΘ⟨ ≥ 1/4. The difficulties may be overcome by a rigorous mathematical analysis of the domain of state vectors, for which Heisenberg's inequality is valid. It is shown that the exponentials exp {i t N} and exp{i sΘ} satisfy some commutation relations, which are not the Weyl relations. Finally, the present work aims at a better understanding of the phase and number operators in non-Fock representations.

Canonically Conjugate Pairs, Uncertainty Relations, and Phase Operators

J. C. Garrison, Jack Wong

Apparent difficulties that prevent the definition of canonical conjugates for certain observables, e.g., the number operator, are eliminated by distinguishing between the Heisenberg and Weyl forms of the canonical commutation relations (CCR's). Examples are given for which the uncertainty principle does not follow from the CCR's. An operator F is constructed which is canonically conjugate, in the Heisenberg sense, to the number operator; and F is used to define a quantum time operator.

A generalization of the canonical commutation relation and Heisenberg uncertainty principle for the orbital operators

Duglas Ugulava, David Zarnadze

Abstract In this paper, the orbits of observable physical quantities of position and momentum operators at the states of quantum Hilbert spaces are created. Also the Hilbert space of finite orbits and the Fréchet–Hilbert space of all orbits are created and the orbital operators corresponding to these observable operators in these spaces of orbits are defined and studied. We call this process the orbitization, and the obtained model the orbital quantum mechanics. The orbitization process is compared with the quantization process. The generalization of well-known canonical commutation relations for orbital operators corresponding to the position and momentum operators is established. Also, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle for the orbital operators is proved and the question of achieving equality in the Heisenberg inequality is considered.

Uncertainty relations for a non-canonical phase-space noncommutative algebra

Nuno C Dias, João Nuno Prata

Abstract We consider a non-canonical phase-space deformation of the Heisenberg–Weyl algebra that was recently introduced in the context of quantum cosmology. We prove the existence of minimal uncertainties for all pairs of non-commuting variables. We also show that the states which minimize each uncertainty inequality are ground states of certain positive operators. The algebra is shown to be stable and to violate the usual Heisenberg–Pauli–Weyl inequality for position and momentum. The techniques used are potentially interesting in the context of time-frequency analysis.

Angular-momentum—angle commutation relations and minimum-uncertainty states

K. Yamada

We extend the canonical commutation relations (CCR) in quantum mechanics to the case where appropriate dynamical variables are angular momenta and angles. It is found that projection operators of the resultant Weyl algebra provide us with a new and powerful way of characterizing minimum-uncertainty states, including those obtained by Carruthers and Nieto. The uniqueness theorem of the Schr\"odinger representation remains valid for extended CCR in a simple case. Finally, a wide range of applicability of our method is suggested.

Hilbert Space Representations of Generalized Canonical Commutation Relations

Asao Arai

We consider Hilbert space representations of a generalization of canonical commutation relations , where 's are the elements of an algebra with identity , is the imaginary unit, and is a real number with antisymmetry . Some basic aspects on Hilbert space representations of the generalized CCR (GCCR) are discussed. We define a Schrödinger-type representation of the GCCR by an analogy with the usual Schrödinger representation of the CCR with degrees of freedom. Also, we introduce a Weyl-type representation of the GCCR. The main result of the present paper is a uniqueness theorem on Weyl representations of the GCCR.
