Spectral-hole burning in erbium-doped silica and fluoride fibers

Abstract

Room-temperature (RT) spectral-hole burning (SHB) in erbium-doped silica and fluoride fibers is investigated and compared. SHB in a fluoride fiber is less strong than in a silica fiber and the hole widths are much wider indicating less inhomogeneity.

Room temperature spectral hole-burning in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

Summary form only given. In this paper we report the first room temperature measurements of spectral hole-burning depths and widths of an Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). The alumino-germano-silicate EDFA was pumped at 1480 nm and had a small signal gain of 25 dB at 1551 nm. Spectral gain measurements were carried out in the range 1535-1570 nm using a lock-in technique and spectral subtraction for accurate determination of SHB properties.

Spectral hole burningin silica-based and in fluoride-based optical fibre amplifiers

I. Joindot, F. Dupré

The results of spectral hole burning measurements in silica-based and in fluoride-based erbium-doped optical fibre amplifiers are compared. In silica-based fibre, the spectral hole appears clearly, while in fluoride-based fibre, the shape is different and weaker effects occur around the saturating wavelength.

Spectral hole burning in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers

Maxim A. Bolshtyansky

A new theoretical/numerical model of the spectral hole burning (SHB) effect in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is suggested. A new measurement technique for SHB measurement is developed. Experiments are conducted to identify the particular mechanism of SHB. A computer simulation program is developed using this approach. The shape and depth of the spectral hole are in accordance with the suggested theory.

Experimental evidence of coherent population oscillations based on spectral hole-burning in erbium-doped silica fibre

Sebastián Jarabo

\n\nSpectral hole-burning in an erbium-doped silica fibre at room temperature has been experimentally demonstrated. This demonstration can be considered as a clear experimental evidence of the relationship between slow light and coherent population oscillations in erbium-doped fibres. In a 3.5 m erbium-doped silica fibre, spectral holes with a depth up to $1.5\\ \\text{m}^{-1}$ were obtained by coupling a strong and narrow saturating power and measuring changes in the spectral absorption coefficient for a weak and wide probe power. A tuneable ring-cavity erbium-doped fibre laser was employed as saturating source. To obtain a higher saturating power, laser emission was amplified by means of a second fibre amplifier.\n

Observation of Replica Holes in Erbium Doped Silica Fiber

Thiago P. Mayer Alegre, Gustavo S. Wiederhecker, Hugo L. Fragnito

Abstract We observed for the first time to our knowledge the presence of replica holes in the fluorescencespectrum of EDFA. Saturating the Er 3+ transition at a single wavelength we noticed theappearance of spectral holes in the ASE other than the usual one around the saturating laser. Wequalitatively explain the effect and confront the experimental results with the homogeneouslybroadened model. Introduction One of the limiting factors to state-of-the-art DWDM systems is the effect of Spectral Hole Burning (SHB) inErbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs). It has been already observed that the presence of a saturating signal ina given wavelength induces a hole around the signal in the gain and Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE)spectra [1],[2]. These holes in EDFAs are typically between 2 and 8 nm width, which is enough to degrade theneighboring channels. The SHB effect is due to the inhomogeneous broadening of the Er 3+ transitions, causedby site-to-site variations of the local electric field in the silica based host, which induces different ions laser linesproperties. This work shows the existence of spectral holes burned at wavelengths far from the saturating laserline, called Spectral Replica Holes (SRHs).
