The critical region thermodynamics of some statistical models

Abstract

We consider the exactly solvable Ashkin-Teller model and the hard square \nmodel, in which both scaling law hypothesis and the universality one are \nviolated. The critical properties of these models have been investigated. \nThe reasons for the violation of the scaling law and universality hypotheses \nare clarified.

Universality and non-universality in the Ashkin-Teller model

Alessandro Giuliani

The Ashkin-Teller model can be formulated as a pair of 2D Ising models, interacting via a four-spin interaction. I consider the case of weak anisotropy (slight a-symmetry between the two Ising layers) and weak coupling. I show that the system admits two critical temperatures whose difference varies continuously with the strength of the coupling, scaling with an anomalous exponent as one let the a-symmetry parameter go to zero. The specific heat diverges logarithmically at the critical points (as for Ising) but the constant in front of the logarithm is renormalized by an anomalous critical exponent. The logarithmic divergence of the specific heat dominates only in an exponentially small interval around the critical temperatures and outside it is modified into an anomalous power law behaviour. The proof is based on an exact mapping of Ashkin-Teller into a model of (1+1)D interacting fermions and on the implementation of constructive Renormalization group methods on the fermionic system. This PhD thesis includes: (1) a review of the exact solution of 2D Ising in terms of Grassmann functional integrals; (2) a review of the Grassmann representation for a class of interacting Ising models, including Ashkin-Teller and the 8 vertex model; (3) a detailed discussion of the multiscale analysis of the Ashkin-Teller model, based on fermionic Renormalization Group methods, including the study of the flow of the effective coupling constants (in particular a proof of vanishing of the beta function for this and similar Luttinger-like models, based on modified approximate Ward identities, is included). This thesis is based on joint work with V. Mastropietro.

Universal Relations for Nonsolvable Statistical Models

G. Benfatto, Pierluigi Falco, Vieri Mastropietro

We present the first rigorous derivation of a number of universal relations for a class of models with continuously varying indices (among which are interacting planar Ising models, quantum spin chains and 1D Fermi systems), for which an exact solution is not known, except in a few special cases. Most of these formulas were conjectured by Luther and Peschel, Kadanoff, and Haldane, but only checked in the special solvable models; one of them, related to the anisotropic Ashkin-Teller model, is novel.

Critical exponents of the Ashkin-Teller model

J. R. Drugowich de Felício, R. Köberle

We show that the time-continuous Hamiltonian of the two-dimensional Ashkin-Teller model is that of a massive Thirring model. This implies the existence of an infinite number of conservation laws in the critical region and enables us to determine the critical exponents of the energy, crossover, and polarization operators.

Ising-like behaviour of the Ashkin-Teller model

J. R. Drugowich de Felício, R. Köberle, L. Nunes de Oliveira

We show that the Ashkin-Teller model has Ising critical exponents, in the region where the model has two phase transitions. The proof follows from mapping the ground state of the time-continuous Ashkin-Teller Hamiltonian onto that of the Ising chain in a transverse field.

Universality for the critical lines of the eight-vertex, Ashkin-Teller, and Gaussian models

Adrianus M. M. Pruisken, A. C. Brown

A perturbation expansion has been performed for the critical lines of the eight-vertex and Ashkin-Teller models around the decoupling point. The critical temperature and the details of the mapping of these lines onto the Gaussian-model critical line is calculated to second order in the marginal parameters. We find agreement with the exactly known results for these models and with the mapping formalism of Kadanoff and Brown.

Two phase transitions in the Ashkin-Teller model

Fa Yueh Wu, Ken‐Yu Lin

Assuming a continuous dependence of the criticality on the energy parameters, it is conjectured that the Ashkin-Teller model has in general two phase transitions. The two critical points coalesce into a single one when the two middle energies in the model are degenerate.
