Abstract

Here, we propose a new method of identifying the unknown hyperfine transitions without a wavemeter, by the electromagnetically induced transparency. EIT is a phenomenon of quantum interference between two propagating electromagnetic radiations.

Determining hyperfine transitions with electromagnetically induced transparency and optical pumping

Yi-Chi Lee, Chin‐Chun Tsai, Yung-Yung Chang +2 more

A system is designed to observe the phenomena of electromagnetically induced transparency and optical pumping in cesium D 1 and D 2 lines at room temperature. When a pump laser is frequency-locked on the top of a hyperfine transition and the frequency of the probe laser scans over another hyperfine transition, a spectrum of V-type electromagnetically induced transparency or an optical pumping can be observed depending on whether the two lasers share a common ground state. Therefore, these results can be used to identify the unknown hyperfine transitions of the D 1 line transitions. For educational purposes, this system is helpful for understanding the electromagnetically induced transparency and the optical pumping.

Phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency

Eugeny Korsunsky, Norbert Leinfellner, Arno Huss +2 more

We report on the experimental demonstration of phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). This effect is based on a quantum interference in closed-loop schemes of interaction of atoms with the radiation. It allows us to control optical properties of the medium by the phases of the laser fields. We discuss some of the possible applications of phase-dependent EIT.

Resolution of hyperfine transitions in metastable Kr83 using electromagnetically induced transparency

Y. B. Kale, Satya Ram Mishra, Vibhuti Bhushan Tiwari +2 more

Narrow linewidth signals of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the metastable $^{83}\mathrm{Kr}$ have been observed. Various hyperfine transitions in the $4{p}^{5}5s{[3/2]}_{2}$ to $4{p}^{5}5p{[5/2]}_{3}$ manifolds of $^{83}\mathrm{Kr}$ have been identified through the experimentally observed EIT signals. Some unresolved or poorly resolved hyperfine transitions in saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) are clearly resolved in the present work. Using the spectral separation of these EIT identified hyperfine transitions, the magnetic hyperfine constant $(A)$ and the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant $(B)$ are determined with improved accuracy for $4{p}^{5}5s{[3/2]}_{2}$ and $4{p}^{5}5p{[5/2]}_{3}$ manifolds.

Nonlinear optics using electromagnetically induced transparency

Stephen E. Harris, G. Y. Yin

It is now well understood that the characteristics of a nonlinear optical process are the result of the interplay of the linear and nonlinear susceptibilities. In general, as an atomic transition to the ground state is approached, the nonlinear susceptibility is resonantly enhanced, but, at the same time, the media exhibits a rapidly increasing refractive index and becomes opaque. During the last several years we have shown how electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) may be used to dramatically solve this problem.

Narrow linewidth signals of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the metastable 83Kr^{83}\mathrm{Kr}83Kr have been observed. Various hyperfine transitions in the 4p55s[3/2]24{p}^{5}5s{[3/2]}_{2}4p55s[3/2]2 to 4p55p[5/2]34{p}^{5}5p{[5/2]}_{3}4p55p[5/2]3 manifolds of 83Kr^{83}\mathrm{Kr}83Kr have been identified through the experimentally observed EIT signals. Some unresolved or poorly resolved hyperfine transitions in saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) are clearly resolved in the present work. Using the spectral separation of these EIT identified hyperfine transitions, the magnetic hyperfine constant (A)(A)(A) and the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant (B)(B)(B) are determined with improved accuracy for 4p55s[3/2]24{p}^{5}5s{[3/2]}_{2}4p55s[3/2]2 and 4p55p[5/2]34{p}^{5}5p{[5/2]}_{3}4p55p[5/2]3 manifolds.
