Abstract

We theoretically investigate dressed-four-wave mixing (dressed-FWM) spectroscopy of rubidium atoms in a micrometric thin vapour. It is found that Dike-narrowing type Autler–Townes (AT) spectroscopy with high resolution can be achieved in a reverse Y-type four-level atomic system due to the phase-conjugated configuration of laser beams and the transient effects of atom–wall collision in the thin vapour. We also show that controllable suppression and enhancement of the dressed-FWM signal due to the evolution of atomic coherence can be obtained by selecting different coupling field intensities at the proper detuning of the probe and the coupling fields. This control of FWM processes can be interpreted by dressed state analysis and probably used in the design of optical switch and the enhancement of FWM processes for frequency conversion.

Wavelength dependence four-wave mixing spectroscopy in a micrometric atomic vapour

Yuanyuan Li, Li Li, Zhang Yan-Peng +1 more

This paper presents a theoretical study of wavelength dependence four-wave-mixing (FWM) spectroscopy in a micrometric thin atomic vapour. It compares three cases termed as mismatched case I, matched case and mismatched case II for the probe wavelength less, equal and greater than the pump wavelength respectively. It finds that Dicke-narrowing can overcome width broadening induced by Doppler effects and polarisation interference of thermal atoms, and high resolution FWM spectra can be achieved both in matched and mismatched wavelength for many cases. It also finds that the magnitude of the FWM signal can be dramatically modified to be suppressed or to be enhanced in comparison with that of matched wavelength in mismatched case I or II. The width narrowing and the magnitude suppression or enhancement can be demonstrated by considering enhanced contribution of slow atoms induced by atom-wall collision and transient effect of atom-light interaction in a micrometric thin vapour.

Dressed Four-Wave Mixing Spectroscopy Modified by Polarization Interference and Atom-Wall Collision in Micrometric Thin Cells

Yuanyuan Li, Li-Li Li-Li, Jintao Bai +3 more

Dressed four-wave mixing (DFWM) spectroscopy is investigated theoretically in some micrometric thin cells. It is found that DFWM spectra can be modified by polarization interference of atoms and transient effects induced by atom-wall collision. This modification can lead to width-narrowing of DFWM lines and facilitates to implement experiment of high resolution DFWM spectroscopy in a confined atomic system.

Enhancement and suppression of spatial splitting four-wave mixing in atomic medium

Yuming Zhuang, Suling Sang, Peiying Li +6 more

We experimentally report on the evolution from singly-dressed to doubly-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) process by controlling the powers of the probe, the pump and the dressing fields respectively. The differences in the enhancement and the suppression of FWM signal between the two-level and cascade three-level atomic systems are observed and explained by the multi-dressed effect theoretically. Both the x direction and the y direction spatial splittings of the degenerate-FWM (DWFM) beams are obtained. We also investigate the switch between the enhancement and the suppression of the DWFM signals and between its spatial splittings in x direction and y direction. The spatial splittings in x direction and y direction can be controlled by the relative position and the intensity of the involved laser beams. Such a study can be useful for optimizing the efficiency of the FWM process and providing potential applications in spatial signal processing.

Coherent control of dressing interaction of sequential-doubly-dressed four-wave mixing

Ma Xiaoyu, Sang Suling

Abstract We investigate the coherent control of dressing interaction in four-wave mixing (FWM) in a Y-type four-level atomic system based on the dressed states theory. We study the density matrix equation acted by two dressing fields simultaneously governing FWM signal intensity and the eigenvalues under the dressed state formalism. It is shown that the peak position and intensity of Autler–Townes splitting both originate from the dressing interaction as the detuning of the probe field is scanned. Moreover, it is observed that the interaction could be controlled by the dressing fields. Such flexibly controlled nonlinear signal has potential applications in optical communication and quantum information processing.

Repeatedly dressed four-wave mixing in N5B five-level atomic system

Yang Yong-ming, XU Qi-ming, Zhang Yan-Peng +1 more

We present a theoretical treatment for the repeatedly dressed FWM processes in N5B five-level atomic system. Based on our previous work, the evolution of Autler-Townes splitting in a multi-dressed FWM spectrum is expounded using the characteristic method of Independence effect. Under condition that the coupling and probe fields which induced the FWM are strong, we further demonstrate the suppression and enhancement of FWM signal intensity. The results indicate that one cpupling field can dresse the atom twice and produce the donbly dressed state and triply dressed states. Many applications of multi-dressed FWM spectrum can benefit from the investigation on the atomic energy level and the nonlinear processes of mutiwave mixing(MWM).

Dicke-Narrowing Spectroscopy of Doubly Dressed Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Singly Dressed Four-Wave-Mixing in a Confined Atomic System

Yuanyuan Li, Jintao Bai, Li-Li Li-Li +5 more

Dicke-narrowing effect appears both in doubly dressed electromagnetically induced transparency and singly dressed four-wave-mixing lines due to the contribution of slow atoms resulting from de-excited effects of atom-wall collision and transient behaviour of atoms in a confined system. A robust recipe for high resolution spectroscopy of electromagnetically induced transparency dressed by two fields and four-wave-mixing lines comparable with the cold atoms is achievable in a thin vapour cell in experiments.
