Abstract

We present comparative noise figure measurements on neodymium and ytterbium doped double-clad fiber amplifiers. While the neodymium doped amplifier showed the quantum-limited noise figure of 3 dB, the ytterbium doped amplifier exhibited excess noise due to its three-level system. We compared optical and electrical methods with respect to the accuracy and the suitability for high power measurements.

Noise and quantum conversion efficiency(QCE) of ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier are researched theoretically in this paper. From the rate and propagation equations describing ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier system, the noise and QCE are calculated, and the effect of pump power, Yb doped concentration, and device length on noise and QCE is also discussed with 975nm pump wavelength.

Noise-figure limit of fiber-optical parametric amplifiers and wavelength converters: experimental investigation

Renyong Tang, Paul L. Voss, Jacob Lasri +2 more

Recent theoretical work predicts that the quantum-limited noise figure of a x(3)-based fiber-optical parametric amplifier operating as a phase-insensitive in-line amplifier or as a wavelength converter exceeds the standard 3-dB limit at high gain. The degradation of the noise figure is caused by the excess noise added by the unavoidable Raman gain and loss occurring at the signal and the converted wavelengths. We present detailed experimental evidence in support of this theory through measurements of the gain and noise-figure spectra for phase-insensitive parametric amplification and wavelength conversion in a continuous-wave amplifier made from 4.4 km of dispersion-shifted fiber. The theory is also extended to include the effect of distributed linear loss on the noise figure of such a long-length parametric amplifier and wavelength converter.

By cascading two non-degenerate inline fiber-optic parametric amplifiers, we observe NF ~2dB (beating phase-insensitive quantum limit) at 16-dB gain for the second (phase-sensitive) stage after subtracting the excess noise from the first (phase-insensitive) stage.

Investigation of the parameters of a fiber optical quantum image amplifier

V L Koval'chuk, V P Konarev, V N Lomakin +1 more

An experimental investigation was made of the resolution of a neodymium-activated glass fiber laser image amplifier and of the dependence of the signal/noise ratio at the amplifier output on the signal power at the input. The resolution in the active regime (in the presence of pumping) was not inferior to that in the passive regime (without pumping) and the signal/noise ratio (and, consequently, the contrast of the amplified image) improved, compared with the passive regime.

Study on Theory Model of Double Cladding Erbium-YtterbiumCo-doped Fiber Amplifiers

Jumei Zhang

Aimed at the existed questions of last theory model of double cladding erbium-ytterbium co-doped fiber amplifier, a new one is proposed based on the consideration that the population profile of the different energy level is dependent of the signal optical intensity in the fiber core cross section. With the theory model, we numerically analyzed the uppre state population distribution of the erbium and ytterbium, the result shows its rationality.

Noise Figure Study for a 3-Stage Hybrid Amplifier Using Parametric Wavelength Converters and EDFA

Cheng Guo, Afshin Shamsshooli, Youichi Akasaka +2 more

We explore the potential of a combination of two fiber parametric wavelength converters and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier to serve as a hybrid amplifier for S-band. We experimentally confirm the validity of a simple quantum model of the wavelength-converter noise figure (NF) and use it to extrapolate the measurement results and find the optimum hybrid amplifier settings. We find that the total NF can be below 6 dB, if the wavelength conversion efficiency of the first stage is above 4 dB. Furthermore, the total NF can be as low as 4 dB, if the conversion efficiency of the first stage is 10 dB or higher. Finally, we estimate the potential impact of pump relative noise on the NF.
